The sound of distant thunder was the first thing that she heard when the world came back into focus. Slowly, her dark brown eyes opened, taking in the slate grey sky above her head. Rain was starting to fall, speckling her skin and running over her cheeks in cool rivulets.
What had just happened? Julyssa, Princess of Dormir, thought back on the evening that she’d had. It had been quiet, time spent in the library with her husband, the Crowned Prince Thomal. They had been married a year, incredibly happy together, and expecting their first child at the end of summer. The news was so new that her belly hadn’t even begun to swell.
Dormir had been at war for much of their marriage, but Thomal had promised that things would get better. He was an optimist, a peacekeeper, so much different from his father, the King of Dormir. He had made that promise yet again that evening as they sat before the fireplace of the library, talking about the future.
“I promise, Lyssa, that by the time our child is born, we will have peace.” He whispered against her ear, making her smile as he nuzzled against her pale cheek. “We just need time…”
His handsome brown eyes were sparkling as he pressed his hand to her lower belly, stroking the home where his child grew. She hoped that their baby looked like him with clear, strong features and golden blonde hair. She was just admiring her husband when the explosion had occurred…
Explosion! Julyssa sat up with a gasp, her dark eyes surveying the courtyard where a beautiful palace garden had once been. The library had been blown to pieces and the stacks of books that had once resided within now lay scattered in burning rubble. Pushing her tangled brown hair from her features, she noticed that her green dress was ripped and stained, singed from the intense heat.
Her hand instantly flew to her belly, rubbing along tiny bump as she shakily pushed herself to her feet. It was eerily quiet, the silence punctuated with rolling thunder as she carefully made her way towards the rubble.
“Thomal?” She called out in a trembling voice. “Thomal?!”
Her voice was laced with frantic energy, tears already gathering in her eyes as she peered around the burning rubble. Her handsome prince was nowhere to be seen. Was he dead? Injured? She didn’t know but before she could begin her search, she heard the lone cry of a bird of prey high above her head.
Glancing towards the sky, she saw a falcon lazily flying. It gave another shriek and she slowly took a step back. Thomal has always warned her that if she saw a falcon, she needed to run and not stop until she was safe. With no guards in sight, no protect, Julyssa heeded her husband’s words and ran through the courtyard, squeezing through a door that lead into the base of a guard tower. There, she would hide until someone came for her. She prayed that the enemy didn’t find her first…
