Y'know... I wasn't a bit racist at all until I started having to deal with wave after wave of the stereotypical black man/woman on a daily basis. Now? Now, I carry a few prejudices.

Horrible thing. I don't let it affect my personal or professional life, but I know its there. Its like knowing you hate strawberries, but at work you never say anything bad about them and take them when offered and smile.

That's life.

Having worked in the restaurant industry for a while (first in my twenties, and now), I used to follow the stereotypes of certain races/ethnicities. For instance, black people were bad tippers, Mexicans were bad tippers, Asians were bad tippers. Jews always tipped well.

For a while, if my guests were black, mexican, or Asian, I'd roll my eyes and think, "great. No tip on this table."

What a load of crap.

Now that I'm back at it, and I've gained some experience, maturity, and perspective, I've come to realize that it's my service that effects my tip more than anything else, and cheap people are cheap regardless of where they come from. I've gotten 25% from blacks and 10% from whites. The only stereotype that holds up is that Jews have alwayd tipped me well.

Mine involves a weird trend...

Part of my job is to locate vehicles. Sometimes that means crazy stuff I can only find overseas and only one of them was ever made in that color/type/trim/etc. Often, its casual and normal stuff.

Easily half my customers are black, half are white. I've had maybe one Hispanic fellow.

The vast majority of my black customers don't understand that the reason they can't buy such-and-such new car or the reason I won't locate one is because they cannot finance it. Their credit--with the exception of two black clients I've had--is terrible.

White customers? I've had one that couldn't get financed. The rest have acceptable for excellent credit. Many of them, maybe, haven't bought anything from me or I wasn't able to find the Miata or whatever they wanted... but they weren't getting pissed off at me for their wanting a $50k vehicle and not understanding that when you make $1k a month, I can't get you into that vehicle for $300/month.

Math doesn't work that way.

It makes me SO want to avoid some of the customer demographics.

I don't. But I want to.

I oppose abortion.

I oppose torture.

I support gay rights.

Pretty much all of the main parties shun me.

Except the Democrats... aren't they main enough? Then again, location probably matters, too... you'd be unpopular in Mississippi.

No, they object to my stance on abortion. It's a non-negotiable plank of their platform.

True.

I actually don't mind abortion, disinterested in gay-rights as an isuse, and against torture... makes me a bad Republican.

You have my utmost sympathy my dear equine friend :rose:
However can you manage without being pidgeon-holed into either the left or right?
What would happen if everyone thought the way you did?
If they couldn't be so easily classified into either this or that?
What a terrible thought...

All my opinions are wildly popular and universally accaimed by eveeryone on this web site. That's why I always have so little to say in the political threads.

And so briefly, when you do chime in, too.

I believe abortion is the taking of a life. And I still support a woman's right to do it.

I support euthanasia.

But I'm against capital punishment.

I think we should legalize all street drugs. And prostitution.

And I fully support the 2nd amendment.

I don't believe the government should censor anyone.

I believe there should be no sex laws in any state (between consenting adults)

And the age of consent should be lowered to age sixteen in every state.

I support euthanasia. As do I

But I'm against capital punishment. I'm not.

I think we should legalize all street drugs. And prostitution. Prostitution, yes. As far as street drugs, I'm in favor of marijuana (though I can't stand it)

And I fully support the 2nd amendment. ditto

I don't believe the government should censor anyone. Amen

I believe there should be no sex laws in any state (between consenting adults) Hallelujah!

And the age of consent should be lowered to age sixteen in every state. Hmm . . . have to think about this one.

I would totally support a move to legalize prostitution and marijuana (and any other purely herbal intoxicants).

now selena, i'm with you. if you're ever starting a political party....

it's not just 'age of consent,' the new 'juvenile' should be 10-15. after your 15th birthday, you're treated as an adult in every way; you're neither 'protected', nor infantilized.

oh, and every "kid" (young person) should by age 20, leave home and live at least 500 miles away for a couple years.

----
small point: the second amendment is a relic; a peg for parnoia. contrary to the right wing, who are working for a fascist state, arming yourself does NOT prevent the government from becoming a tyrrany. esp. if you're busy voting for and supporting that government for its 'public safety' measures and 'national security' concerns.

it will be around for a long time, like the King James Bible; a foil for a number of right wing causes.

I'm with you on all that except that I'm ambivalent about capital punishment and I don't think abortion is homicide early in pregnancy. I like Pure's notion about emancipating the kids when they're 16, and I think I would remove all age restrictions on booze, too.

Hey... who knew all my "controversial" opinions were so popular!? LOL

I fully agree with Pure and the emancipation of kids at 16... not infantilizing them anymore... As for removing alcohol restrictions, yep, that, too...

Okay, let's go start a Literotica state, shall we? Who has an island? :)

p.s. I'm only against capital punishment because you could be killing someone who is actually innocent... I'm not against it in principal.

If we had the benefit of an older, and more mature society, such as that which most European nations have, I would be in favor of lowering the age of consent and removing the drinking age restriction altogether. But I doubt the US could do either right now without suffering some very serious social and political problems.

I'm in. And Pure can have our guns when he pries our cold, dead fingers - oh, never mind.

PS. Nice butt! :)

Yeah, there might be an outbreak of binge drinking on college campuses.

(Sorry - I couldn't resist. Seriously, I think any problems generated in the transition would diminish much more quickly than you imagine, and the result would actually be far less abuse and tragedy.)

I hate/loathe entirely the song 'Hotel California'.
It makes me want to slit my wrists and drip the blood in my eyes.

I'm against abortion.

I'm on the fence about capital punishment.

I believe that drugs should always be illegal, and that upping the punishment wouldn't hurt anyone either.
*~I think it's a load of shit that addicts can check themselves out of rehab. When you're in the hospital because your sick, the doctor won't release you until you're able. The same should apply.
*~I also think that it's a load of crap that insurance will cover 30 days for an alcoholic, but only 3 for a drug addict.

I think gay marriage should be allowed everywhere.

I think stupid people shouldn't be allowed to breed. :D

Oh, and I think Pres. Bush needs surgery to put his eyes farther apart. I can't stand looking at the idiot's face. :cathappy:

About the tips thing~(I'm a hairstylist, not in the food biz anymore.. but they don't tip at McD's anyway, lol.) I've never noticed color affecting the tip. However, I have noticed that people that are more 'well-to-do', therefore, more able to tip- don't. Or they leave a measly one. However, the people who seem 'poor' almost always do, even if it's a dollar. And in the end, that means much more. Of course, it isn't always like that, but ya know. :)

Not right now, it wouldn't. I honestly don't think Americans are mature enough to accept such a sudden change. Binge drinking on college campuses? How about high school freshman showing up for class with a hangover? And not just the typical few, but by the dozens?

No. The US couldn't handle it. A couple more generations, sure. But not now.

I lived in Franco's Spain for a few years. I liked it alot.

The people had freedom to do all kinds of shit you'd never get away with in America, even now. Franco didnt care who you fucked. Living was cheap. Everyone had a house. Everyone ate. Everyone had medical care. And no one even thought of molesting a woman alone on the street at night.

They'd kill you if you were a criminal. The La Guardia Civil roamed about with machine guns, and they didnt hesitate to use them.

Fascism works well.

When I become emperor of America I'm gonna try it here.

They might find maggots uncommonly good companions.

As for politicians ... the last time our states voting districts were redrawn, it was clear what they thought of the concept. Oh, they all whined and yammered about which party had been treated most cruelly, but the real numbers to look at were the districts that traditionally had voted split tickets. 90% of them vanished.
