:nana: I know this has been done before but it's always interesting to do again once in awhile!

What is unique about where you live?

Here in Michigan we have Petoskey Stones. The only place in the world that they can be found!

Petoskey stone is a fossilized coral, the state stone of Michigan and is commonly found along the shores of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron in the United States.

It was formed by the fossilization of ancient coral, hexagonaria. These corals lived in warm shallow seas that covered Michigan during Devonian time, some 350 million years ago.

During Devonian time, Michigan was quite different. Geographically, what is now Michigan was near the equator. The area covered by a warm shallow sea which was an ideal habitat for marine life.

The name Petoskey is a derivation of the name Petosegay, the name given to the son of a Frenchman who married an Ottwa Indian princess and later became the tribes' chief . The translation means "rising sun" or "rays of dawn".

These are the lesser known things about NY

Things That Make You Go... "Huh?"
So, you think you have Long Island all figured out. It's a sedate suburb of New York City with quiet streets lined with rows of houses each with a lush green lawn. We have our shopping malls and beautiful beaches. Nothing weird going on here, right? Wrong! Here are some weird and wacky sites you may come across as you travel around the Island.
The Big Duck
Duck farmer Martin Maurer wanted a unique location from which to sell his Peking ducks. In 1931 he built a giant duck which now "lives" in Flanders at the entrance to Sears Bellows County Park. Water fowl isn't among the products sold there. Instead you can buy Long Island memorabilia and get East End tourist information.

Amityville Horror
In 1974 Ronald DeFeo murdered six members of his family in the home he shared with them at 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville.
There are many who claim the home is haunted including the Lutz family. They moved into the house in 1975 and fled shortly after. Today another family lives in the home.
J. Seward Johnson's Sculptures at Hofstra University: The Hitchhiker and Creating
Is that man leaning up against a tree on Hofstra's campus sitting oddly still? What about that hitchhiker yearning to go to Boston? Why hasn't he gotten a ride in all these years? Creating and the Hitchhiker are two lifelike sculptures by J. Seward Johnson, Jr. that have resided at Hofstra University since the mid-1980s.

The Smithtown Bull
As you drive through the busy intersection of Jericho Turnpike and Route 25A in Smithtown, don't be startled when you see a 14 foot tall bull sitting atop a pedestal. This bronze statue pays homage to the founder of Smithtown, Richard Smith, and his probably fictitious bull Whisper. Oh, and if you notice the bull's private parts have been painted, that's just a prank pulled by some Long Island students. It happens occasionally. :D

Thanks DLL...I love learning new things about places I may visit someday. I like looking for the oddball things. LOL

We have the Mackinac Bridge which connects the lower peninsula to the Upper Peninsula. One day a year,on Labor Day, the bridge is open to foot traffic The Annual bridge walk brings thousands of people from all over the world.

We have a river channel that runs directly through our Historic District. There are two drawbridges that allow everything from sailboats to Great Lakes freighters to pass through

Our Fire Station is the oldest in the State that has been in continual use since its opening in 1888

At one time, this city had more millionaires per capita than any other in the US, most being lumber barons

There are only 5 stoplights in the city, and no left turn signals

During our Victorian Christmas Parade, a three story tall tree is pulled through downtown area on a log sled hitched to draft horses that often exceed 2,500 lbs a piece
