In order to accept the offers, which have come from Belgian, Dutch, and Norwegian firms that claim to possess some of the world’s most advanced oil skimming ships, Obama would need to waive the Merchant Marine Act of 1920 (P.L. 66-261). Also known as the Jones Act, the law requires essentially that all commercial acts conducted in U.S.-controlled waters be performed by “U.S.-flag ships, constructed in the United States, owned by U.S. citizens, and crewed by U.S. citizens and U.S. permanent residents.”

Union labor organizations influenced the White House to reject foreign ships and crews because they would not employ Unionized workers.

Environmentalists are opposing dispersants, burning the oil and building sand berms to prevent the oil from reaching beaches…IN ORDER TO PROTECT THE ENVIRONMENT?

One can be tempted to refer to Obama's Chief of Staff Rahm Emmanuel, ‘never let a good crisis to to waste…’, and interpret this as a means to hamstring oil exploration and extraction to improve chances for more funding for ‘alternative’ sources of energy.

Obeyme can't afford to lose his base, ami, even at the expense of the Gulf and the adjoining states...who didn't vote for him anyway. There's no denying something went wrong at the well...whether by accident or due to negligence has yet to be determined. BP is doing everything it can to deal with the problem; after all they are hemorrhaging money every minute and Washington's carping and threats aren't helping things a bit. Oh wait, they did extort that 20 billion from evil BP that the company had already agreed to put up...now the feds can dole it out to whoever as they see fit. Kinda like your tax dollars.

The useful fools in the media are excoriating the evil oil corporation for it's ruination of the Gulf and giving the bungling, uncoordinated, ineffective response by the feds a pass. This was clearly illustrated by the criticism of BP's honcho for going to a yacht race, yet Obeyme's golf game (with Joe 'Bite Me' Biden and other stooges) was a necessary 'stress reliever' for our overworked Prez. What a pant load.

Now a federal judge has sensibly overturned that fed induced,economically disastrous 6 month work stoppage on all offshore drilling...which the White House is appealing of course. This continued bungling on the part of Obeyme and his acolytes dealing with this disaster is nothing short of criminal.

There was rumor but no hard fact on BP's 20 Billion...no one will state as fact who will disburse the funds and it may well be the Federal Government..if that is the case...then just say goodbye to the money.

The irony of the environmental lobby and their toadies in DC, is that they throw a hissy fit over damaging the Gulf environment to mitigate the current environmental catastrophe....maybe that seems funny only to me...dunno....

The quixotic reaction on the part of the greenies to this oil spill is typical of their contradictory attitudes towards man and nature...they are no longer protecting the environment, they're worshipping it...entire industries must cease operation to protect Mother Earth and her flora and fauna.
