Understanding the Rating System

I am by no means complaining about this, as it was a small boon for a story of mine and a shot in the arm for me, but just how does the rating system work? I have a story that was carrying a rating of 4.48 across 178 votes. Yesterday it dropped by one vote, but gained.02 stars, raising it to a 4.5, adding the HOT designation. One, I was not aware votes could be removed, but is this because the lost vote was a very low one, raising the average? Again, I'm not complaining, as it worked in my favor. Thanks!

This exact subject was discussed a while ago… How does scoring work? You had a ‘1’ vote removed by a sweep.

Don’t get too comfortable. I’ve had sweeps remove a couple of ‘5’ votes across all of my stories. Mostly ‘1’ or ‘2’, but not just those. More details in the linked thread.

Do they sweep votes if there are 10 or more votes from the same IP address?

I believe that I have one reader (a 1-bomber) that I may have struck a nerve with and several people have informed me that he has been outed as having multiple accounts just to troll.

The detail of how sweeps function are not known, except to the site owners, but I would definitely think that sort of thing would be something they deal with.

I suppose sweeps are a writer's friend most of the time as a way to strike back at trolls and 1 bombers. My story lost another vote, raising the rating another .02. A small step, yes, but I'll take it.
