If you want to know how the pill works, google 'how does the pill work?' and you'll get plenty of plain-language explanations.

What a woman gets when she's on hormonal birth control (if it's working) is not a period, it's technically breakthrough bleeding from stopping the hormones for a week (pills either come in 21-day packs, or 28-day packs, where the last week is a sugar pill/placebo). That's why many women have much lighter "periods" or just a little bit of bleeding on the pill.

Depo provera (the shot) is like the pill, but a much higher dose of hormones and can stop a woman's "period" altogether while the hormones are in her system, and even for many months after her last shot.
