Understanding random noises

I live in a beach city, and often find myself relaxing quietly at home, when I hear a slapping sound. Either somebody is running loudly in sandals, or having loud sex. It's more difficult to tell apart than you might think. I'm wondering if anybody has encountered a similar issue with different circumstances.
