Underage Drinking in a Story?

Hi all. I'm well aware and fully abide by Lit's rules on under-18 sexual content. But I'm currently working on a story where a father is helping his 19-year-old daughter prepare for her wedding day, and it includes them having cocktails together. Does anyone know if this violates Lit rules, as well, since she is under 21? Thanks for any info or advice in advance.

I've seen a ton of instances of drinking below 21, if that's what you mean by underage. Can't recall any where the drinker would be below 18 as well.

As long as you stay within this range, which you say you do, it should be fine.

Thanks! I just wanted to figure it out before I even submit the story. Don't want it to be rejected for that one aspect.

Joking aside, you'll be fine. I read loads of stories about people getting stoned (all written well before legalisation) so boozing won't be an issue (I've also read some with underage drinking).

There is no general rule at Lit against writing about illegal conduct. You should be fine unless the underage activity takes on a sexual flavor.

When I saw “underage drinking” in thread title I thought it will be about 12 year olds getting drunk on dad’s secret stash, not about a 19 year old woman. America is a weird country.

You can absolutely have stories which depict illegal acts, provided you follow the rest of the site rules.

Same actually for legal acts. eg in many places it's perfectly legal for two consenting 17-year-olds to have sex (not speaking out against that rule, I'm perfectly in agreeance that Laurel doesn't want to run a site where people wack off to stories about kids fucking, I don't want that either) but it's against site rules so, even it legal, cannot post.

In regards to illegal stuff:

• Works that advocate for readers to engage in any real life (non-fictional) activity that is illegal in the United States.

So can post a story where a 19-year-old adult adult drinks a cocktail in the us
Can post an essay discussing the legal drinking age in the US and why it should/shouldn't be changed.
Cannot post an essay encouraging 19-year-olds to attend a rally of drinking cocktails in the US, which you are running, and explain that on such and such date you'll be there to provide them all with free alcohol and knives to stab anyone who tries to stop them from underage drinking.

I’ve written several stories with overt references to underage drinking. Never had a problem. I write a lot about college kids. Underage drinking is a right of passage in US colleges

Also, in some states people who are under age can drink with their parents.
As others have said, you don't need a work around, but that's it.

You know, I think I had heard about the thing where minors could drink with their parents in some states years ago, but had completely forgotten about it. Thanks for the reminder. Like you said, it's irrelevant to my situation, but I remember how much I enjoyed drinking with my mother after I turned 21. Would have been even more fun if we had started when I was still in college or even high school...

In some parts of the UK, the 5-year-old would have to rip it from the adult's hands. In some parts of the UK, they'd at least try.

I think the only underage drinking prohibited by Lit involves milk from a tit, if it's sexualized with or in the presence of a minor.
