Across the street of the club a man stepped out of a black and red car mustang. He was a very handsome man with short hair as black as midnight, his face was as chiseled as it was rugged and his plain black and silver suit did nothing to hide his muscular body.

But his eyes were the most captivating

They were electric green and sparkled with intensity most men didn’t have. They also spoke about his character, as they seemed to go on for ages and seemed to be filled with some sort of pain. He seemed to have been through enough to last a lifetime.

And it hadn’t been a good one

He looked around for a few seconds before reaching into his pocket and pulling out a cigar. A gold lighter followed it as hee lit it and took a long appreciative drag before turning and going over to his trunk. He opened it and reached into his pocket pulling out a long black wallet, he tossed it into the trunk before a police issued 1911 followed it. He stared at it for a second before shutting the trunk with out a single word and turning the separate lock on it. He turned back towards the club fixing his tie as he took another deep drag of his cigar. He let it drop onto the pavement before stomping it out.

Alexander Cross wouldn’t need it tonight.

He stepped across the street and entered the club. He paid no mind to the bouncers starring at him angrily. He raised an eyebrow at him opening his jacket pocket to show he didn’t have a gun. The man regarded him for a second before nodding and stepping out of the way.

Alex walked in his mind flashing back to the last couple of weeks. He remembered walking into the recruitment centers ready to become a police officer. He remembered some one pulling him aside instead.

Offering him a much different challenge

Three months later his hair was shaved down and he was stepping into his new life as an under cover detective not affiliated with the cops. His handlers told him that while trying to infiltrate a new crime bosses operation every other under cover detective hadn’t made it past the front door. Which was why they recruited him. He had no known ties to the police except for walking in once three months ago. The higher ups didn’t know about him because his handler was the soul person who knew of his existence.

No help No back up

Alexander loved it

He reached the elevator going to the top and stepped inside pushing the button and watching the door close. He was an up and coming enforcer some one trying to become one of the lieutenants. This should have taken him months of climbing up the criminal ladder. Alexander however was inventive. He found out who the boss wanted dead the most on one of the rival clans and killed them making each kill impressive in there own ways. He made sure the police couldn’t track him but the criminal under world would get his unique call sign.

The elevator dinged opening into a spacious loft. The guards were all sitting around watching him as he stepped off of the elevator. He ignored them going over and letting them pat him down and pass a metal detector over him.

Once they made sure he was clean they moved out of the way letting him walk over to the double doors. He knocked and entered standing at a respectable attention.

"You disappoint me, Miguel, I really thought you had potential." Lorraine shook her head, a strand of coffee colored hair fell across her forehead, shielding the poor man from the pity in her chocolate brown eyes. Looking down at the man who knelt in front of her, his head hung low, she felt nothing but disgust. She twirled the pistol in her right hand, watching as the pink and orange light of the sunset caught on the polished silver.

The man looked up, his eyes pleading with her but his lips, wisely, remaining closed. His chin trembled slightly as tears slipped silently down his cheeks. Lorraine was unmoved. She pulled the hammer back and placed the muzzle against his temple, revealing in the sight of his body instantly tensing and the sounds of his heaving sobs.

"Please," he said, his voice barely above a whisper, "please give me another chance."

"You see, Miguel, that's the problem, I don't like to give people a chance to fuck me over again." She pressed the muzzle harder against his temple, her voice ice-cold. "Fool me once, shame on me. Fool me twice and you're dead. So, if I broke my rule for you, I would have to break it for every son-of-a-bitch who thinks he can one up me." She bent down, her lips brushing against his ear, "You don't fuck with me, Miguel. That's rule number one. All this could have been avoided if you had just kept your sticky little hands out of my money."

"Ms. Costas," Trey, one of Lorraine's bodyguards stepped out of the shadows, cell phone in hand, "there's an issue down at the club."

Lorraine stepped back away from the weeping man. "Looks like today's your lucky day." A cold smile pulled at her soft features, "I won't be ending your pathetic life."

Grabbing the cellphone from Trey, Lorraine walked around the old plane hanger and made her way towards her car, a vintage, cherry red mustang. The sound of a single gunshot ringing in the air behind her.

*****

Tucked away in her office, Lorraine watched the security feed as the enforcer made his way into the club. He was new to her organization, making enough of a name for himself that her lieutenants took note of him and brought him to Lorraine's attention. She was in need of a new lieutenant since Miguel had fucked up and this new guy might just be the answer to her problems. If anything, at least he was attractive, something that couldn't be said for many of her men.

He was outside her door now, being frisked by her most trusted men. Then came the knock. Lorraine moved from behind her desk, a giant mahogany number that had graced this office since her father headed the organization. She perched on the front edge of the desk, a move that clearly showed off her lithe frame that was dressed conservatively in a blue sheath dress with a black belt to accentuate her trim waist. Her long, olive-toned legs on display. Her hair lay in loose waves down to her shoulders and her make-up was natural. All in all, her appearance was meant to put men at ease and trick them into letting their guard down around her.

"Come in," she called, her hands rested on the desk behind her, giving her the appearance of perfect calm. As he walked into the room, Lorraine smiled gently and held one perfectly manicured hand out. "Mr. Cross, welcome, I am Lorraine Costas."

Alexander Cross stopped at the door staring at her with wide eyes. He hadn’t expected hell no one did that one of the most feared up and coming new comers would be a girl.

And a beautiful one at that!

Alex cursed his lack on manners and put himself back at ease. His eyes tightened back down and he walked in. He bowed softly and took her hand kissing it.

“Hello Ms. Costas my name is Alexander Cross” he said keeping his head bowed as he released her hand “it is a pleasure to meet you though I did not expect you to be a female” Alexander said speaking honestly.

“Not that there is any thing wrong with that” Alexander said back up and looking at her “Your identity is a closely guarded secret in the under world which is a smart move” He said smiling. His body was at ease his electric green eyes mesmerizing yet calm. Most men were scared in her presence or nervous, but he was respectable yet strong.

Lorraine bit back a sarcastic smile as Alexander Cross bent to kiss her hand. She wasn't fooled by his cool exterior, she knew from the second he had walked through those doors that he was shocked to see her standing there. Everybody was shocked.

“It is a pleasure to meet you though I did not expect you to be a female. Not that there is any thing wrong with that” Alexander said back up and looking at her “Your identity is a closely guarded secret in the under world which is a smart move”

"Yes," Lorraine said, moving to sit, once again, behind her desk, "I find that keeping my identity a secret is one way to get the upper hand in my business dealings." Pushing her chair out from the desk, Lorraine crossed her long legs slowly, seductively, using her feminine charms to unsettle him as best she could. "It's not easy, though," she continued, "many men have been trying to wrest my power away from me and if they ever found out I was a woman, let's just say they wouldn't think twice about trying even harder. Now, where are my manners, please have a seat, Mr. Cross."

Lorraine slowly raked her eyes over Alexander's form as he took the proffered seat.

"Let's talk business, shall we?" She said, leaning forward slightly, once he was settled in. "My left-tenant tells me that you've been doing quite well on the little assignments we give you. Tell me, what made you want to join our humble little organization?"

Alexander smiled watching her long legs move across the desk. His tongue flicked out a little as she did and he cursed himself for getting so distracted. By the time she was settled back into her own seat Alexander was more composed. He caught the ghost of a sarcastic smile on her face and his own lips tightened. He could tell he was trying to unsettle her like his father always said nothing was more dangerous than a women who knew how to use her charm.

“Thank you” He said sitting down. He didn’t know if his own charms would work but he decided to lean in when he sat down with her letting his muscles flex against his white silk shirt. He let his eyes do most of the work letting them cloud over with sparks of electric lust as they discussed business.

“Yes Ma’am” Alexander said respectfully “The jobs you have been giving me have frankly been easy” Alexander said watching her movement. He tried to focus on his mission but decided to let her think he was unsettling her. He would let her think she had the advantage for know.

When she crossed her legs he cleared his throat before continuing “I knew going up the criminal ladder would be slow at that rate so I decided to be a little” Alexander paused looking her up and down “inventive” He finished smirking slightly.

“I know Jimmy the O is one of your biggest rivals on the Armino family” Alexander said leaning back his muscles rolling as he sat back in the chair “So I snuck into his mansion and killed him and his gaurds” Alexander said trying not to boast to much “Some thing your lieutenants told me would be impossible” He said smirking slightly.

"Yes, I'd heard that was you." Lorraine nodded in acknowledgement of his kill. "And I appreciate that greatly."

As she spoke, Lorraine studied Alexander closely. She prided herself on being able to read people, but his body language was sending mixed signals. One moment he seemed to be at ease, the next shifting in his seat nervously. Lorraine was finding it difficult to figure out if he was acting ill at ease or if he really was. She decided to test him.

"Why don't I show you around," she said, standing up and heading towards her office door. "We'll talk more as we walk."

With Alexander following her, Lorraine waved off the two guards that moved to shadow her.

"This," she said, stepping into the club area, which was only half full as the night was still young, "is my pride and joy. When my father was in charge, the Gilded Lily was just a modest little front for drug trafficking and money laundering. But after my father passed, God rest his soul, I decided to move business to a grander scale. And, as you know, I've done that."

Lorraine led Alexander to the bar where the bartender immediately poured two shots of vodka. Settling onto a bar stool, Lorraine took one glass and gestured for her guest to take the other.

"I don't trust people easily, Mr. Cross," she said, eyeing him up over the rim of her shot glass. "So if you want to be in with the inner circle, you're going to have to prove yourself. Do you think you're ready for that?"

“It was my pleasure ma’am” Alexander said tipping his own head in acknowledgement. He saw Lorriane trying to ascertain him and smiled softly. He watched her stand up and he followed opening the door for her when they reached her office doors. Alexander walked with her out noticing her wave off the two guards making there way towards them.

“I would like that ma’am” Alex said watching her ass as they moved into the club. He saw people beginning to trickle into the club and looked around noticing the stead stream of people flocking into the bar. He saw the bartender pouring two shots of vodka and followed her.

“It is very impressive I heard it’s the hottest club in all of New York” Alexander said following her through the dancers and over to the bar. “I admire having the insight to move to grander things I am much like that my self” Alexander said gesturing to him self as he sat down. His fingers went to the scotch and he held it for a second before bringing it up and slamming it down.

“It’s why I went after the crime boss” Alexander said moving to the side to study her. “I wasn’t content to be a low level enforcer or climb up the ranks slowly” He said as another round of vodka was poured “so believe me when I say that I would be willing to do any thing and every thing to be a part of the inner circle” Alexander said grabbing the shot glass and raising it “just point me in the direction and ill do any thing and every thing to get it done” Alexander finishing flashing her a sexy smirk.

"That's what I was hoping you'd say." Lorraine grinned as she downed her second vodka shot.

Alexander was a man that she believed she could work with. He seemed eager enough, perhaps a little too eager, to please her and grow his ranking within her organization. He obviously was a man with grand ambitions, and, as long as he kept those ambitions in check, Lorraine believed she could easily work with him.

The club was starting to steadily fill up, bodies pressing close together as the pounding dance rhythm grew louder. Lorraine cast a glance towards the door where two gentleman, who stuck out like sore thumbs, had just entered. Damn cops. They were always trying to pin something on her. Luckily, nothing ever stuck.

"I'll be in touch with you, Mr. Cross." She said, slipping off the bar stool. Tossing her hair over her shoulder, she cast him one last smile. "I look forward to seeing some of your work for myself some day soon." And with that she turned on her heel and headed back to the stairwell and her office.

Closing the door of her office behind her, Lorraine flipped the security monitors on to the club floor, watching the cops closely as they tried to blend in with the much younger crowd. They needed to be dealt with, and swiftly. The cops needed a clear signal that Lorraine Costas was not to be trifled with. But how best to send that message?

Alexander saw the cops to and debated doing some thing about it. He knew Lorraine left because of them as he saw her eyes flicker over there before she abruptly called there meeting short. Alexander could do some thing about it but it might upset or make her angry if he did. He would be making an assumption that he wasn’t sure he was comfortable making. It was a tough choice and one he should probably make sooner rather than later.

Alexander saw the security camera above him and turned looking up at it. He discreetly tipped his head to the cops and then got up brushing his suit. He moved over to where they were at on the bar bumping into them and apologizing as he moved to a seat by the bartender.

“Tell me if she wants me to do some thing” Alexander said taking the police handgun he had stolen from the cops. He angled his hand making sure the security camera saw he had a gun. He tucked it back into his suit jacket ordering another Vodka shot and lifting it in a toast toward the camera.

Nestled back in her office with the security feed playing in front of her, Lorraine couldn't help the sardonic grin that tugged at her lips as she watched Alexander pinch the gun from one of the cops. She watched him flash the gun, briefly, in the direction of the camera.

Well isn't he a ballsy son-of-a-bitch. She tapped her fingers against the desktop, deep in thought as she watched Alexander speak to the bartender. He could definitely come in handy to her operation.

Pressing the intercom, Lorraine spoke quickly to her guards then returned her attention to the computer screen.

Austin, one of her best bodyguards, appeared on the screen, weaving his hulking form through the crowd. He approached Alexander and dipped his head down to whisper in the man's ear. Lorraine knew exactly what he was saying without having to read his lips.

He was giving Alexander the order she'd dictated to him only seconds before. Get rid of the cops. But make sure neither she nor her club could be tied to the murders in any way.

Lorraine looked forward to seeing how Alexander responded to her challenge.

Alexander raised an eyebrow and yawned before winking at the camera and getting off the barstool. The wink may have been too much but Lorriane seemed attracted to ballsy confident men or at the very least wanted them in her operation. Alexander smiled and went over to the cops flashing their own gun before heading out the exit. They saw him and swore checking their pockets as they tried to figure out which one of them got pick pocketed. They moved towards him calling out for him to stop. Alexander didn’t and as soon as he left the bar he broke out into a run before disappearing into an alleyway.

Thirty minutes later
Alexander stepped back into the club dusting off his jacket and walking back over to the bar. He sat down looking at the guard and the bartender before back up at the camera. He smiled and then pulled out each cops badge and gun. He placed them on the bar and raised an eye brow as if asking what was next.

He was good and he was quick, two things that Lorraine valued in those who worked for her.

Sitting back in her chair, she absentmindedly twirled a piece of hair around her finger, deep in thought. Her organization could use someone like Alexander. He was obviously willing to take whatever orders she had to throw at him. And he executed her demands perfectly.

But was he too ambitious? Was he too good at what he did? The thought gave Lorraine pause. Hard working men who would do anything for her was one thing. But a man with ambitions and aspirations of his own...well those kind of men needed to be kept in check. So what category did Alexander fall under?

"Austin, tell Mr. Cross that he has done well. Tell him that he may go home and await any further instructions."

With her orders given, Lorraine got up and strode over to the window that overlooked the city. She'd fought hard to get to where she was. She wasn't one to pussy foot around and let men make the decisions or take advantage of her. She was the Queen Bee and everyone else had to bow to her wishes and commands. But the question still nagged her, was Alexander Cross that kind of man? Would he be content to allow her to make the rules; to simply ask 'how high' when she ordered him to jump? Only time would tell.

Alexander saw Austin tell him to come home nodding and getting up. He looked up and bowed showing that he was at her command. HE moved out of the club and turned grabbing a smoke and lighting it as he went to his car. He opened it and stepped in pulling out and going to his apartment a small run down place a few miles away. He walked in putting his phone down on the table. He stripped out of his suit jacket and tie and stood there shirtless as he contemplated his situation.

Did he go to far?

Alexander thought about what he had known from Lorianne and decided to play it more calmly this time. He pulled out the cop pistol he nicked and tossed it away from his bed before falling down on it and falling asleep.
