Anyone got any hobbies that are generally counted as nerdy, weird or lame?

I still collect coins, and love live-action roleplay, neither of whch count as 'cool'.

I collect vintage lingerie.

Which doesn't sound all that geeky, until people find out that part of the collecting is a nerdy obsession with research, which means I get excited when I find things like books on the development of Bra Patent Design (1865- 1998)... or start babbling about the introduction of crystal pleated chiffon during the 1950s... or the development of rayon fibers pre vs post WWI, or the changes made to nylon formulas during the 1970s.

(Yes I own more lingerie than clothing...)

A Domme friend of mine perked up her ears when she heard a conversation about LARPing, up until she got the explanation of what it really is.

I'm a table-top board gamer from way back.

I often used to play D10 based table top, Vampire:the masquerade, or Mage:the ascension. I miss roleplay :(

Uhhh, since when was being geeky not cool? Geek IS the new cool. :D

I watch Star Trek, Star Wars, Good Eats, Mythbusters and other nerd shows/movies. I haven't missed an episode of Mythbusters since it came on the air!

I have been RPing for over ten years, both on forums and in chat. I've never LARP'd before, but only because there are no groups in my general area. I play DnD too.

I read comic books. I used to collect them when I was younger. The good ones, like the old X-men, Teen Titans and Warlord!

I can use words like "meme" and "torrent" in a sentence CORRECTLY. I know how to make pie charts. And I've read the lolcat bible.

I can spell deoxyribonucleicacid correctly.

I really wish I HAD a hobby, geeky or not. Besides reading. Reading is not really a hobby, it's someting I am driven to do.

Does obsessing about how to NOT have my children end up on a shrink's couch in 20 years count as a hobby? I do spend a lot of money of books in my pursuit of it.

Ummm.... you do realize there isn't anyway to prevent your children from ending up in therapy as adults, right? Try your best and embrace the f*ck-ups with as much honesty as possible. You'll save a fortune on parenting books.

;)

I know, and I'm getting better. But man, I really wanted to be able to do it all PERFECTLY. ROFL I was going to be the PERFECT MOM.

Now I"m just aiming for "good enough."

I have a grab bag of uncool hobbies.

A card game called Magic
Kickboxing
Inline skates
Tabletop games (mostly the painting)
Internet/ pc games

Perfect parenting can also put your kids on the shrinks couch. It's very intimidating.

My cousin linked this on her facebook the other day, and I though this was the perfect thread to share it in.

As in magic the gathering? We have tons of the cards and decks, but never play any more. I get too competetive and mean, and I'd end up getting spanked for it.

Warhammer and other tabletop wargames are damn nerdy
Roleplaying is also nerdy
Videogames used to be nerdy, not so much any more, especially with the advent of WoW and whatnot
Comic collecting
Rare book collecting
Coin collecting
Stamp collecting
Hell, collecting anything "rare"

Generally, a hobby which isn't an outside activity or requires extensive knowledge of a specific topic, will be considered "nerdy" by someone.

Unfortunately, what many forget is that encyclopedic knowledge of Major League Baseball is just as nerdy as encyclopedic knowledge of Dungeons and Dragons, and generally just as impractical in every day life.

Rare? Somebody said "rare"?

*perks up*

I don't collect them because I have oh so much not the funds to do so, but when I grow up I want to collect c18 & c19 erotica. Because ohmygoodness there is so much yummy pervertedness and ink and chain laid paper and etchings and leather in eighteenth & nineteenth century erotica. The language alone... and don't even get me started on typeface...

I do scrounge the local thrift stores for beat up sci-fi books from the 40s-60s. But no one thinks that's cool at all. Just pathetic.

Wait, that discourages it from happening? Seems like it would just make it more fun. ;)

I collect coins. And I still have my beanie babies that I collected back in HS but I'm no actively seeking those out.

Boardgames and renaissance/baroque music, both playing myself and actively listening to stuff and going to concerts.

I make imaginary stats up from hockey players who never existed or who will never exist. I also come up with stats for teams that never existed and will never exist. sometimes I get ambitious and make whole leagues like this.

Yeah. My dad doesn't understand me with all these pages of numbers I have written in several notebooks.

I don't know if I'd call it 'uncool' but I collect scarves. I used to collect fans and unicorns but over the years the kids have broken ever single freaken one. I have tons and tons of shells, but I wouldn't say I collect them, so much as allow the kids to give them to me as presents. Oh, I used to collect jewelry boxes, but they're all broke now, too.

I guess I collect scarves cause they're hard to ruin. Plus the kids LOVE to dress up in them; I have some huge silk scarves that make great dresses/skirts/capes.
