ONE YEAR AGO

“Come in close the door”

He stepped in his firm tan hand gripping the handle as he pulled the heavy door closed. His hand stayed on the door knob his body refusing to move deeper into the room. Panic gripped his chest as he heard the faint beep beep of his wife’s vitals. Tears began to rise in his jade green eyes and his adams apple bobbed as he took a shuddering gulp.

“Alonzo…. It’s okay” His wife said her voice week as she coughed.

“It isn’t okay!” He said finally removing his hands from the door and turning to her. He walked over to her his eyes taking in her frail sickly body as anger coursed through his eyes.

“It wasn’t supposed to be like this” He told her taking her small hands in his large calloused ones “we still had so many years together Cecile so many plans”
She laughed shaking her head and gazing at him.

“I had plans my love” She reminded him “You were to focused on your company on the little things that made you happy…. You never were one for an adventure”

“You were all the adventure I needed!” He said chuckling as tears ran down his tan cheeks “What am I going to do without you?”

“Oh you’ll never be without me” Cecile said bringing his hand up and pressing her dry lips against his knuckles “However I do have a request”

“Anything” Alonzo said as he choked back a sob.

“I know you my husband” Cecile said her voice firm “I know how stubborn you can be. I know given the chance you will refuse to move on and lock yourself away in our home. You’re a good businessman but not so good at living your life alone. I do not wish for you to be alone, you are far too young for that. Promise me you will find someone, someone who will take you on adventures that I didn’t get to take you on. Promise me”

“You want me to be with someone else?” Alonzo said in shock “I could never my love”

“You will” Cecile said her tone firm “You’re 44 years old. You still have so much life to have. Promise me Alonzo please”

He growled and rose pushing back the hospital chair he sat in. He ran a hand through his thick salt and pepper hair as he paced the room. His shoulders shook from his grief as well as his anger at her words. Never would he have expected his wife to take such a stance. What happened to the jealous woman who refused to let him even LOOK at another woman? Not that he ever truly looked, they were high school sweethearts turned life partners and even though they never got to enjoy the world of children because of her he never regretted her decision.

“I don’t think I can do this” He finally said turning to her “We’ve been through too much Mi Amore”

“This is my decision” Cecile said beckoning him back over “I will not keep you from living a life. You could be here another forty years Alonzo. I want each and every day to be one you remember. Retire find a passion and find someone to share it with. Promise me”

He searched her eyes trying to make sense of what she was feeling. Surely this was a joke? Or something she wasn’t thinking through?

But he knew better.

His wife thought everything through. Cecile was the girl who made up her mind and then worked to accomplish said goals. If she was asking him to promise such a thing then it meant it was what she wanted. The fight left his body as his eyes locked with her steely gaze and before he knew it he was opening his mouth.

“Very well Cecile…”

“I promise.”

PRESENT DAY

SUMMER

His phone echoed through the large estate reverberating off the oak wood panels. At the far end of the house he rose groaning as he pushed away the pillows and blankets over his head. His large hand reached out slapping his phone and trying to find it on the dresser table. Instead his hand hit a bottle and sent it spinning off of the counter and onto the plush rug. He heard it striking another bottle and he groaned wincing as the heavy drinking he did last night finally reared its ugly head.

Alonzo pushed the covers off and moved off of the bed. His bare feet touched the carpet and the cool alcohol bottles. There were three on the floor all of them drained a testament to his depression and the drinking problem he seemed to have picked up somewhere. Alonzo did his best to ignore it as he moved to the bathroom entirely naked. He groaned in pleasure when the soles of his foot touched the heated tile moaning in pleasure as his ass flexed and relaxed. He shrugged his broad shoulders rolling them as his back muscles tightened in response.

He padded over to the toilet and after doing his business went to go brush his teeth. He did his best to ignore the mirrors these days not wanting to take in his rough unkempt hair and five o clock shadow. The worst was the beer gut that was slowly starting to form in place of his usual muscular pecs and stomach. After so many years of construction work retirement was slowly killing his body….
Well retirement and depression.

He brushed hopped in the shower and an hour later came out refreshed and slightly more well maintained. He pulled on a robe and left the bedroom pausing to lightly touch the picture of he and Cecile.

“I miss you more and more every day Mi Amore” He told her. He moved down the wooden staircase and after wiping at his tears went to go get some food.

He spent his morning alone eating a light breakfast on the porch. Outside he could see Vermont in all its glory from the rolling hills to the large lush trees. There was an apple grove next to his home and he watched the men move up and down tending to it. He drank his Irish coffee as he ate taking comfort in the bite of alcohol. In the back of his head he could hear Cecile voice that same nagging voice that wasn’t pleased with his decisions so far.

“I know I know” He told the voice finishing his food “I broke my promise! So what?”

Before the voice could say anything more his phone rang again. He grumbled and got up leaving the rest of his coffee as he moved from the large expansive kitchen to his office. He grabbed his phone from the charger checking the collar ID before sinking into his chair.

“What is it Mike?” Alfonzo asked his voice annoyed as spoke to his partner.
“Just wondering if you are coming in today” Mike replied over the din noise of construction work “Cecile told me not to let you mope”

“You’ve been doing it for a year already” Alfonzo shot back his fingers drumming on his laptop “Why don’t you give it up?”

“Because it’s not good for you man” Mike said his voice tinged with sympathy “I know it hurts. Cecile was my friend to but she wanted you to move on man. Not drink yourself to an early grave”

“What I do is my own business!” Alfonzo said growling and standing up “We all can’t be old bachelors like you!”

“Well that’s what I was actually calling about” Mike said ignoring the jab “I wanted to give you the news first….. I’m getting married!”

Alfonzo blinked his mouth hanging open in surprise. For once in a year Alfonzo felt something other than grief. The idea that his friend the notorious single man who dated around and somehow managed to do it even at 40 was getting married?

“Your pulling my leg” Alfonzo said laughing for the first time in a year “You CAN’T be getting married”

“But I am” Mike said and Alfonzo could hear the smile in his voice “I met a girl online”

“Online?” Alfonzo said raising an eyebrow “Is this legit?”

“Entirely” Mike said as the sound of construction faded. Alfonzo heard a door slam and his mind brought up the image of Mike moving into their onsite office.

“I met her on a sugar baby website” Mike explained in a hushed voice “She’s 23!”
“Cecile was right” Alfonzo said shaking his head and sinking back into his office chair “You are a man whore”

“Oh it’s not like that!” Mike said “It’s all consensual and everyone knows what they are there for! Its not just about the money, it’s also about young girls who like old men like you and me”

“If you say so” Alfonzo said his tone dismissive “It’s all romance and love until the young bride kills you and leaves with her handsome “brother”.”
Mike laughed at his words.

“You’re such a downer!” Mike said as the sound of typing came over the phone “I sent you the website take a look when you have a chance”

“Fat chance” Alfonzo said his hand hovering on the end button “Congrats Mike”
He ended the call and tossed his phone on his desk. He leaned back chuckling at the situation and his friend. He could already see it now some beautiful young girl who would promise Mike the world. His friend was a fool that would get his heart torn out and all for some young vibrant….

He frowned his eyes flickering to his computer. What was he thinking finding a girl off of a website? In the many years he knew Mike he had never seemed into online dating. What was so special about this website that caused Mike to go to it.
Before Alfonzo knew it he was opening his laptop and booting it up. He accessed his email and sure enough there was the website address. Alfonzo dragged his curser over to it and with one click a website was popping up promising his heart’s desire.

The website so aptly named Cupid’s Arrow promised older rich men the chance to spend time a beautiful young lady who was into them and not their money. Alfonzo couldn’t help but snort at that yet his eyes ran down the pictures and list of young women. There was no one on the website older than 25 and every nationality and type was represented on the website. He got up and fixed himself a finger of scotch coming back and sipping it as he scanned the girls once more.
Then he saw her

She was near the bottom tucked in between two other girls. He didn’t know what it was about her but he found himself starring at her. His cursor moved again clicking on her picture as her information appeared. His eyes ranked in the details from her age which was 19 to her name Bethany. Her profile was sweet talking about being a newcomer to the website. There was just something so… real about her something so inviting.

His fingers began to tap on the keyboard creating a profile and entering his card information. Once the card information was entered he created his profile marking himself as a widow and forty-five years of age before filling out a short bio. He talked mostly about his construction company which he built up with Mike on his own. He described himself as a self-made man someone who believed in honesty and hard work. He capped it off with a picture from last year’s office Christmas party one of him in a suit.

With that done he reached out contacting the girl. He wrote a quick message telling her how he found her in the website and that she was the reason he joined. He spoke openly and plainly citing his attraction for her and wondering if she was willing to meet. He did all this on auto pilot doing his best not to think about it. Once the message was typed out he hit send and leaned back to admire his work.
Gradually what he did dawned onto him. His eyes widened in shock as reality hit and the older man practically jumped out of his seat.

“I need a haircut” He whispered his eyes flickering up to his long locks of hair. He moved out of the room quickly leaving the computer open as the message was sent and dropped into the inbox of one nineteen year old girl.

The man sitting in the café booth, awaiting Bethany's arrival for a quick midday meet and greet, looked like he was going to explode from tension building within him. Who knows, maybe that was his normal expression and body language; you just never knew about people until you got to know them better. That tension was replaced with something different, though, when the woman who dropped in across from him was obviously not the one who had led Alonzo to join Cupid's Arrow.

"Hi, I'm Tabitha," she said, offering a hand out to him across the table. "I'm a friend of Bethany's."

He was obviously shocked or maybe simply confused. Or maybe the little head was rapidly acquiring all of the blood that had previously been housed in the big head. Tabitha was not in anyway physically similar to the young woman the man across from her had been expecting. Tabitha was three cup sized larger Bethany, made only more obvious by the bra that brought her impressive bosom up and in, its black lace showing between the lapels of the thin white blouse that could have had another button or two fastened. And her dramatic figure -- 36-24-34 with a height of 5'10 even further emphasized by 4 inch heels -- was significantly different from Bethany's shape of 32B-26-32 and significantly shorter height of 5'4". Toss in a head of deep black, wildly tossed hair as opposed to Bethany's sun-bleached dirty blonde, and a dramatically painted face when the right girl's online picture had featured little more than lipstick and a touch of eye liner, and ... well ... definitely different women.

"I should probably explain," Tabitha began quickly, wanting to diffuse any situation that was liable to rise as the man before her began to wonder whether or not he'd been duped or was being played. "Beth needed to get out and meet some men ... good men. The guys she already knows -- young guys, our age -- are losers, and she doesn't have the ... let's call it drive to get out and meet someone who might be better for her ... like yourself."

The waitress stepped up, and Tabitha asked for an espresso and a club sandwich.

"So ... I signed her up on Cupid's Arrow," she continued almost without missing a beat. "And, of course, she hates me for it. But, she got over it after seeing your picture ... and your bio ... and your invitation to meet. She thinks your swell. Her word, not mine."

She let her gaze fall to his torso which -- despite his recent weight gain from too much beer -- was still looking fine in his sports jacket and well fitting shirt. She smiled in appreciation, continuing, "My word would have been hell yeah. I guess that's two words, isn't it."

A couple passed, causing Tabitha to pause before continuing, "But ... she isn't coming. It took me three hours to convince her to give it a try ... two more to get her dressed in something appropriate ... and ... well, no ... sorry. But ... if you want to sit and visit for a while ... if you aren't too disappointed with the unexpected lunch date..."

She paused again while the waitress set her order down, asked if there would be any more needed, then departed, then looked back to Alonzo and continued in a quieter volume, "...if you aren't entirely opposed to perhaps getting to know one another ... and get out of here ... find somewhere else ... somewhere more private ... to continue our lunch date..."

Tabitha paused, giving the man time to understand that she was, in fact, proposing they make their way to a local motel and get busy before shrugging playfully and finishing, "...I wouldn't be opposed to that either."

He didn’t phone Mike partly out of embarrassment but mostly because he didn’t want to hear the mans “I told you so”. With something to look forward to and get out of bed each morning for the days began to pass quickly as Alfonzo prepared himself for his date with the women he contacted through the website. He went to the barbers getting his hair cut and styled, he made sure to keep the grays in his hair not wanting to seem fake in anyway. It was a point of pride to him that he was getting older and it reflected in his time less appearance. A new suit was needed for the event which warranted a trip to the tailor for one customized for him. He walked out with a charcoal gray suit with a silver tie expertly cut against his body.

He was stepping out when he received an alert from his phone. He opened it and his eyes widened in pleasure when he realized the woman sent him an email back. His eyes poured over it as he moved toward his BMW reading through the lines. Everything was set! Which meant that he officially had a date with a much younger woman.

He didn’t know how to feel about that just yet. His going on the site was simply out of curiosity. He wasn’t expecting nor really in the market to date a young woman. If it wasn’t for the girl and the picture that drew him in he probably would have exited out of it entirely! Yet… something did draw him in. Something about her that made him want to reach out. He supposed it could be just loneliness but he didn’t think so. He had poured over her bio reading it several times and finding something to delight in each and every time. So there was something there beyond simple perverted lust.

Alfonzo decided to devote himself to preparing for the night instead of dwelling and analyzing it. There was nothing to be done about the beer belly but he made a point to limit his drinking and start using his gym again. It wasn’t long before the joy of physical exercise came back to him and he pushed himself on the treadmill as he studied the girl and her profile. There wasn’t much on there but what little there was he soaked up and did his best to learn. The curiosity and connection to her didn’t go away as he studied it and if anything only grew.

Not once did he stop moving knowing if he did he would chicken out. He still talked to his wife every day but avoided the subject even if he knew she would approve. He still wasn’t sure how he felt about the whole thing if it was his gut that was leading the charge or his determination to follow through on his last promise to his wife. He visited her grave on the day of the date bringing her fresh flowers and putting his hand on her headstone for a few minutes.

“I hope I know what I am doing” Alfonzo murmured taking a deep breath. He patted the grave and turned moving towards his car. He slid into the fancy car and without any other fanfare drove to the restaurant they were set up to meet at.
He got there first and after getting his car parked by a valet went over to the bar. He slid into the seat and turned watching for her as he ordered a scotch. He sipped it as he waited reminding himself of his self-imposed three drink limits. Once their table was available he went to sit down still craning his neck to look for her. He refused to worry about her coming and decided that if he was stood up he would still enjoy dinner.

Then things got significantly stranger.

A woman walked in a woman who looked totally in place with the high-end café he was sitting in. She was a pretty thing with the sort of chest men openly gawk at and a face that broke hearts. Her makeup was impeccable (or at least looked like it to him) and her legs moved in a confident swaying gait as she came over to him. Alfonzo blinked in confusion as she slid into the booth across from him. Was this the actual Bethany? Was her picture a lie or someone else?

The woman spoke calling herself Tabatha and explaining the situation. Alfonzo relaxed and then frowned in sadness when he realized Bethany wasn’t coming. He was so shocked by the situation that the woman had ample enough time to explain and even order! Meanwhile he simply sat there his head down as he struggled to keep it all together. He put himself out there. Got interested in some one (a young woman) and used it to get himself out of his funk. Now he was nothing more than a fool a fool who got stood up!

He felt that opening of blackness inside himself and felt his eyes beginning to well up with tears. He cleared his throat and raised his hand forgoing his three-drink limit and ordering himself his second scotch. The woman in front of him the one sent in Bethany’s stead complimented him and he shrugged his eyes betraying him to show the pain he was in.

“Well I suppose there is no sense in wasting a reservation” He said as his scotch came and he tipped it back. He drained it in one gulp and slammed it down a little harder than what was needed.

“So why send you in her stead?” He asked openly as her food came. He turned and ordered a plate of appetizers for himself and leaned back to regard her.

Tabitha's lips spread in a sly smile. "Actually ... Beth doesn't know I'm here. She thinks I cancelled the date. She couldn't come ... but she did, in fact, shoot those arrows at you."

To add a unique twist to the site, Cupid's Arrow referred to private messages sent between clients as arrows. In fact, when they arrived at a recipient's phone, tablet or, laptop, they made a trio of sounds intended to simulate an arrow being fired, flying through the air, and hitting it's target.

"But when it came to getting her out the door, well ... she ... I just couldn't get her through with it."

The waitress arrived with some appetizers, and when the pair was again alone Tabitha sat up a bit taller -- emphasizing her impressive chest -- and asked with that sly smile again, "But ... will I do instead?"

She glanced about for eavesdroppers, leaned forward -- only giving Alfonzo an even better view of her cleavage -- before saying suggestively, "And I will do ... as in, do anything ... pretty much anyway. I just ... well ... I wanted you to know that I find you very attractive ... very handsome. And I wouldn't say no to ... well ... just about anything, actually."

Alfonzo eyes practically bulged out of his head when she leaned in and propositioned herself. His mouth hung open slightly momentarily shocked out of his sour dour feeling. Was this woman actually? She was! Propositioning him and saying he was quite handsome! Not only that but she didn’t cancel the date came in Bethany’s stead because she was that eager to meet him. He blushed at the implication that a young woman was into him and thought enough of him to come out and meet him.

“I uh” He said gulping as he tugged at the collar of his suit “I don’t really know what to say”

He paused long enough to order a glass of water before continuing.

“I’m a widow” He explained placing his palms on the table “My wife died a year ago and we didn’t have any children. I was in something of a rutt and only joined the website on a whim. My friend mike is getting married to a sugar baby and so I was curious despite myself. I came onto the site and didn’t think much of it until I saw your friends profile”

The water came and he took a hurried sip before continuing.

“Now that she isn’t coming im kind of at a loss” He explained smiling softly “I wasn’t expecting for another young pretty woman such as yourself and to think you would want to do well that with me is kind of shocking! Are you a part of the website to? Are you someone looking for a sugar daddy or did you just get wrapped up in it because it was your friend?”

"No, I'm not looking for a sugar daddy," Tabitha answered, explaining, "I have mine already. But ... sometimes, when he's away ... well, what's that old saying about the cats wanting to play?"

Tabitha hesitated as a couple passed, led by the hostess to their table. She looked back to Alfonzo. "But, more than that ... I feel responsible for what happened -- or didn't happen -- between you and Bethany tonight. Bethany has seen first hand what I like about my current situation ... the apartment ... the clothes ... the cash. But ... she's also seen what I don't like about it. My ... gentleman friend ... well, he's not much of a gentleman when we're naked together."

She hesitated as a passing couple had heard her last few words. Tabitha smiled up at the staring pair and -- gesturing between Alfonzo and herself -- said quite calmly, "Unless you're wanting to get naked with us, this conversation doesn't really involve you."

The eyes and mouth of the female half of the couple widened, but her husband only chuckled lightly before continue the pair of them on their way. Tabitha looked back to Alfonzo and finished, "That's why I'm here tonight. I'm here to ... well, for lack of a better word ... interview you. Ask ... see ... and experience what you would want from a sugar baby."

She smiled, saying, "Think of it as killing two birds with one stone. I get something a little bit different from my own sugar daddy ... and I get to decide whether I want my friend to have you as hers. Interested ... or, shall we call it a night?"

Alfonzo sipped his water as she explained what she was doing here. He was surprised and a little impressed when she so freely said that she was part of the life style and involved with someone. Was there a whole community of these people living among everyone else? Or was it so prevalent because this was a richer area? When she handled the nosy couple he chuckled softly clearly impressed with what she did. His nimble calloused fingers tapped against the cool perspiring glass of water he was nursing. He leaned in giving her his undivided attention as his intense eyes locked on to her.

“I see” He finally said as she finished and asked if he wanted to leave. Surprisingly he found he wanted to do anything but.

“No we shouldn’t” Alfonzo said feeling better about the entire situation. He turned to the waitress gesturing for him to bring the menu and pushing the appetizers forward for her to enjoy. He relaxed shrugging his shoulders and dissipating some of the tension he carried in them as he leaned back in his chair. The waitress came moments later ready to take their order. He pointed out several things she might like in the high priced French cuisine before ordering himself a leg of lamb. He waited until she ordered and the waitress left before speaking.

“I joined the sight purely out of curiosity” He admitted “My friend Mark is getting married to a woman he met on the site and I was purely curious. I found myself… intrigued by the whole thing but the only woman who really caught my eye was your friend. I’m not sure about the whole sugar daddy sugar baby thing. However I would be lying if it didn’t hold a certain appeal to me. My wife before she died told me to be more spontaneous and have some adventures. She was the wilder one I haven’t really done anything to life up to that promise this last year.”
