ONE YEAR AGO
“Come in close the door”
He stepped in his firm tan hand gripping the handle as he pulled the heavy door closed. His hand stayed on the door knob his body refusing to move deeper into the room. Panic gripped his chest as he heard the faint beep beep of his wife’s vitals. Tears began to rise in his jade green eyes and his adams apple bobbed as he took a shuddering gulp.
“Alonzo…. It’s okay” His wife said her voice week as she coughed.
“It isn’t okay!” He said finally removing his hands from the door and turning to her. He walked over to her his eyes taking in her frail sickly body as anger coursed through his eyes.
“It wasn’t supposed to be like this” He told her taking her small hands in his large calloused ones “we still had so many years together Cecile so many plans”
She laughed shaking her head and gazing at him.
“I had plans my love” She reminded him “You were to focused on your company on the little things that made you happy…. You never were one for an adventure”
“You were all the adventure I needed!” He said chuckling as tears ran down his tan cheeks “What am I going to do without you?”
“Oh you’ll never be without me” Cecile said bringing his hand up and pressing her dry lips against his knuckles “However I do have a request”
“Anything” Alonzo said as he choked back a sob.
“I know you my husband” Cecile said her voice firm “I know how stubborn you can be. I know given the chance you will refuse to move on and lock yourself away in our home. You’re a good businessman but not so good at living your life alone. I do not wish for you to be alone, you are far too young for that. Promise me you will find someone, someone who will take you on adventures that I didn’t get to take you on. Promise me”
“You want me to be with someone else?” Alonzo said in shock “I could never my love”
“You will” Cecile said her tone firm “You’re 44 years old. You still have so much life to have. Promise me Alonzo please”
He growled and rose pushing back the hospital chair he sat in. He ran a hand through his thick salt and pepper hair as he paced the room. His shoulders shook from his grief as well as his anger at her words. Never would he have expected his wife to take such a stance. What happened to the jealous woman who refused to let him even LOOK at another woman? Not that he ever truly looked, they were high school sweethearts turned life partners and even though they never got to enjoy the world of children because of her he never regretted her decision.
“I don’t think I can do this” He finally said turning to her “We’ve been through too much Mi Amore”
“This is my decision” Cecile said beckoning him back over “I will not keep you from living a life. You could be here another forty years Alonzo. I want each and every day to be one you remember. Retire find a passion and find someone to share it with. Promise me”
He searched her eyes trying to make sense of what she was feeling. Surely this was a joke? Or something she wasn’t thinking through?
But he knew better.
His wife thought everything through. Cecile was the girl who made up her mind and then worked to accomplish said goals. If she was asking him to promise such a thing then it meant it was what she wanted. The fight left his body as his eyes locked with her steely gaze and before he knew it he was opening his mouth.
“Very well Cecile…”
“I promise.”

PRESENT DAY
SUMMER
His phone echoed through the large estate reverberating off the oak wood panels. At the far end of the house he rose groaning as he pushed away the pillows and blankets over his head. His large hand reached out slapping his phone and trying to find it on the dresser table. Instead his hand hit a bottle and sent it spinning off of the counter and onto the plush rug. He heard it striking another bottle and he groaned wincing as the heavy drinking he did last night finally reared its ugly head.
Alonzo pushed the covers off and moved off of the bed. His bare feet touched the carpet and the cool alcohol bottles. There were three on the floor all of them drained a testament to his depression and the drinking problem he seemed to have picked up somewhere. Alonzo did his best to ignore it as he moved to the bathroom entirely naked. He groaned in pleasure when the soles of his foot touched the heated tile moaning in pleasure as his ass flexed and relaxed. He shrugged his broad shoulders rolling them as his back muscles tightened in response.
He padded over to the toilet and after doing his business went to go brush his teeth. He did his best to ignore the mirrors these days not wanting to take in his rough unkempt hair and five o clock shadow. The worst was the beer gut that was slowly starting to form in place of his usual muscular pecs and stomach. After so many years of construction work retirement was slowly killing his body….
Well retirement and depression.
He brushed hopped in the shower and an hour later came out refreshed and slightly more well maintained. He pulled on a robe and left the bedroom pausing to lightly touch the picture of he and Cecile.
“I miss you more and more every day Mi Amore” He told her. He moved down the wooden staircase and after wiping at his tears went to go get some food.
He spent his morning alone eating a light breakfast on the porch. Outside he could see Vermont in all its glory from the rolling hills to the large lush trees. There was an apple grove next to his home and he watched the men move up and down tending to it. He drank his Irish coffee as he ate taking comfort in the bite of alcohol. In the back of his head he could hear Cecile voice that same nagging voice that wasn’t pleased with his decisions so far.
“I know I know” He told the voice finishing his food “I broke my promise! So what?”
Before the voice could say anything more his phone rang again. He grumbled and got up leaving the rest of his coffee as he moved from the large expansive kitchen to his office. He grabbed his phone from the charger checking the collar ID before sinking into his chair.
“What is it Mike?” Alfonzo asked his voice annoyed as spoke to his partner.
“Just wondering if you are coming in today” Mike replied over the din noise of construction work “Cecile told me not to let you mope”
“You’ve been doing it for a year already” Alfonzo shot back his fingers drumming on his laptop “Why don’t you give it up?”
“Because it’s not good for you man” Mike said his voice tinged with sympathy “I know it hurts. Cecile was my friend to but she wanted you to move on man. Not drink yourself to an early grave”
“What I do is my own business!” Alfonzo said growling and standing up “We all can’t be old bachelors like you!”
“Well that’s what I was actually calling about” Mike said ignoring the jab “I wanted to give you the news first….. I’m getting married!”
Alfonzo blinked his mouth hanging open in surprise. For once in a year Alfonzo felt something other than grief. The idea that his friend the notorious single man who dated around and somehow managed to do it even at 40 was getting married?
“Your pulling my leg” Alfonzo said laughing for the first time in a year “You CAN’T be getting married”
“But I am” Mike said and Alfonzo could hear the smile in his voice “I met a girl online”
“Online?” Alfonzo said raising an eyebrow “Is this legit?”
“Entirely” Mike said as the sound of construction faded. Alfonzo heard a door slam and his mind brought up the image of Mike moving into their onsite office.
“I met her on a sugar baby website” Mike explained in a hushed voice “She’s 23!”
“Cecile was right” Alfonzo said shaking his head and sinking back into his office chair “You are a man whore”
“Oh it’s not like that!” Mike said “It’s all consensual and everyone knows what they are there for! Its not just about the money, it’s also about young girls who like old men like you and me”
“If you say so” Alfonzo said his tone dismissive “It’s all romance and love until the young bride kills you and leaves with her handsome “brother”.”
Mike laughed at his words.
“You’re such a downer!” Mike said as the sound of typing came over the phone “I sent you the website take a look when you have a chance”
“Fat chance” Alfonzo said his hand hovering on the end button “Congrats Mike”
He ended the call and tossed his phone on his desk. He leaned back chuckling at the situation and his friend. He could already see it now some beautiful young girl who would promise Mike the world. His friend was a fool that would get his heart torn out and all for some young vibrant….
He frowned his eyes flickering to his computer. What was he thinking finding a girl off of a website? In the many years he knew Mike he had never seemed into online dating. What was so special about this website that caused Mike to go to it.
Before Alfonzo knew it he was opening his laptop and booting it up. He accessed his email and sure enough there was the website address. Alfonzo dragged his curser over to it and with one click a website was popping up promising his heart’s desire.
The website so aptly named Cupid’s Arrow promised older rich men the chance to spend time a beautiful young lady who was into them and not their money. Alfonzo couldn’t help but snort at that yet his eyes ran down the pictures and list of young women. There was no one on the website older than 25 and every nationality and type was represented on the website. He got up and fixed himself a finger of scotch coming back and sipping it as he scanned the girls once more.
Then he saw her
She was near the bottom tucked in between two other girls. He didn’t know what it was about her but he found himself starring at her. His cursor moved again clicking on her picture as her information appeared. His eyes ranked in the details from her age which was 19 to her name Bethany. Her profile was sweet talking about being a newcomer to the website. There was just something so… real about her something so inviting.
His fingers began to tap on the keyboard creating a profile and entering his card information. Once the card information was entered he created his profile marking himself as a widow and forty-five years of age before filling out a short bio. He talked mostly about his construction company which he built up with Mike on his own. He described himself as a self-made man someone who believed in honesty and hard work. He capped it off with a picture from last year’s office Christmas party one of him in a suit.
With that done he reached out contacting the girl. He wrote a quick message telling her how he found her in the website and that she was the reason he joined. He spoke openly and plainly citing his attraction for her and wondering if she was willing to meet. He did all this on auto pilot doing his best not to think about it. Once the message was typed out he hit send and leaned back to admire his work.
Gradually what he did dawned onto him. His eyes widened in shock as reality hit and the older man practically jumped out of his seat.
“I need a haircut” He whispered his eyes flickering up to his long locks of hair. He moved out of the room quickly leaving the computer open as the message was sent and dropped into the inbox of one nineteen year old girl.
“Come in close the door”
He stepped in his firm tan hand gripping the handle as he pulled the heavy door closed. His hand stayed on the door knob his body refusing to move deeper into the room.
