Unauthorized downloading of Lit stories

For quite a few years, I've heard complaints from AH about how their stories have been ripped from Lit and then used on other sites without their authorization. I've never understood the complaint because Lit is a free site and all stories on it are free. So, my post is directed at anyone who might get pissed off that their story is listed somewhere else ... just how many songs, movies, tv shows and porn flicks have you downloaded from P2P sites lately?

In my case, none.

If somebody copies one of my stories on another site and credits me and Lit., I have no problem with that. If somebody copies it on another free site without appropriate credit, it bothers me somewhat. If someone copies it on a pay site or uses it as advertising copy, it bothers me a lot, because I am being cheated out of royalties I believe are due me. The worst kind is actually plagiarizing a story of mine by somebody who claims authorship of it.

Ah, silly Charley.

Why do I feel you're starting this thread just to rattle cages around here for some sick and twisted personal gain? ;)

It doesn't bother me when someone downloads my stories or prints them off for their own personal use.

No, it is when they are taken by someone who puts them forward as their own work that causes the anger.

It's when they are taken without permission and used by a porn site that makes money that causes the frustration.

I can share.

But not when credit or compensation is denied.

Oh, I have no problem at all with somebody downloading and printing a story of mine to read or to show around or forward to somebody. I even encourage it when I write a story for a specific reader. If I knew about somebody doing it, I would be highly flattered. That's just the person's own use, which is fine with me.

Sick and twisted, Sweets? Never! Just realistic, really. I mean I download shit all the time, but I never complain when a story of mine is ripped. Yeah, I'd be pissed if I found a story of mine that was plagerized (nods to Box, also), but I'm not sure I care if my story is 'ripped'. Yes, people are stealing my story when they post it (authors name in tact) elsewhere, but as a person who "steals music and tv show and movies" I can't be angry if I find my story on another site. Could you?

I can't wait until the zealot types see this thread. :D :D

Sharing my stuff for free. Cool.

Using my stuff to make money. Not cool.

Using my stuff without crediting me. Not cool.

With you being an artist and all, though, how about people sharing for free the stuff you spent money on making or expect to make money on, like your music?

Been downloading any songs lately?

Legally, yes.

Not illegally since I found convenient, high quality digital stores without DRM (or DRM terms i can accept and/or circumvent). I'm too lazy to hunt for free downloads for my slightly off-mainstream tastes.

I see files of our music on file sharing sites as promotion material for us as a brandname, like airplay on radio. The more people stumble over our stuff, the more people might regognize the name and show up at gigs. I couldnt wish for better viral marketing. It's not happening nearly as much as I'd want it to though. Might have to do something about that...

If we were a platinum selling act with a major label and a marketing budget, I might feel differently.

Touche - well played, sir. :D

A lot of successful musicians have learned to direct the free downloading-- offering freebies on their websites or at myspace.
Generally, bands don't make much money on their recorded music, they make it on tours and ticket sales. Singles sales are the most minimal part of the profits.

I've downloaded a lot of music that I've already bought twice-- once on vinyl and once on cassette, and some things I've paid for three times. I'd rather send the artist a dollar and cut Sony out of the middle.

COOL! You still have vinyl! I used to own about a thousand or so records (I won't tell you what for fear of my own embarrassment - lol), some even unwrapped, but alas, my parents basement moulded all. Sad. I still haven't been able to get everything back. What did you own on vinyl that you needed to keep paying for? (PS - I do mean what records/ artist do/would you keep paying for?)

I have one box of the stuff that seemed like it might never become available on CD. One incredible album is David Bowie, singing four songs by Bertold Brecht, from a play called "Baal" Another is Dave Alvin of The Blasters, playing piano rags... The whole of the Iggy and the Stooges catalogue, "Sticky Fingers" with the zipper still in place, some Beach Boys rarities. A lot of the glam rockers, a lot of Ska, a lot of punk. Bach's flute sonatas. ;)

The thing is, I've travelled, and I've moved so often. It's been decades since I've had a record player, and CDs are sturdier and more compact.

Right now, they are all at my young neighbors' house, and they are beside themselves with delight about it! It's funny to hear "All the Young Dudes" blasting out from the next door window.

What have I bought more than once... The Stones, the Who, the Doors, Beach Boys, David Bowie, T Rex, The Stooges, Miles Davis, The London Symphony Players' versions of Beethoven's symphonies, Prokofiev, Rachmaninov, Strauss, the Beatles (for my kids) Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, the list goes on and on. :D

Like, the internet is free, man. You can't OWN a song or a work of art, it belongs to us all. Knowledge and information and music and art and stuff should be like, free for all, man. Groovy.:rose:

Interesting question. My tastes have changed so I waver about Robin Trower and Uriah Heep. And the rocker dude Cher had an affair with. No, not him, the other one. ;)

Let's see, then. Sticky Fingers (I have the zipper cover intact too. I also have the Lynyrd Skynyrd Street survivors album with the banned fire cover got it before it was recalled), Neil Young, The Beatles, Leon Russell-Will o the Wisp, some Roxy Music, some Marshall Tucker, old Fleetwood Mac back when they were blusier, Bob Marley, some Led Zeppelin, Traffic's John Barleycorn Must Die and I'm sure a few others I can't recall right now.

How about you?

I don't take songs, movies, etc. I don't know, somebody took 155 of my 192 submissions and there does't seem to be anything I can do it. The site that has them won't respond to me.

She's got mine, too.

I'll start with a PM to Laurel. I imagine she's swiped quite a bit from Lit.

They even have my latest for the How to contest.

When you click on them, though, it links you to the story posted on Lit.

Tell Laurel to get mine too:D I don't know, when you click one of mine Lit doesn't come up. I think on mine they all say something like submitted January 30, 2008 or something. Somebody else found 'em and let me know a couple months ago. Whoever it was though gave me an upper B for the screen name which is what I meant to do. I just joined as bearleebear so maybe I'll go comment on some of my stuff:rolleyes:

I go look for one of your stories and give you a great vote;)

Oh Stella! you've made me yearn to dig out my box of vinyl and uncover the turntable again!
I have "Baal" too - I'd completely forgotten its existence till I read your post.

Not sure if that was for me or sarahh but yeah, I did there and I believe I did it by contacting direct. Doesn't matter, the stuff is still there and no, no response

yes, it was for you-- I had very carefully explained the things you'd already said

PM laurel, like sarahh says. Email never gets through to her--PMs do.

I can't seem to get to scores or anything. Every time I click on things it goes back to Lit. Which isn't a bad thing, by the way. :D
