Somehow the peaceniks convoluted the mission of the inspectors from validating that there were no WMD's to destroying whatever ones they find (of course, they can't possibly find everything, but ssshhhhh, we can't have the Americans and their cowboy president be right about anything).

This is what happens when you involve the UN. In anything. In the words of Teddy Roosevelt, they have all the backbone of a chocolate eclair.

Baghdad - Chemical weapons experts trekked into the Iraqi desert on Wednesday to destroy their first batch of prohibited Iraqi arms under the new UN inspections regime, 10 leftover artillery shells filled with burning, disabling mustard gas.

Working with an Iraqi team, the UN specialists will take four or five days to eliminate the 155mm munitions at the al-Muthanna State Establishment, 70km northwest of Baghdad, Iraq's most important chemical weapons production facility in the 1980s.

The mustard-filled shells were inventoried by UN inspectors in the 1990s, but had not been destroyed by the time their monitoring program collapsed in 1998. The inspectors who returned to Iraq last November went to al-Muthanna within days to secure the weapons.
