Ukjraine should host the 2023 Eurovison Song Contest.

Ukraine won last night's Eurovision Song Contest. The winner usually hosts the next year's event but Ukraine has been invaded by Russia.

Ukraine's President has announced that, yes, Ukraine will be the host for 2023, but the event will be staged in Mariupol - mostly occupied by Russian Forces at present and the city is in ruins.

That will annoy Putin.

Is Ukraine's President an optimist, or do you think hosting the contest in Mariupol is possible?

Sanctions may not be lifted till all Russian troops are gone from all parts of Ukraine.
So there is a chance. Slim but a chance non the less.

Eurovission is the world's biggest music show 200 million plus viewers. The uk has always treated it like a bit of a joke. But the other European countries seem to take seriously.

I watched American Idol once. It was dumb. Not saying people can't sing but that doesn't make the show less dumb.

All the acts are professional and supposed to be the best each country can field as an entry. It is nothing like American Idol because everyone is professional.

And that doesn't include the many hours of semi-finals that reduce the number of acts.

The UK, as a founder member and financial sponsor, goes straight into the final, no matter how crap our entry is - in some years we got Nul points - nothing. This year Germany was last and the UK was second, an amazing showing for the UK after the previous seven years of rubbish.

Eurovision has the largest European audience for a music show.

ABBA were unknown outside their country before winning Eurovison.

Each country's entry is selected by their national jury (and public) voting so from start to finish the Eurovision song contest is probably more than 20 hours of TV in each country - it is big.

i think it's possible; i think Ukraine can see a positive in the announcement; i think Zel is trolling putin

not seen it in maybe 20 years, maybe 30!... it was dreadful. maybe one or 2 semi-decent songs. A lot of the time it was a case of reasonable singers given a song voted for by their country, and the songs were... abysmal. It was also a given when i was growing up to watch it, me and everyone i knew as well as most of England and millions euro-wide; the next day everyone could bitch about the results and terrible song and who got robbed of victory . Terry Wogan's commentary was smirk-worthy.

If you watched Eurovision, especially the semi-finals, you might be shaking your head at the talentless performers who are supposed to be 'the best' of each country. Maybe one could excuse Luxemburg or Malta which are small countries but even some large countries (particularly the UK) can end up with awful songs badly presented and you wonder how they were selected to represent their country.

In the UK, major artists tend to regard appearing on Eurovision as the kiss of death for their career so they avoid it, leaving the UK's contestants chosen from artists no one has ever heard of...
