U2 sold out, Bono is doing it for the glory and for a way to keep the band in the news. Simple.

Haha, you sound exactly like my Hump but even he was reeled in by their extraordinary performances back in 2001 during U2's Elevation Tour when we saw them twice in three nights. We liked them so much the first night that we bought nosebleed seats for their next show.

Bono walked that heart-shaped catwalk like he was GOD and yes, they sold out a long time ago. They're still an excellent waste of time and money as they really do put on a great show.

*sigh* I can't believe they perform "An Cat Dubh" during this current Vertigo tour. I would literally cream my panties while hearing that live.

Wasn’t there a president who was an actor before he acted in politics? Bob Dylan focused on politics in many songs, Natalie merchant, Tori Amos and so on.

To disregard an artist’s work because of their political stance is reactionary.

i like to think an artists work comes from somewhere ... i don't always agree with what musicians say when they're being political ... but i much prefer artists that do have "something" to say

I'm not disregarding anything they do based on their politics,
I was just pointing out there might be a bit of national pride on your end in not seeing they really haven't pushed the envelope in the rock genre....

which is fine, they are at a point where you know what to expect from them....

There are some Irish acts I can’t abide and I don’t really enjoy a lot of U2’s work but I have respect for them as a band and as individuals.

hate to bugger in, but what is wrong with revealing national pride while putting on an excellent show? if you think they are at a point where you know what to expect from them, then why bother paying the attention you do toward them? they got to where they are, draw masses and masses... so during the times of which they ramble on about their politics - why not hit the bathroom and let them air their thoughts behind that big, bad microphone....?

I think you misunderstood me. When I say nationalism I mean someone loves something from their country more so then if it weren't from their country. Like if I were American and I knew Bush were wrong and I backed him just because he was American. I just feel people have a natural tendency towards doing that.

Metrodance flat out told me it wasn't nationalism that drew her to defend U2. That's cool, I completely accept that. I was just asking her if it was nationalism that was coming from her (I knew she was Irish when she posted her intial comments).

Honestly, I could care less about their politics...not that I am against them, not that they even turn me off, I'm not real familiar with them nor do I care to be.
I was just saying when you go to a U2 show you know what to expect musically.

I said I haven't heard them push the envelope musically since Acthung Baby. I still love that album, but everything since has sounded totally so-so to me.
I just appreciate artists that push things forward, push the envelope and U2 stopped doing that years ago. Politics has nothing to do with how I view U2.

What's dull is self-important celebrities who believe that people who like their music, read their books, and see their movies will actually listen to and take them seriously when they spew their wingnut politics. They've decided that their status as entertainers makes them experts in matters they know little about. Some of the most vocal among them (on the left and the right) are poorly informed, naive, and not particularly well-educated.
