Update: Obama Campaign Asked Bundlers To Raise Money For Super PAC On Same Day Obama Denounced Them…

The hypocrisy on this one continues to grow.

Washington (CNN) – According to several participants on a conference call with major bundlers late Monday night, Barack Obama’s re-election campaign encouraged donors to fundraise for a Democratic super PAC supporting the president, marking an about-face on Obama’s position toward outside spending groups.

Obama has been an outspoken critic of current campaign financing laws, in particular a Supreme Court ruling that allowed the creation of super PACs. Until now he has kept his distance from the group, Priorities USA Action.

But in the wake of the group’s anemic fundraising, made public last week, the campaign changed its position. Earlier Monday, it announced to members of its national finance committee that it will use administration and campaign officials as surrogates at PAC events.

On the call, a campaign official made clear that after donors contribute the maximum amount allowed to the Obama campaign, fundraisers should encourage donors to give to Priorities USA, according to a source who was on the call.

Yesterday: Obama Says He “Worries” About Influence of Super PACs – Today: Obama Gives His Blessing To Super PAC Working To Reelect Him…

What a difference 24 hours makes.

Today:

(WaPo) — Fearing a tide of spending by outside conservative groups, President Obama is giving his blessing to a pro-Democratic Party “super PAC” that will work to help his reelection, his campaign said late Monday.

Obama campaign manager Jim Messina said in a message to supporters that “our campaign has to face the reality of the law as it stands,” which he said gives a large financial advantage to Republicans and their allied groups. Messina said Obama will throw his support to Priorities USA Action, a super PAC founded by two former White House aides that until now has been unable to match its conservative competitors in fundraising.

“We can’t allow for two sets of rules in this election whereby the Republican nominee is the beneficiary of unlimited spending and Democrats unilaterally disarm,” Messina wrote.

The move marks a clear political risk for Obama, who has staked much of his political career on opposition to the outsized role of “secret billionaires” and other monied interests while also attempting to win reelection in a struggling economy.

Yesterday:

(Politico) — President Barack Obama didn’t disavow his big-money fundraising machine, but did voice dismay about the presence of super PACs and negative campaigning in an interview that aired Monday morning.

“One of the worries we have obviously in the next campaign is that there are so many of these so-called super PACs, these independent expenditures that are gonna be out there, there is gonna be just a lot of money floating around and I guarantee a bunch of it’s gonna be negative,” Obama told NBC’s Matt Lauer in an interview taped before the Super Bowl on Sunday.

“It’s not gonna be enough to say, ‘the other guy is a bum.’ You’ve got to explain to the people what your plan is to make sure that there are good jobs at good wages and that this economy is growing over the long term. And whoever wins that argument I think is gonna be the next president,” he said.

Carney: Anti-Super PAC Voters Will Still Support Obama After His Flip-Flop…

Of course they will, they’re brain dead NIGGER PROTECTORS

Its good to be NIGGER

“The president’s views of the influence of the Citizens United case haven’t changed,” White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said during today’s press briefing. “He expressed them a few days ago and will continue to express them.”

“The campaign has made clear that they cannot engage in this campaign, they cannot compete effectively, if they play by two sets of rules,” Carney said. He also noted the importance of superPACs in the Republican primary, as he suggested that Republicans are more enthusiastic about having their superPACs than Obama is about his. “I think that distinction will be clear to voters who care about this issue,” Carney said

Axelrod: Obama will 'continue to fight' superPACs

byJoel Gehrke Commentary Staff Writer

President Obama's top campaign strategist said that Obama "will continue to fight" to eliminate superPACs after the presidential campaign, but needs superPACs for now to combat Republicans.

"The president is going to continue to fight for ways to reform this system, in the future, but that's not going to happen in this campaign," David Axelrod said today on Morning Joe, "and we have to live in the world as it is, not as we want it to be."

Axelrod explained the campaign thinking behind the move. "We see Karl Rove, the Koch brothers, and others, talking about raising collectively upwards of half a billion dollars to try and defeat the president and we were faced with a situation as to whether we could afford to play by two sets of rules, and the answer is obviously 'no'," he explained. "But that doesnt mean that we believe that this is the best way for the system to function."

Another Day, Another Obama Flip-Flop: Lobbyist Among Top Campaign Fundraisers Despite Longstanding Pledge…

Via Politico:

Despite a longstanding promise not to accept political contributions from lobbyists or special interests, one of President Obama’s top fundraisers is a registered airline lobbyist.

Former Florida Rep. Ron Klein, now working as a partner for the law firm Holland & Knight, has raised between $200,000 and $500,000 for the Obama campaign, while lobbying on behalf of Spirit Airlines, according to public records. The news was first reported by the Washington Free Beacon, a new conservative website run by Center for American Freedom.

The promise not to accept lobbyist donations is nothing more than a self-imposed ban by the campaign — campaign finance laws allow lobbyists to donate and solicit funds for political campaigns. And the Obama campaign is under no legal obligation to release its list of bundlers.

Still, it’s a big lapse for a campaign and an administration that prides itself on transparency, openness and freedom from special interests. The New York Times also reported earlier this week that the relatives of a Mexican fugitive were top Obama campaign bundlers, forcing the campaign to refund over $200,000 in donations. And the Klein revelation comes one day after another big campaign finance reversal by the Obama administration in deciding to accept help from an outside super PAC, in what PolitiFact’s Truth-O-Meter called “a full flop” from the president’s earlier position.

Flashback 2007: Obama Says You Can’t Change Your Mind On Outside Groups Spending Money On Elections…

He had to know this quote would surface after yesterday’s Super PAC flip-flop.

Via Beltway Confidential:

In 2008, no candidate was a bigger opponent of political action committees during the Democratic primary than Barack Obama.

While stumping in Iowa in 2007, Obama criticized his opponent John Edwards for changing his mind on 527 political action groups by allowing a former campaign manager to run a 527 on his behalf.

“You can’t say yesterday that you don’t believe in them and then today, have three-quarters of a million dollars being spent for you,” Obama said incredulously.

DNC Chief Wasserman Schultz Joins Obama In Political Gymnastics, Backs His Flip-Flop On Super PACs…

She was also against them before she was for them.

Via Mediaite:

DNC chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz visited CNN’s Starting Point to address criticism that President Barack Obama has “flip-flopped” on the issue of Super PACs.

“Isn’t there something contradictory in that, though?” asked host Soledad O’Brien, “Saying ‘I’m against it, but embrace it because the other guys are embracing it.’”

“Well, because we can’t operate in a situation where we have only the resources we can raise in our campaign by very limited campaign finance rules,” said Wasserman Schultz, “and the Republicans will have several hundred million dollars in Super PAC money that will be dumped on President Obama in the general election. So, the rules as they exist now are the rules we will play by, but when it comes to the future and if the Republicans would step up right now, pass a disclose act, apply those new transparency rules and get rid of Super PACs to the election right now — which we would love to see — we welcome them and urge them to do that.”

Pelosi: Obama Flip-Flopped On Super PACs Because He Didn’t Want The “Koch Brothers Deciding The Presidency”…

She’d rather have George Soros do it.

“The President made a decision, which I think was a wise one that he was not going to unilaterally disarm and leave the field to the Koch Brothers to decide who would be President of the United States and to control the congress. And his commitment was full disclosure…”
