"BAGHDAD, Iraq, April 7 — U.S. forces swept into the heart of Baghdad and seized one of Saddam Hussein’s presidential palaces on Monday, for the first time establishing at least a temporary foothold inside the city. The operation came as Iraqi forces put up stiff resistance on the outskirts of the city, killing at least eight American troops. The fighting also inundated Baghdad’s hospitals with dead and injured Iraqis."
