It's not that he doesn't believe what he says, it's that he has to carry water for his team no matter what...and he will endorse, enable and promulgate whatever revisionist history fed to him that attempts to scrub away the verity of America's past that he (as well as his team) can't and won't deal with.Most of the Dixiecrats you're referring to had either retired or were defeated for re-election by the mid-70s. And nearly all of them were replaced by Republicans.
True if you were writing this in 1875 or so. The thing is, once Reconstruction was over (which the Republicans agreed to in order to win a disputed presidential election), the best thing you could say about them with respect to civil rights was that they were a bit less overtly hostile to the cause than the Southern Democrats were. That's not commitment, it's indifference.
So, in other words, the Democrats were racist against Blacks, now they're racist against whites, and the event that triggered the switch is a myth. Once again I can only assume you don't even really believe most of what you say here.
