Apparently it's a tradition to "raffle off" the first kiss. Meaning who gets to leave the ship first and kiss their loved one while everyone is watching and applauding. It just so happened that this woman aboard ship--her partner (who is also in the navy) was the winner. And so they got to engage in the first kiss

Indeed it is. It's also progress that they're in their early 20's, are both Petty Officers, both operate on-board weapons systems (not on the same vessel) and they met in training school and no longer have to hide their relationship.

Baby steps are preferable to no steps at all. There is still a considerable amount of prejudice against Gays that needs to be overcome and some will never accept the lifestyle, but that is to be expected. For the military to do it's part in overcoming prejudice against Gays is a positive step forward IMO.

Presentation is everything. That photo would have been unthinkable even five years ago.
