Two questions on comments

I mean, in the comments on their own stories. The fingers of one hand are enough to count the number of times I've seen authors in conversation with their reader )
(I always look through the comments of stories I like)

That's because we can't reply directly to the people. I quit doing that when I realized it was artificially padding my number of comments.

I respond to all messages sent with an email address attached via the "contact member" option.
Another thing I never considered as a reader, before I began writing and posting my own stories here, was that you can send email messages to authors. There is potentially a LOT of communication going on there, that nobody else will ever see. Since I began writing here 5 years ago, I have sent and received something like 7,000 emails.

I've done that a few times, but not often. I usually do not. One, I don't like the idea of padding my comment stats. Two, I have no way of knowing if the person who commented will even see my reply. They won't get a notice that I replied. Three, there are better ways of communicating with a commenter. If they left their name, I can send them a message privately. I have done that, and I have received such messages as well from authors whose stories I've commented on.

I have used this method, but have never gotten a answer. Judging by how many times you've had to do it, I should wait a couple years )

While I generally don't reply to comments unless I feel there's some clarification to be made that may help other readers. I understand why some do, and don't have a problem with it.

I have also sent the occasional email to a commenter, either to thank them for a particularly well thought out comment, or to answer a question they may have had or clarify something they may have missed.

But I really don't have the time to reply to each reader personally, as much as I'd like that.

I do try to show my appreciation for them where I can though.

If you don't provide a return email address, there is no way for the author to send a reply. Also, you might check your spam folder. Sometimes I find emails have gotten sent there for no apparent reason.

Okay then, maybe it's just me or my stories.

I published my entry the same day yours came out, listed right after yours on the category page. Engagement was way down for mine and I just assumed that this one didn't do for anybody.

FWIW, I liked yours better.

Thank you.

The reason I even asked this was of the cutoff date being at the time of the last update on the story side and the sudden chop off of all comments. With over 300 stories there is usually someone finding something to bitch about or asking for another chapter on a one shot story.

Why are authors so concerned about comments, but hardly show up there themselves, like they don't care? )
Some of us hardly read here to begin with. But I have done my due dilligence and read a few stories, made a few comments... and votes.

I got two comments last night. Huzzah! Or night before. On my new story. I appreciate them, but one has figured out the twist in the story and maybe it's obvious, but it's kinda bothering me, I feel like he's spoiling it, when I [think] Intended it to not be easily noticed. I just wanna tell him "Shhhhh!"

I noticed my last download of stats a couple of days ago saw a sweep - lost 9 votes.

Have noticed a decline in votes, too over the last month - decline in readership as well. Used to seeing between 10 - 15 votes lately its 3 - 5 this month.
