The perceived dangers of a free and unfettered Twitter have been summed up with some of the following:
  • Individuals are targeted for online harassment on platforms like Twitter simply because they are women or members of a minority group (racialized, gender non-conforming, disabled or otherwise marginalized). The topics people post about matter less than their identities in predicting the intensity of online harassment people are subjected to.
  • Men who experience online harassment, often experience a different type of harassment than women or marginalized people. Women, for example, tend to experience more sexualized harassment, such as rape threats.
  • When people experience harassment, they seek support from their organizations, social media platforms and law enforcement, but often find the support they receive is insufficient.
  • When people do not receive adequate support from their organizations, social media platforms and law enforcement, they adopt strategies to protect themselves, including withdrawing from social media.https://theconversation.com/if-elon-musk-succeeds-in-his-twitter-takeover-it-would-restrict-rather-than-promote-free-speech-181576
If this was true then why are you snowflake liberals still here on Lit where there are no such protections? People call other people all sorts of names on here and yet, everyone manages to survive and post the next day.

The whole harassment thing is a straw dog used to justify censorship of political ideas that Twitter just didn't like. The left knows that they cannot compete in the marketplace of ideas, so they seek to ban those they don't like. This new openness will be good for them in the long run. It will force them to either come up with cogent and rational rhetoric without dependence upon rhetorical crutches like screaming "RACISM" when obviously none exists or ignoring scientific evidence that they dont like, or to diminish into every more ignored caterwauling.

No mass social media platform is able to be completely free of moderation. This isn't about the owners of the platform, but rather the behavior of the users. Ignoring wreckless behavior brings about other liabilities.

Those who think this a liberal thing clearly don't recognize the problems nor the solutions.

Musk isn't here to cater to either liberals nor conservatives. Sorry.

All in all, a few people may be reinstated, but there won't be any drastic difference.

Musk's honeymoon with the right wing will be short lived once they don't get what they want out of the deal

So why is Lit immune to those liabilities? Why are those "problems" not an issue here?

If you think there arent going to be huge differences you are in a very small minority. (But time will tell)

Of he fails to open up Twitter like he has promised then you will be right, but I think he's going to do exactly what he has promised. For all sorts of reasons.

They aren't immune to those liabilities. But their userbase is much much much smaller and easier to moderate.

I can't help that idiots expect Musk to clean house. He has no reason to. His real passions are in much grander things.....he wants to leave a legacy for his narcissism....nobody will remember Twitter decades from now.

Where is that moderation? You call any number of people names on here, the very kinds of things that Twitter so proudly bans, what are the consequences? I see none at all.
So if Must isnt going to change anything... why are the employees so apoplexic?

I believe the real apoplexy by the left and especially the employees is not based on a fear of people (who agree with them politically anyway) being "marginalized" but rather they fear revelation of the hidden and unpublished algorithms employed to censor perfectly allowable (under their stated guidelines) speech that they just didnt want being shared. And it IS going to come out.

Stop being a butthead and read the superior intellect being showcased in post number one and rebut his "point" if you can.

Why would I rebut a list they literally made up?

I don't have any issue with Twitter...and you admitted openly that you don't actually use it because of the libz.

The OP point seems to be that Musk will fix all their lib grievances and make libs cry...I don't believe Musk will do anything of the sort and certainly the amount of libs crying doesn't matter to me

Go visit the unmoderated parts of Lit, count the number of women you see, and then get back to us.

"Marketplace of ideas": is that now what we're calling the insistence that horse dewormer cures Covid?

It's very dumb. We're gonna see a lot more of this kind of nonsense too.

Trump lost. Lol

Elon Musk has made star gazing impossible. Now we have these bright fucking daisy chains crossing the sky making 80% of the stars unvisable. And people think he will save Twitter? This is all about a 17yr old kid tracking his jet and reporting it on twitter.

Why do you think they demanded first (well first was censorship by banning, so there is that,
the Twitter strategy
) a politics board and then the creation of the lounge.

Now they have peace of mind on the GB (dirty pics & UncleBill), in the personals, on the playground...,

Now we up and took Twitter away from them? at the same time that CNN+ went bust?
Its just too much to take in one week. There will be new bannings!

:(

You turned that into a contradiction.
A Fascist traitor would spread defamatory Fascist disinformation.

It would seem that it really triggered the real Fascist to an angry response.

I have the algorithm for stopping on-line harassment and bullying:

Turn off the computer!

You're welcome.

Thankfully all the fucking morons who don't know how to remove their faces from the phones and don't understand how to block or mute, have signalled their exodus from the platform.

If Musk does anything at all, I'd prefer he target the "mike6763947263947262" users that created their account yesterday, started following Michael Flynn or Rick Wilson, and have over 3000 tweets and retweets already.

Twitter is fucking dumb. People all in a twist over something on the internet they can easily avoid or ignore.
Never made a tweet in my life and somehow I manage to carry on.

Musk has not said that moderation will be discontinued. He’s made it clear it will continue. What he’s indicated will change is there will be greater transparency in how it is applied, and much less restrictive. For example, here is a tweet he made yesterday in reference to Twitter’s ridiculous suspension of the NY Post and suppression of its Hunter Biden laptop story.

Calling the NY Post a “major news organization” is incredibly inappropriate.

This doesn't sound like it's going to remain the same:

“My strong intuitive sense is that having a public platform that is maximally trusted and broadly inclusive is extremely important to the future of civilization,” “I don’t care about the economics at all.” “If in doubt, let the speech — let it exist,” said Musk. “If it’s a grey area, I would say, let the tweet exist.” “But in a case where there’s perhaps a lot of controversy, you would not necessarily want to promote that tweet.” “I’m not saying I have all the answers here..." “But I do think that we want to be very reluctant to delete things, and just be very cautious with permanent bans. Timeouts, I think, are better than permanent bans.” “A good sign as to whether there’s free speech is, is someone you don’t like allowed to say something you don’t like? If that is the case then we have free speech.” “And it’s damn annoying, when someone you don’t like says something you don’t like. That is a sign of a healthy, functioning, free speech situation.”
