I just got myself a new TV (no big deal, you might think - and I suppose it isn't, but work with me here...), and I'm having a bit of trouble getting the picture to look just right. I remember reading somewhere (can't remember where or when) that you could use the movie 'The Fifth Element' to assist in tuning in the picture (pausing the DVD at certain spots and changing your tuning till it looks right).

Would anyone know anything more about this? Perhaps a link to the procedure?

Thanks in advance...

If your brand new TV doesn't "look right" when playing a DVD, you probably need to look into collecting on the warranty -- The factory defaults should display the incoming signal exactly as it is intended to be displayed.

It's possible that your DVD player is at fault -- sending a signl that mangles the colors and brightness -- and your new TV is displaying exactly what the DVD is telling it to.

TV colors do vary from model to model, often a function of the picture tube phosphers. The best way to tune is find a scene with a lot of skin and make it look good. Get the flesh tones right and all falls into place.

I think I may have mis-spoken (or not really said what I meant) - there was nothing truly wrong with the TV - what I wanted was to adjust it so it 'looked right' to ME - setting personal options, in a way. I personally find the factory defaults just a little too bright.

Of course, the fact that it IS new also plays a part :D

My newest TV (about a year old now) has three factory settings plus a customizable user setting -- Movies, Sports, Multi-media, and Personal -- and I've found that the "sports" setting is best for "too bright" programs. Look for "auto picture" or similar setings in your setup menu.

The best way to set the personal setting is to adjust it each time the picture isn't "just right" for your personal tastes in small increments until you find that you don't need to adjust it very often.
