I remember reading a 4 part series i think. Its a earth like world with slavery. This naive guy moves to new town for a new job that his uncle sent him down for (south africa like feel) where he inherits the old guys house and slave. he is reluctant master, but gets involved in the social norm where when some one in debt declare bankruptcy and become slave to the person they owe. or somehting like that.
the story also involves a colleague who is a bitch to her secretary, both become his slaves later. and another slave he buys from somebody else.
