Former President Trump’s campaign and the Republican National Committee (RNC) are suing Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) over her voter registration efforts in the state.

The campaign and the RNC are taking issue with Whitmer’s directive that authorized Small Business Administration (SBA) and Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) sites to be used for voter registration efforts. In the complaint filed Monday, they argue Whitmer lacks the authority to designate those federal offices as “voter registration agencies,” or VRAs.


The complaint argues that only the state Legislature has the authority to designate those offices as “voter registration agencies.”

“The RNC and its members are concerned that Defendants’ failure to comply with Michigan statutes governing VRA designation undermines the integrity of elections by increasing the opportunity for individuals to register to vote...."

I have not heard of any difficulties with registering to vote here, but my registration was quite a long time ago. If some cities are so broke or poorly managed that city clerk offices are unable to handle voter registration, that would explain a state push to find alternatives.

That isn't the issue. No state can co-opt federal offices for state business. Also the governor has to act within the parameters as set forth by the state legislature.

The National Voting Rights Act, signed into law waaaaay back in 1993, SPECIFICALLY ALLOWS FEDERAL AGENCIES TO WORK IN TANDEM WITH STATE AGENCIES FOR THE PURPOSE OF REGISTERING VOTERS IN THAT STATE.

Here's the relevant verbiage from the United States Code

(b)Federal Government and private sector cooperation
All departments, agencies, and other entities of the executive branch of the Federal Government shall, to the greatest extent practicable, cooperate with the States in carrying out subsection (a), and all nongovernmental entities are encouraged to do so.

And here is a link to the U.S.C. 20506 section 7 if you want to read it for yourself.

It's also worth noting that President Joe Biden issued an Executive Order ("Voting EO") on March 7, 2021 reminding all federal agencies of their obligation under the law. The states of Arkansas, California, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Louisiana, New Mexico and North Carolina have opted to codify this permanently under state statute.
