'Pure chaos': Trump's alterations leave millions of rural Americans stranded

Millions of Americans who have waited decades for fast internet connections will keep waiting after the Trump administration threw a $42 billion high-speed internet program into disarray.

The Commerce Department, which runs the massive Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment Program, announced new rules in early June requiring states — some of which were ready to begin construction later this year — to solicit new bids from internet service providers.

The Biden-era program, known as BEAD, was hailed when created in 2021 as a national plan to bring fast internet to all, including millions in remote rural areas.

A yearlong KFF Health News investigation, with partner Gray Media’s InvestigateTV, found nearly 3 million people live in mostly rural counties that lack broadband as well as primary care and behavioral health care providers. In those same places, the analysis found, people live sicker and die earlier on average.

The program adopts a technology-neutral approach to “guarantee that American taxpayers obtain the greatest return on their broadband investment,” according to the June policy notice. The program previously prioritized the use of fiber-optic cable lines, but broadband experts like Ali said the new focus will make it easier for satellite-internet providers such as Elon Musk’s Starlink and Amazon’s Kuiper to win federal funds.
^^and there you have it

Yes, there we have it, NO MORE FUCKING SUBSIDIES TO MAJOR CORPORATIONS!

🙄

Derpy derped…again…

😑

DonOld & the MAGAt republicans directly doing a yuuuuuge favor for “Leon”, after “Leon” basically bought them the 2024 election, is the very definition of crony capitalism.

Hope that ^ helps.

👍

👉 Derpy 🤣

We. Told. Them. So.

Nearly all rural people are MAGA cult members. Fuck them. I hope they never have internet.

Musk’s new grift is too late. During the Biden administration, the electric utilities in rural counties in our region all built fiber optic internet systems. Gig speeds at low rates for everyone. 👍

Some good news for rural communities.

Failed $42B Biden-era wireless internet access program restructured

Changes are a win in line with North Carolina congressman's SPEED for BEAD Act proposal

Not a single shovel went into the ground from the Biden administration’s $42 billion high-speed broadband Internet access program, a new report says, and key congressmen from North Carolina and Kentucky are praising the changes closing the digital divide.

New guidelines have been released by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, unlocking a stalled effort for fast, reliable broadband to homes across the country. The $42.45 billion Broadband Equity, Access and Deployment Program was thought to do that in all 50 states, five territories and the District of Columbia.

As I demonstrated above, fiber internet systems have been completed in rural areas in recent years. And one of the examples I provided is from North Carolina. The congressman should look into it.

Pretending that “not a single shovel went into the ground” is weird.

Nobody said no fiber has been laid in rural areas. The article refers to Biden’s $42 billion broadband program that never accomplished anything.

The ones I highlighted received federal grants to help pay for their systems. It says so right there on their website.

Great. Nobody said anything differently. The article refers to Biden’s $42 billion “Broadband Equity, and Access” program which was passed under the Infrastructure and Jobs Act in 2021. They never laid a foot of cable under that program but thanks to Congress members from Virginia and Kentucky and the new administration, the bureaucratic and regulatory road blocks are being cleared. 👍

As soon as decisions like that are made, technology makes the science obsolete. :)

some areas have received it, some are in the process of being connected, and others as yet remain to be connected. The first few years were about getting things in place so ground could be broken. I've seen plenty of excited chatter online from rural folks seeing work being done and getting signed up for their service.

trump mobile is probably starlink based and the trump phone a Chinese iPhone knockoff.

A phone company around here tried running new lines adjacent to the phone lines but mice got in the boxes and farmers kept knocking the boxes over. Not sure where they got the bucks to do it. :)

Hard to feel sorry for their ignorant asses.

Do they really think some spoiled billionaire would give a shit about them?

What? They thought he would only harm the people they detest?

not all rural people are republican, let alone trumpers

the noisy ones? sure

The operative phrase is "waited decades" while a shit load of "consultants" and "planners" lined their pockets while nothing was achieved. That whole shell game was the electronic frontier equivalent of California's "High Speed Rail."

BabyBoobs is a gaslighting fuckwit.

Yes, there WAS a fuckton of “measure twice - cut once”, but that was by design to avoid corruption and overlap of coverage areas that already have broadband access.

Of course, BabyBoobs prefers the Musk method of “don’t measure at all - cut a thousand times - then go back and tape back together those places where Musk shouldn’t have cut” (and of course we can’t forget the grift involved with DonOld pausing funding for some of these projects so Musk can shoehorn “Starlink” into the space currently occupied by TRUE broadband providers…)

DOGE!!!
