Trucks & Trucks

It's been my plan for a long time to travel the US and visit as many state and national parks as I can, along with various other stops. I love traveling, I was lucky enough to be able to buy a 2020 Tacoma Off Road during the pandemic. I ultimately used it for work for a little while until I was able to start converting it to my ideal truck.

Couple of them. Ford F-250 diesel and Toyota Tundra. Both 4x4

I thought about getting a Tundra when I bought the taco in 2020 but decided it was a little too much truck. The Tacoma has done everything I've asked of it, even if it's slightly under powered. As I just casually bolt on an extra 800lbs of steel 🤣

Theres 2 things in this world im not going to do without. A pick up truck and a tractor. Oh yea and my swiss army knife. So 3.
Ok so you look at my profile and think this guys in to that? In my normal life im a mans man. Its just in the bedroom I drop my inhibitions and man hood at the door. Dont judge me.
However im leaning towards buying a newer truck. At least 3/4 ton. Any suggestions? Years ago I had a F250 4x4 but it had that 6.0 that was notorious for having severe issues.

Why at least 3/4 ton? what are your plans for it?

i want to be able to haul my tractor down the road with no issues and safely. Its a 35 hp tractor with loader. Or maybe even a decent size camper. I have an F150 now

The biggest thing you have to worry about these days is model years. The 2024 GMs are pretty good. If you're only doing some light towing then a Tundra is always good, though they have had engine issues lately. If you're just light towing and mostly daily driving I would avoid diesel as the long term maintenance doesn't really make any sense unless you're regularly towing heavy and doing work.

Current Fords ALL have horrible quality control from what I've seen. It's a crap shoot.
IMO rams are garbage but that's just a personal opinion.

GM or a Tundra would be my recommendation, but make sure you do plenty of research.

Thanks!! Yea ive been leaning towards GMC. I like the looks and I see a lot of them out there. I agree, im not leaning towards a Diesel. They just dont make them as reliable because of all the green pollution BS. But yea I used to be a FORD guy. Not any more. Wish I had my Dads old 1950 ford. That was a cool truck to drive!! We called it Fathers Finest Flatbed Flat head Fifty Ford.

I think it's less about green vehicle initiatives and the fact that modern vehicles have so many electronics in them these days that unless they take their time to actually BUILD a vehicle you're going to end up with issues somewhere. With everything being so finely tuned and controlled by electronics something is always bound to go wrong. Until the technology really catches up I think it's going to be that way for a while.

It is kind of hard to do QA on MILES of cabling buried in a vehicle once it's put together.

I’m gonna throw my hat in here. I drive a ‘21 GMC 2500 long bed, crew cab diesel. It’s the love of my life. She does not complain about any load, either in the bed or towed. I do all my own maintenance.
However, if Toyota made a diesel I’d totally be down. I loved my 2006 tundra.

I only started doing some of my own maintenance last year. I'm only able to change the oil myself now that it has the 2.5 inch lift on it 🤣 still a tight squeeze after getting the front skid plate off.

That skid plate is a bitch 😂😊

No kidding, I had to borrow the fire station's air impact gun to get the bolts off. Thankfully my old chief let me use all the tools in our maintenance room 😅
Fire guys tend to be either a) way over reactive or b) chill af. There’s really no in between.

Anyone else on Lit have a truck they love and take it to cool places? Haul fun toys? Do you spent time browsing all the parts you wish you could buy?

I have a '19 Tundra. It took some time, but I used my friend's rig (another Toyota) as an example and built my own rack. I found a great deal on a tent and have been slowly putting it all together. My wife and I actually took a trip to the Grand Canyon last year and had an amazing time.

The tundra really is an amazing truck. It’ll run forever if you take care of it!

My tent is probably the last thing I'm going to buy. I have my eye on a nice hard shell by I camper.
Those are nice. I built a crane of sorts using two harbor freight badlands winches to help me remove and mount the entire rack. My truck is primarily a work truck but a 30 min job and it's set up for camping and overlanding.
