Katie Lewis held the phone receiver tightly she was sure her knuckles were turning white. Two guards were standing near her as they waited for her to finish her one and only phone call. Her foot impatiently tapped at the wall as phone rang on the other end. She knew 2 phone numbers by heart and while the one she didn't dare call as they had a big fight the last time about her job and the danger she always seemed to put herself in.
"The next time Katie, I won't be there... so don't call me when you land your ass in jail again!"
And that was it. Those were the last words spoken between them. That was over a month ago and although it hurt her a lot that he walked out on her, Katie knew it was her fault. She should have gone after him and apologized. Should have told him she was sorry. It wouldn't happen again.
They both would know that was going to be a lie.
And right now, it happened...again.
Was she calling him now? No. She was calling her best friend, Jennifer. All Katie had to do was post bail. That was it. Then she'd be out of here... right?
Just as she was about to give up, the other line clicked and Jen answered sleepily. Oh crap... it was--she looked around frantically for a clock.
Goddamnit. The clock there said it was a little after 11pm so that put Jen 3 hours ahead... after 2am. With everything she hadn't considered the time difference between where she was at in
"Hey Jen--" Katie started but Jen cut her off realizing what time it was and who was on the other line...
"Fuck Katie... what happened now?"
****
It took some fast convincing to tell Jen what had happened to Katie just that night and of course, Jen cursed her out big time but she would Katie this one favor... this last time.
She seemed to be using up her favors... what would happen next time?
In the end, she asked... well, no, she begged Jen not to tell Cade about what happened to her now. But she knew that was useless as Jen and Cade were cousins and she knew she would let it slip that Katie was in trouble. Again.

A guard grabbed Katie's arm and yanked her from the phone and took her roughly back to her cell. It was temporary they said. She would talk to the judge in the morning and the money she had Jen send her would hopefully cover her bail... hopefully. It wasn't much as she was running out of it quickly.
Life as a private detective was very expensive.
They had told her that hopefully the judge would be in a good mood and would let her bail out in the morning.
Katie knew she was in trouble and couldn't sleep because of it. The jail was noisy, not that she thought it would be quiet and everyone would abide by a bedtime. No, there were moaning's and cries and of course, yelling. That was fine. It gave her a reason not to sleep as she didn't trust the guards and the way they looked at her.
How had she ended up here? She laughed to herself as she thought of a movie, which she couldn't remember the name of, where it started with a record scratch and a guy saying 'You're probably wondering how I ended up in this situation...'... it was almost funny but she didn't laugh...
She had just landed in San Diego that morning and was on a mission. A mother had come to her telling her her daughter was taken by a man... someone she owed money to and they were using her 18 year old daughter to pay off her debt. Katie's only job was to find out who the people were and to get the girl back.
That was it. But, the further she dug, the more shit she had come across. She knew she was getting in over her head when she had decided to sneak into that warehouse to see what she could find. Katie has been so focused that she got sloppy and set off a silent alarm which in turn, alerted the cops.
She knew that if the cops hadn't been there, she would have been taken care of in a different way.
Later, with a jerk, Katie woke up to the sound of her cell door opening. She rubbed the sleep from her face and looked up at the guard, "Detectives want to talk to you again."
"Wait... what?" She said as she was handcuffed in the cell before being led to an interrogation room and roughly pushed to the seat by the guard. There were two men in there, both didn't really look like detectives but again, who was she to judge? She didn't look like a P.I. but here she was. Both parties stared at each other for a moment before one of the asked, "What were you doing in one of Alec Santiago's warehouses?"
Katie didn't say anything at first and then just shrugged, "I told you earlier I'm not talking until I have a lawyer. I know my rights."
She was pushing it and didn't questioning like this took place this early... 5AM early, she had a quick glance at a clock in the hall on her way to the room.
One man to the left stood up, "ANSWER THE QUESTION!!"
