Trom's Weekly Video Game Review Thread

I play Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas on my PC everyday. I let my 5 year old sit on my lap and I have to keep telling him while I'm gunning down bad guys that it's all make believe and that if he ever does for real what I did in the game, I'd take away his Transformers. lol

I also played the demo for a game called Overlord which was pretty fun. You play this guy who's dug up by these creatures to become the next evil ruler of the world. You get to control these impish minions and send them out to fight, destroy and bring back loot to their 'master'.

40% more calories as compared to what? Sitting on the couch and reading comic books? Or going to work? Or studying? Or working out at a gym?

eta: And of course you would be burning calories. Your body burns calories constantly just to be alive, left alone concentrating on the screen, moving fingers, etc.

Actually with the Wii you aren't just moving your fingers, you have to use your arms depending on the game. Like there's a sword fighting game where you have to move your sword arm as if you were swinging the sword itself which is wicked cool, though I couldn't do it. What I'm looking forward to is Mario Party 8.:D

Ok, so I'm getting REALLY frustrated at Feebass right now!:eek:
I still haven't even seen one.

I've got four of the Eevee-lutions now, just gotta hatch my last egg and evolve it into a Flareon. :D

Eevee eggs seem to take the longest out of any pokemon to hatch...I know how frustrating that is...Oh, and there's now both a Grass and Ice Evolution for Eevee with Diamond/Pearl...

Oh, and Feebass are only available in 6 squares on route 119 (right next to the tree-top village in Ruby/Saphire...So you have to surf and fish and literally canvas the entire river one square at a time...Although apparently once you hit the right squares the chance of finding one is about 60-80%...The guide I read suggested making sure to get a couple, including at least one female for breeding...

I also picked up Ranger yesterday on sale :D

DL: I finally got a Feebass!
Actually I caught a couple, I made sure I caught at least one female so I can breed them...and I also remember the spot I found them at so I can pick up more...:D
Already evolved one into a Milotic too...now just waiting for my stupid Palmtre plant to bear fruits...60 hours for that...Grr!

Okay, so it's obvious that Tromby is busy with other things right now, and I decided to bring his thread back to life. I apologize for the death of this thread, so hopefully I can make it up with a brand-spanking new Game Review on the game below:

Can anybody guess it? yep... It's deffinately what you think it is...
Super Mario Bros. 3.
So why am I reviewing it, you ask? Well.. When you been living with 2 nerdy boys for about 2 weeks now, and all they have been playing is that game, it's kind of stuck in your head, and it refreshes old school memories.

Super Mario Brothers 3 (スーパーマリオブラザーズ3, Sūpā Mario Burazāzu Surī)
Nintendo
February 12, 1990 ( North American release)
Super Mario All-Stars (aka Super Mario Collection) 1993 ( released for the SNES)

Super Mario Bros 2 is my favorite game of the series and the original SMB is a legend. So where does this leave Super Mario Bros 3? This was the last Super Mario game on the old NES and while I might like some of the other games more, this might be the class of the series on the NES. With the strange direction that SMB2 went, this was a trip back to the roots of Mario. This is a true side- scrolling game and features many of the same enemies from the original( and then some, the most amusing to me would be the mini-Koopas that hide under the blocks in world 2). You still jump, stomp and throw fire to make your way through the game. But there are new features now.

First, there is now a world map and you can select which level you want to enter next. Some levels are avoidable, some are not, but you can also do special areas (several mini-games and an area where you get bonus items). You are able to get items throughout the game, and you can use them before levels to be stronger. There are also several different suits that enhance your abilities. The most common is the Racoon suit which allows you to kill the enemies by flicking(?)-( if that's what you want to call it, Or as chronicle_tenko calls it "flappy") your tail at them, and also giving you the ability to fly for short periods of time.

There is also a frog suit (allowing swimming to be easier, also you can kick-ass by leaping like a little froggy), a Tanooki suit (much like the raccoon suit, but you can briefly turn to stone- or is a armor-clad guy? to avoid enemies... super awesome!), and I believe there is a Hammer Brothers Suit as well, along side all the mini games like the match up of cards, the match-up game with the enlarged Mushroom, Star and Fire Flower, and then the little Mushroom huts where Toadstool or whatever his name is waiting for you to pick a box... any box...

The best was those musical notes as well, that lead you off to unknown places to collect coins or flutes, which reminds me. The awesome part of SMB 3 was those flutes that let you skip from level one to get to level 3, and from there- to levels 4,5,6,7 and 8.
However SMB 3 had it's faults too. The game is terribly easy, and can be beaten by probably by a three-year old. The backgrounds were enough to make you think you lived in a trippy dream, and it is terribly, terribly addicting. However, before I forget, I forgot to mention the best damn thing of the whole game. The green boot ( or as Davalicious calls it, the shoe.) now, the shoe makes you nearly invincible! You can stomp on enemies, walk on clams, diminish fireballs and kill those stupid vines that pop out of the sewers. What more can you ask for?
(Based on it's prime hay day to now)

Graphics: 85 (now- 15)
Sound: 60 (now- 6)
Gameplay: 100 (now- 100)
Story: 2 (now- come on, it's Mario's never-ending quest to save his girlfriend!)
Overall: 70

Thanks Rei. :) Yes I have been extremely busy, and thank you for doing a review on your own, which everyone is encouraged to do if they like. :) School's over Thursday, and then the fam and I are going to Disneyland this weekend. After that I'll actually have some free time (ah free time, how I miss you so) so I can do more reviews. I was thinking of expanding the thread to include not just video games, but movies, music, TV, and other stuff as well. We'll see.

Also SMB3 is not only my favorite of the series, but my favorite Mario game PERIOD, so I'm gonna add a little bit to your review at a later time Rei. ;) Thanks again for bringing my little corner of Lit back to life again, and I hope more of you will contribute your own stuff too. :) Mrs. DL I believe you said you were gonna write one for us too. ;) Looking forward to it!

I got Company of Heroes for the PC a few weeks ago and talk about a helluva game. Incredible graphics, great sound quality and effects, easy to learn interface and phenomenal AI. Of course I use cheat codes to maximize my fun because I only play for 15-20 minute spurts and want to control my experience :) but, having said that, the game is incredible.

There's just nothing like sending in a batallion of US tank destroyers along with a bevy of anti-tank weapons, mortar and .50 cal machine gun teams into a Nazi base and just watch the insane carnage ensue. Utter chaos and utter fun. 9.7 rating from me.

And I'm running this game on a two year old GPU! Once I get my 8800GTX and a few more gigs of RAM, then we'll have another review. ;)

Super Mario Brothers 2 was, of course, a skin of a completely non-Mario Japanese game, modified to be a Mario game to market to American audiences. At the time, it was a great game, but I find the replaying moderately tedious at times. It's sort of a "discovery" game... once you've discovered its secrets, it's not that replayable.

I loved Mario 3. There was a lot to do if you wanted to. Giant Land was one of my personal favorites, and the oh so rare Hammer Brothers suit was highly desired. It also made co-op much more fun and interactive than the previous games. Players of differing abilities could take turns on boards, where the better player could clear boards that the lesser player would get stuck on.

I'll be doing one, but things have been a little hectic lately. I'll get it done as soon as I can, also will be working on something for a chain I'm in so it could take a little bit but I'll get it done when I can.

No worries, get it in whenever you can. There's no rush. :)

Anytime my friend- and feel free to add. I was kinda tired when I was doing this, and distracted by CT and GM @_@

Hello there. Would any of you lot know about adapters that let you use a mouse and keyboard on an Xbox?

I found this one here, but I'm just wondering if anyone's every tried one, and what you thought. http://www.maxshooter.com/ (and would it work on a 360?)

I read a review of it that mentions an adapter to plug both a PC and Xbox into a PC monitor. That'd be ideal for me, but what would you do about sound? Xbox sound comes out of the tv, and monitors don't do that, so... ?

So if anyone's had any experience melding their Xbox and PCs please let me know. I'm planning to get an Xbox so I can play Bioshock and Fallout 3, but I hate Xbox controllers.

Cheers.

Well, I've considered Guild Wars as about the only MMO I'd pick up...For me it boils down to money...While I don't mind putting down $50 for a game, and maybe some more for an expansion or two, when you then have to pay each month in order to continue playing I draw the line...okay, so it's only $20? It's the principal of the thing...Guild Wars markets itself by the fact that there are no monthly fees to play...

Too bad I simply don't have the time to play :(

Decided to pull out Mega Man X2 today and have remembered something...

I hate mid-air dashes over spiked pits!

That is all.

I figured it out eventually. Now I'm moving on to MMX3

My turn.

I dug this game out of my game pile today: Stubbs The Zombie: Rebel Without A Pulse.

This game is a lot of very silly, very gory fun. A first person shooter with a twist. A very weird twist.

Imagine a 'City Of The Future™' circa 1960 invaded by George Romero's zombies. And you are the first zombie.

You wander around Punchbowl, Pennsylvania, eating brains, falling in love and generally spreading chaos and disorder. There are several weapons at your undead disposal to accomplish all this.

Punching and kicking are your standbys. If you damage your opponents enough you stun them, which will give you an opportunity to eat their brains.

You can, um, release gas. ;) While your meals are coughing and choking it's chowdown time.

You can pull out a length of intestine and throw it at people. After a few seconds it explodes.

You can pull off your hand. Once it hits the ground you can guide it to a victim, then hit the action button. At that point your hand attaches to their skull and they're under your control. Handy if they're armed with a bazooka or ray gun.

The final weapon is pulling off your head. You then roll it like a bowling ball. You can guide it after a fashion to the left and right. While it's rolling it sprays mucous all over the place, which does the people it hits no good. When your head hits a solid object, or you hit the action button, it explodes, which also does people no good.

You only get limited uses of these weapons, but they can be reloaded by eating enough brains. Eating brains also restores your health. Your meals don't just stand around and wait for you to dine.

Everybody killed by you (except those you killed with someone you controlled) get up again as zombies. These aren't very bright, but they're useful as meat shields. You have a little control over them. They can be pushed, one at a time, in a direction you need them to go. And you can whistle for them, which starts them all moving in your direction.

You've got a lot of enemies. Football jocks, girls in poodle skirts, police, the army, mad Nazi scientists, survivalists, and my favourite, the special corporate security that are dressed in barbershop quartet outfits. They sing it too, while they're blasting you with lasers and disintegration ray guns.

Some of the things you have to do are a little weird. For example, you get out of the police station by beating the police chief in a dance contest. In another area, you have to, um, 'relieve yourself' into the city water supply. You can't leave until you've contaminated it enough to infect the whole city.

Who thinks this stuff up?

Anyway, Stubbs is a hoot. It's not a gigantic game, maybe eight hours from beginning to end. But damn, it's a lot of silly fun.

So, if you have a few hours to waste, and a strong stomach, I highly recommend it.

I figure I'll put in a good word for Guitar Hero III...I'll probably do a full review on it later, but I wanted to bump the thread toput it on my mind :D
