My story got out today. First 20-votes scored 99 points, a 4.96 average.

Along comes voter 21 -- 4.76 score after one additional vote. A troll scoring a "1".

What to do. No comments. No backbone. Just a "1". I guess all other 20 voters were wrong.

Amazes me. I see other authors address it, but it still makes me wonder the purpose. Must give some kind of warm fuzzy for them.

=========================

I was told that the best, and fastest way to have them address, and provide redress, was for the author to go to the end of their story, and "report" it under "other."

Uh, it didn't work for me, but then again, I was probably in their doghouse over my, uh, indiscretion(s).

Maybe it'll work for you. (LOL)

Luck to you. That many fives, you should have absolutely no 1's, or even a 2.

Take it as a compliment Mtn. They obviously see you as a threat. You write damn good stuff, don't let the buggers get you down!

They've been hitting the Lit Olympics stories, with considerable regularity. But, I expected that!

A happy group of people having fun always pisses off the disgruntled. ;)

it cracks me up when I see people say stuff like "yeah someone just 1-bombed and my story is down to only a 4.8" or "that damn troll pushed my story down to a mere 4.79" (not trying to single you out mtnman)

I can understand the frustration of pointless 1 votes, but sheesh, some writers act like a 4.8 is low. I'd be thrilled if any of my stories went to that level. What about those of us who can't even get 4.5 (or whatever) averages? we must really suck.

No sweets, you just need better PR!

I hear ya!

Quit ya whining, Mtn! :D :p

You are right, Kinky. Us mere mortals cheer when we get anything close to 4.5. ;)

It seems what bothers us the most is not that trolls exist, but rather that most of us don't receive enough votes to counteract the trolls. If we all got 200 votes per story consistently, 3-4 troll hits wouldn't matter much, when we're down at 20 or less, those troll hits can drop an H away if you've earned one or drop one away from H territory. It's something we can't fight, but it would be nice if we all got enough votes on a story to reveal its real merit instead of its threat to a couple of trolls with jollys.

Infact there are some very damn good writers here. With the world to fuckin draw from, I should have expected it, but as I read the endless screeds of dreck, it still amazes me sometimes how very skilled some of the folks here are.

Kudos. Genuflections and kowtows.

No shit.

Yeah, I hear ya! Two of my stories had the H mark for one day. Both H's disappeared the following morning. It was nice while it lasted!

Hmm.. If the claims of the site admin are correct, (which I know from experience, they are not), your '1' vote should eventually be removed by admin as a 'malicious vote' mtn mate, so worry not... don't hold your breath on that one though, they didn't do it for me... they left a '1' vote in and removed a '5'... Probably why I don't bother posting anything here any more.

There are three kinds of Troll... Troll 'one' sees a story approaching their own story in the top list... so they '1' vote said story to remove the threat... This character often '1' votes everyone elses stuff anyway because nobody is as good as them.

Troll 'two' reads a story that is not of a genre they normally enjoy... maybe found the tale by accident like... they '1' vote it because they didn't like it, where in reality they never were going to like it no matter how good it was, so they should just walk away without voting.

Troll 'three' is the total idiot who just roams round the boards excercising their God given power to '1' vote anything they see... Most of these can't even spell their own name, let alone read anything.

pops... Good luck with it anyway mate, must have a read later.

The other thing I've seen is that it is category dependent. For one thing certain categories get more serious readers, so a simply malicious vote is more diluted.

The other problem is some categories are ambiguous. For example BDSM can refer to either a consensual relationship or actual abuse and domination. Those people looking for one type of story will almost by definition hate the othere.

in your opinion, which categories attract the "serious" readers?

You'll know when you get good feedback. It might not be pretty, but good feedback is rarely pretty, it's help and might even make you feel good about yourself
