I know people have had problems with MSN, but has anyone had issues chatting on MSN through Trillian? Tonight, the characters were periodically appearing 3-5 seconds after I'd typed them. I'm not the world's fastest typist, and I know it's not my computer or keyboard because it's working fine in every other program and when I chat with someone on Yahoo through Trillian. It was probably what would be considered a peak traffic time...could that have something to do with it? Any other ideas?

I haven't had any trouble, but yours might be a firewall issue. It happens occasionally when the person you are chatting with is behind serious firewalls, like if the are at work for example.

Thanks for the replies...I've never had trouble with MSN either, but I almost never use it, so who knows? It sounds like I may need to do some more investigating though.

I don't use MSN, but I do use Trillian (with AIM, Yahoo & icq enabled). Up until 2 weeks ago, everything was fine - but icq gave out on me. Now I can't use it at all without getting errors of various kinds. I downloaded normal icq, and it's happening there as well - so I guess it's not Trillian's fault.

My guess is that your problem with MSN was due to high traffic. But, when in doubt, exit trillian and restart it - sometimes it helps clear things up.

That's good to know. I'd like to avoid downloading Messenger if possible, so I'll just wait and see.

hmm, I can't seem to find where to update it. I just tried creating a new icq name/password, and I still can't get it to work. In Trillian, it just tells me that the connection has failed. In normal icq, the error message reads, "Runtime error... abnormal termination" or something to that effect. I'm running the latest versions of both trillian and icq - anyone have a clue as to why they won't work? Yes, I've tried uninstalling icq and reinstalling it. Still no luck.

erika: any recent changes in your machine's environment? new firewall software, hasn't been rebooted in a while (if you're running windows), any other apps that might be using the port or interfering w/ trillian's ability to get to the internet?

Nope...nothing's changed, though I don't know when we re-booted. Perhaps I'll try that.

if you're running any flavor of windows, that might itself be the problem. :> XP is better than the older versions about this, but it just isn't as rock-solid stable as some other OSes, i understand.

OMG, i've just recommended to someone that their PC issue could be addressed by re-booting...i've become a helpdesk guy! gah!

Not to upset you, Helpdesk Guy, but rebooting seems to have solved the problem with Trillian. Why I didn't think of it is beyond me (oh wait...hubby has been monopolizing the computer lately), so thanks for the reminder! :rose:

Try this
1. Start Trillian
2. Select Help -> Check for Updates
3. A window with available updates will appear.
4. Check the box near "AIM and ICQ Update"
5. Press Next andf follow wizard instructions

You're my new hero, bvoltaire :) I only use icq to talk to one friend, and would have hated to have to keep icq running in addition to trillian. You rock!

Erika - when in doubt, always reboot. I'm notorious for leaving my computer on for weeks at a time as well (the longest I've ever gone was 3.5 months, but that was when I was running Linux), and Windows tends to get quite unhappy if it can't have its naptime.
