Never in the history of my existence have I been more concerned about how both political parties are dividing our nation.

Labeling yourself Democrat, Republican automatically puts you into the us vs them stereotype. This is dangerous folks. Divided we lose what made this nation great. When politics can not be discussed and debated openly, we put in danger democracy.

Be careful on where and how you get your news. The internet is an amazing thing, but has created a profile of who you are and you are being fed what you are more likely going to click on.

Believe it or not, most of us
We want the same thing.

We want term limits
We want less corporate influences in govt.
We want our representatives to represent what we want
We don't want all of our hard earned savings to go toward medical care when we get sick. (Not where else in the world do we stand a greater chance of going bankrupt when we get sick than in the US)
We want to be able to live where we want to live and not be told where we can't live
We want to be able to get an education and give our kids an education without adding a 30 year note to pay off.
We don't want to have to wait in line for 8 hours to cast a vote, yet we are making it more difficult to do just that for fear of our votes being forged, not counted etc.
We are tired of corruption in our govt.
We don't want to be lied to and mislead, yet we don't hold either side accountable for the lies that are being spread.

Does this sound like a Democratic or Republican view?

Independent thinking, filtering the noise and restoring what made us great is my goal. Oh, and all of the above.

Don't include me in term limits.

Most elections are local-issue orientated.
If the people in a district elect less-than-stellar people,
then they are probably being properly represented by one of their peers.

A term limit is an idea that aims to cull the borderline bad players
but also has the effect of putting the kibosh on good players too...

Sorry..
It is an us vs them reality. This country has no place for Fascism. Those that pretend Fascism is not a problem and don't call it out...are just as much of the problem. This is true if you are Republican...Democrat...or independent thinker (which you are not)

Tom Daschle once declared the Democrat Party fascist. No one batted an eye. It's obvious that it's true.

A Fascist could not make his position any more clear than you just did.

There is no room whatsoever for a variety of thought and opinion,
there is only one valid school of politics and it is mine.

Everyone else should be shunted off to
the Gulag of Totalitarian Ideas...

But you're not a Fascist.

Lol, so now calling someone out is being shunted off to the gulag? Are you taking histrionic lessons from emobo by any chance?

.
I have a pretty simple standard for who I will engage with in civil political discourse:

If you voted for the traitor in chief you are below my standard.

Sociopathic anarchistic "Libertarians" also fall well below my standard as well.

*nods*

The housesquaw worships at the Shrine Of Perpetual Victimhood, as does his emobro BoBo.

The Chief does make one salient point, though....."term limits' makes a bad situation worse. What term limits effectively do is downgrade politicians into public mouthpieces for an entrenched faceless permanent bureaucracy.

It sounds like a list most Democrat are opposed to or we wouldn't be seeing them pursuing policies that do the opposite.

Democrats in Congress have been open to debating bills. Republicans in Congress haven't let the process get that far.

We have term limits in the UK. We call them elections.

Term limits and discussion

Just got back from spending time out and about today and looking at the progress. Still looks like tribalism is alive and well. Sticking points seem to be Term limits as a start.

This is from a national poll recently (Oct 2021)

82% of voters agree with a Constitutional Amendment that will place term limits on members of Congress. Term limits are supported by at least two-thirds of every surveyed demographic group. Likewise, an overwhelming majority of voters across party lines favor term limits: 87% Republicans, 83% Democrats and 78% Independents.

My point here is as voters, our representatives are not doing anything that we feel is important. Term limits would eliminate the status quo and cleaning out the house with people who spend a career getting wealthy in office instead of the original intent of being a public servant and sacrificing for the good of the country is not happening. If you can't accomplish what your voters ask you to do over and over again, you are part of the problem and 8 years or 12 years should be plenty of time to accomplish this.

Unfortunately we can all say we want all those, but we don't agree that the other guys want that even if they say they do. Like both AOC and Josh Hawley say they're for a ban on Congressmen trading stocks, but it'll be very surprising to me if they work together in a bipartisan way to get that through the congress and senate as legislation.

Also the tribalism is because of the atmosphere of our media we consume. On both sides right and left we're fed a steady diet of other side bad, and other side evil. It's their business model. It's the only way they can keep us slavishly tuning in to find out what's those mustache-twilring other guys are up to this week.

Tribalism is an evolutionary trait that serves many purposes,
but is does cause the subtle discrimination of Us verses Them.

The press is not a driver of this, it is older than the written word.
The press is merely a symptom/result of the natural proclivities...

Term limits? In the UK's House of Lords, once elected you are there for life whether you contribute or not. It has been proposed recently that any member of the Lords should retire at age 75.

Not surprisingly, the Speaker of the Lords (over 80) objects.;)

Term Limits are small-minded for while they will temporarily eliminate the bad,
they similarly eliminate the good.

It should be kept in mind that Democracies (a pernicious evil) are representative.
So, when you get a scoundrel in office, you get a measure of his* constituency
and which communities that you should shun/ban/possiby even nuke...

;) ;) :D

* After the traditional rules of English grammar and third person, but also because I don't want to piss off the women.

In the UK with defied constituencies and the first past the post system,. it doesn't matter for many who you vote for - you will ALWAYS get the same party elected. In my constituency, it doesn't matter if I vote Labour, or Liberal, or Monster Raving Loony (yes, they are a real UK political party), a Conservative will be elected even if he is a talking dog.
