Traditional gender roles: Yes or no?

People are uncomfortable with them.

When people ask what I do and I say 'housewife' people then ask how many children I have. I said house WIFE not 'stay at home mother'. When I say none people look kinda angry. ( actually my situation is more complicated than that but it's no one's business unless they are collecting tax from me or some such, in which case my disclosure is full)

If you don't work..how is there tax to collect?:D

I am male

Retired, do most housework, cooking and grandchildren sitting.
Only fair my wife works.

They are certainly not for everyone.

I have worked a number of jobs, but also have been lucky enough to spend a number of years at home with my kids. I enjoy being able to play with them, and I enjoy cleaning, cooking etc.

It wasn't always strictly traditional, and it worked.

More than one reason, Collecting benefits of previous work for example. I have a small buisness I have been trying to wrap up, but my clients won't go. ( it still leaves me essentially not working, which also means there is the tax of businesses not personal to consider, and employees and what) we have a couple of other income streams, but it's like saying I am a manicurist because I do my own nails. It's moments of my time. There is also tax on savings, property, local taxes. We are not particularly tax efficient, but there are still the full declarations to make each year, his, mine the business ones.

Hey, no need to explain to me

There's what I need...a woman that enjoys cleaning:D

We live in an age of Burger King values, have it your way. If you think your a woman, presto! Your not only a woman but businesses, people, even government will fall over themselves to accommodate you out of conformity. Nobody is willing to say the emperor has no clothes on.

I remember a day when you were fun to interact with.

Gender roles are social, not biological (other than the obvious reproduction thang). Not all societies adopt the same roles. And roles change over time; cf. Rosie the Riveter.

Traditional roles might include temple prostitution, multiple spouses, acts I can't describe here involving youths or animals, chattel slavery, etc. Ya gotta watch them traditions, eh?

I agree with Hypoxia. If you mean traditional to be synonymous with contemporary western gender roles, then for me its a mix.

Though to be fair, I'm not married and have no kids, so I don't think it really matters for me.

At the end of the day I don't think it matters. If a couple are happy and healthy together, they can chose how their personal lives work. It's not for us to decide who brings home the money or who cleans the house and watches the kids (extremities but you get the point).
