Touching screen no longer places cursor

I have a touch screen laptop. (Who doesn't, right?)

Recently, touching my screen in the "Title" or "Message" areas will not place the cursor. The dark black outline that appears around a writing area when I touch the screen does appears, but the cursor doesn't. I have to move the cursor with my mouse and tap the mouse pad to make the cursor appear.

If I try to long press on text in the "Message" window to do any sort of function, such as select a single word or "Select All", it won't let me do it. I have to use the mouse.

This problem does not exist on other web sites.

And it doesn't happen all the time.

Any ideas?

Trolls and idiots, feel free to be assholes and post your shitty comments. I could use the bump.

See, now that time it worked. Why?

I came back to add some more information.

I can tap "Quick Links" and "Subscribed Threads" or anyone of the other pull down menu options just fine.

I can no longer long tap a the title of a subscribed thread to get the "right mouse button" pull down menu (from which I copy and paste the thread's name). Instead, it opens the thread.

Have you tried more than one browser? For example, if you usually use Chrome, try doing the same thing in Firefox. If the problem goes away in the different browser, that means there’s something up in the settings or temp files of your usual browser, and clearing caches/resetting to defaults will likely do the trick.

If the problem exists in both browsers, then the issue is thornier, since it isn’t browser specific (the vast majority of issues similar to what you describe are related to browser-specific temp files/settings, in my experience.)

Forgive the potentially dumb question: have you fully rebooted your computer since the problem began? Not just put it to sleep or hibernation, but a full on system restart. It’s amazing how many weird problems get resolved simply by kicking your computer in the ass and restarting it.

I used Internet Explore and tried Edge. Didn't work. Are those browsers? (Sorry, I'm not a techie.)

So, you're suggesting I get Chrome. When I go to certain sites (including Google maps, it always askes me if I want to get Chrome.)

I did a Reset two days ago. No help. Took hours and all it did was delete some of my apps, requiring me to replace the ones I wanted.

Is Reset the same as Refresh? I use an Acer.

It sounds like your Acer is running Windows 10, if it has Edge on it. Does that sound right to you?

Yes, Internet Explorer and Edge are browsers, but they are kinda sorta the same.

If you are interested in the try-different-browser experiment, I would recommend Firefox over Chrome, but that’s a personal preference. :)

A reboot/restart is something different than a Reset. Resets, as you discovered, muck about with the software on your computer. A reboot keeps all your current stuff, and just makes it rerun your computers opening sequence, if that makes any sense.

If your computer runs Windows 10, here’s how to restart...
  • Save all your work!!!
  • Close as many of your open windows as you can (this is not a necessary step, but can make things less annoying)
  • Open the Start window by clicking the start icon at the very bottom left of the screen (it’s supposed to look like a tilted window, but I think it’s ugly)
  • Click the Power icon (a circle with a line through the top of it). A small window with a short list of options should appear.
  • Choose “Restart”

Windows 10 will then do its best to close up shop and restart. It may ask you a bunch of stupid questions.

Here’s a screenshot that might help.
