Hi, I'm new here and I'm completely freaking lost.

My friend sent me here, told me to post my stuff, I read the FAQ's but I still don't know what the heck I'm doing...

I don't know if my stuff would work here. I'm was just pointed in this direction.

A little about me:

I write, a lot. Mostly fan-fic stuff, and frequently it gets, invovled i guess you would say, but I haven't gotten completely comfortable with detailed descriptions of certain things (without laughing at what I wrote and erasing it) and I would like to expand, but again I don't know if this is where I really should be.

Hell, I don't even feel 100% comfortable with saying all that *laugh*

I'm actually trying to become a serious writer. I want published, and I've been my own worst critic about it.

I mostly do fantasies, and what isn't a fan-fic usually invovles magic of some form.

So, are fan-fics allowed here? Namely this one I wrote involving a certain online computer game...

Well, it's really pretty simple--as a registered member here, you can submit stories. And yes, fan-fic is allowed under the "celebrity" category. That means fiction that involves real life celebrities or established characters. As this is an erotica site, readers will expect to see some erotica in your story unless you post it in the "non-erotic" category. Erotica doesn't have to mean "sex" so much as sexual feelings, tension, etc.

So, you submit your story, and after about a week, the folk who run this site will tell you if your story is either acceptable or not. If not, they'll say why (like you need to edit the sentence structure more or one of the characters engaging in sex is under age--every person engaging in sex must be 18 or older). If not accepted, you can change the story and re-submit.

Submitted and accepted stories get posted in their respective categories for anyone to read. You can decide if you want votes, comments or feedback on the stories. Votes are ratings--high or low--and can earn you prizes (like "Best story for the month of July"), comments are left at the end of the story for everyone to read, and feedback goes directly to you for your eyes only. Be aware that there are "trolls" and so if you say you want votes or comments or feedback, you might get rude comments from stupid people.

That's the nature of being a writer though. You put yourself and your writing out there and any idiot can say what they like about it.

What more do you need to know?

I suggest, by the by, that you go to the "Celebrities" category and just read some of the stories there. It'll tell you, better than we can, if you're in the right place where your stories can reach readers who'd best appreciate them.

Hello and welcome!

Fan-fic is kind of an unknown in the lit categories-- it's called "celebrity fiction" If the main focus is sci-fi and fantasy, i'd say post it in that category and add the FF disclaimer into an author's note at the beginning....

Sex gets written in any way the author sees fit, from gentle allusion to hardcore graphic. And the readers as well look for different levels-- but you should know that most people come here looking for strokers and not much more.

What game are you writing? You can say it out loud! ;)

Welcome! It sounds like you've come to the right place. And personally, I'm delighted that you're feeling a little reticent on the "involvement" of your characters; sometimes, when one is in a location where one *can* say anything one likes, one comes to miss the willing limitation of what is actually said. A little coyness is a charm.

Lol, the game is World of Warcraft, I'm sure someone's heard of it before.

I write a numer of "sexual tension" type stories, mostly (what someone told me) fluff pieces. I want to write "romance" on the same page as laura kinsale, though I'll probably never be THAT good lol.

mostly, I just wanted to know the best category for the "fan-fics" and I'll go check out celebrity (thank you for that).

But I also have some stuff that is completely original, just no one other than me has seen them because I haven't overly felt comfortable letting other people see them. However, that being said, my lovely friend giggled hysterically when she read my WoW-fic but told me to post it here.

After nearly 7 years of putting up with trolls, flamers, and other types of rude, hateful, or otherwise just nasty people, I feel like I might as well throw it out there and see if SOMEBODY likes my stuff, so my friend pointed me here :)

I think, I hope I can take even the nastiest critism, I mean if I want to get out there and actually published, I got to live with people not liking me right?

I guess I just feel like breeching my comfort level.

Check out the Romance and sci-fi/fantasy categories as well then. They sound like the places for your original fic.

And it sounds like you're ready to go. After doing a little reading to see if you like this place, head to the front page (that's the one with a list of categories and such), click on "login." That will take you to your member's page. Click on "submissions" then "submit"...and now you can submit a story.

I think the best way to start is to read some of the stories here, particularly in your categories of celebrity fiction and sci-fi. But don't be intimidated if some of them seem better to you than what you've written. We're all our own worst critics, usually, and there's almost always someone better and someone worse at what we do in life. An editor can be a big help too. Good luck. I'm sure you'll fit in just fine. There are people of all different kinds here. :rose:

*Warning: editor approaches, apologizing for trespassing in the "wrong" board and promising to leave quickly without stealing the silverware*

As several others have pointed out, fan-fics are welcome at Lit but getting them published commercially is another kettle of chowder. There are tons of copyright issues and other legal problems with publishing fan-fic in a commercial venue. It can be done, but you would have to assemble a significant pile of permissions, copyright waivers, and other legal documents before a publisher would even talk to you, and none of these would come cheaply. In many instances, they would be impossible to obtain.

There's little doubt that you'd be better off posting the fan-fiction here, getting your fix on it and using it to improve your writing skills, and then try to publish work in other genres that aren't such legal minefields.

Being your own worst critic isn't a bad thing; it's essential for improvement, in fact. But it can be overdone, especially if it's leading you to delete everything you write. You might want to try posting excerpts of some of your better work on the Story Feedback board or here in the AH and asking for constructive criticism.

Alternately, if you're still not comfortable with putting your writing into a semi-public venue, you could send your work to one of the volunteer editors.
(We VEs are mean, rotten, and nasty, but we'll beat up on you in private, and nobody else will ever know about it.) If you want to do that, be sure to contact an editor in advance, to make certain that he or she is still active--which many are not--and also make an effort with someone who is willing and able to do content editing as well as line editing or proofreading.

Welcome aboard, and good luck.

Oh trust me-- in the celeb category? It's hard to do worse than most of what's there.

Lol no way in the seven layers of anything would I ever try to "publish" a fan-fic. I would be too terrified of lawyers XD

I would like to use my fan-fics to "cut my teeth" on the other stuff I write. Mostly, because my original stuff, I would like to publish, but I use my "Fan-fics" to get a feel for what I'm doing in the bigger picture. Basically getting a feel for how shaping a pre-exisiting idea, can help give life to my own ideas. Does that make sense? It made less sense when I tried to explain it than it did in my head.

Basically, if I get a good reception on my fan-fics then maybe my original stuff would be "up to par" and then again there's that ever biting paranoia of, if I put what I want published online, someone might steal it, and who wants to steal a fan-fic?

So in no way was a considering a published fan-fic :p I hope that clears that up.

Unfortunately, my own critisms have made me delete chapters and chapters of stuff I wrote because I thought it sounded like a 2 year old wrote after I read it, and then a couple of people I had shown it to were mad because THEY liked it X(

I really want to stop doing that. Again, I'm just tryign to "breech my comfort level"

I like your standards. I still get messages, now and then, about a series I took down a year ago, but I deleted every line of it directly from the hard drive, and I don't regret it. It's good to have goals and to aim to improve.

But Lit is good that way. You can put things up, play about, learn some more, and then update them or remove them or revamp them any way you like. It's very author-control-friendly.

I can guarantee, Copy_Carver, that everyone who's posted even one fan fiction piece online knows all about all of the ramifications. :)

Makes lots of sense, actually. Working with pre-existing protagonists and settings cuts way down on the amount of "world building" that would otherwise be necessary and allows you to focus on process, mechanics, etc. Eventually, of course, you'll need to start building those worlds--or at least small portions thereof--but it's probably better to move forward a few steps at a time.

Yep, putting your work out there is always the hardest part. The famous quote attributed to Red Smith is: "Writing is easy. Just open a vein and let it bleed." If that was true for sportswriting, fiction ramps up the blood flow exponentially. It takes a little while to get used to the whole idea.

The good part is that you can take some chances semi-anonymously around here. You may get a one-bomb or a scathing comment now and then, but the bad review won't be published in the New York Times alongside your picture.

Welcome. :)

Might I also suggest participation in some of the writing exercises on the threads here? I've learned a lot doing those, and they can be great fun, as well as a way to get to know other Lit writers. We have three flash-fic type threads going at the moment and a few others. It's a good way to put some writing out there without commiting yourself to something big right away.

Its OK, we don't have no trolls here.

Hahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahhahahhahaha

OK, really we do but not as many as the nice peoples, and you can come hang out in here and bitch about the trolls, and swoon about the nice peoples, and just kick back and relax.

Also in the AH, which is here, there is more nice peoples, you will get flamed and burnt crispy if you go to the GB section, which you might like but I don't recommend it. I think the GB section is really the troll section.

Anyways, Welcome to the AH!!!!!!!!!!

We only bite when you say please.

:rose:

Welcome to the AH. Nice to have you here.

I doubt I'll read your fan-fic stuff. I'm so out of touch with modern culture I probably wouldn't have the slightest idea who you're writing about. ;)

I will probably read your original stuff. I like to see what the people who hang hear have to say.

I' just extending a smile and a handshake of welcome -you've had all the good advice stuff already :)

Hey! I post in the GB and I'm not a troll. All those rumors were just lies! Yes, please do post in the Flashfic threads. (Thanks, tk!) The one sentence challenge is fun, too.

Now, where's the chocolate?

A welcome  from the good little witch.

I guess I'm only of the lucky ones. I haven't had to deal with any trolls in regards to comments on my stories. Just a few uninformed people who didn't read my story correctly. I hope you don't have to deal with too many trolls, GG. :p

I'm resisting the urge to spam my credentials cause Stella told me off last time *g*

Edited to add: I was going to PM you a link to my WoW junk but you don't have them enabled :( so I'll brave posting it here

But in this thread, surely, your creds are totally germaine....

Sheesh, I'm so sorry!

Hello. Strike first and ask later. Watch your back. Never put any porn in your stories. The trolls like that shit. :D
