SUFFOLK, Va. - The National Weather Service says three tornadoes touched down in Virginia. Meteorologist Bryan Jackson says the twisters hit Suffolk, Colonial Heights and Brunswick County on Monday afternoon. Authorities say at least 200 people were injured. Property damage was widespread.

Jackson says the Brunswick County tornado was estimated at 86 mph to 110 mph, and cut a 300-yard path of destruction. Assessments of the other twisters were planned for Tuesday, but Jackson described Suffolk's as a "major tornado."

Everyone in Virginia okay? And there's more twisters on the way! Find Toto and stay safe.

I hate that my sister lives in a tornado prone area of the country and yet doesn't have a basement. It worries me.

The southeast is a very tonado prone area, and few folks have a basement.

We get used to do hunkerin down in the bathtub during tornado warnings.

We get in an interior closet with a tarp to cover up.

But if the roof comes off...

Tornados are just one of those things you get used to, like earthquakes on the west coast.

I confess, though, that once the sirens start going off, its a little eerie.

I've never gotten used to them, and I wish I could get the hell away from here.

We always remain prepared during the peak season - weather radio, flashlights, batteries, water and food in the downstairs fridge, solid safe area (the laundry room is actually the best place - no windows).

But we try to make it a game. A party.

Thunderstorm party! Tornado watch party! Get some microwave popcorn going and hang out downstairs watching TV, eating munchies. The kids have fun, the parents do the worrying.

Hmmm...Maryland here, but still keeping a close eye on the weather forecast.

I agree...the sirens are creepy. They have that WW2 feel to them. *shudder*

Our sirens don't go off as often as the news insists on reporting systems with rotations in them. I agree though, when the sirens do go off...

Near here - the tornadoes were less than 20 miles away. There have been some conflicting news reports, but I think there is only property damage. I watched the trees sway quite impressively, but the weak were weeded out a few years back.

I live in Alabama, so the sirens go off fairly frequently.

I'm sure they do. Hope nothing happens. :rose:

I've had one come within about twenty yards of our house once - fairly small one. It ripped a 400-year-old oak in half, jumped over our house, then tore the roof off the neighbors house.

That was plenty close enough for me.

Something hinky going on with cable news networks....Fox had live coverage for about twenty minutes until O'Reilly came on and then not a word. Nothing at all on CNN or MSNBC or the broadcast channels.

Whatever happened to reporting the news I wonder?

Amicus.....

Most seemed to go away after they reported that one had hit NOB Norfolk
Naval Operations Base Norfolk is the largest Naval base in the world. :D
Hope none of my brothers in arms were hurt. My sub homeported there in the 70's. :(

They mentioned one Destroyer in port at the time but showed no videos of the base or the surrounding area, could be security or flight restrictions for news helicopters maybe, dunno.

I heard 200 injuries but no reported fatalities, but one small town devastated, again no video and then the coverage just stopped...dunno...

Don't use the satellite view on Google maps for a ship count. They use two shots only and they never are accurate. Same 4 subs for 3 years now and how often are 3 carriers in port at once? :D
I can't imagine only one tin can in port.
5 or 6 with a couple of crusiers would be normal. :)

I heard the same, 200 injured, most minor, so far , hope it was that lucky!

Didn't know that about the google earth pics, but makes sense, nice to know, thanks...

By the way, NOB Norfolk is fine. The same tornado that tore Suffolk apart jumped and landed at NOB, but most of the energy had dissipated by then. The all-hands muster the next day was impressive.

Thanks for the update :D
