Top Secret: THE RETROSEXUAL CODE

The ancient Greeks loved real men. Look at those statues. mmm.
In the ancient Greek culture homosexual love was considered the highest form of love, and a homosexual man was considered the most masculine of men. There were homosexual gods too.

This is historically accurate, not a post-mod theory. Just read the original texts (philosophy, poetry, drama, epics).

Absolutely. I was only sticking to the word 'retrosexual' because that's what the original list posted by Rumple had said.

Well-rounded is definitely a much better term.

Of course, what people fail to appreciate is that well-rounded means that you're going to have qualities from BOTH sides of the debate. Yes, even the side you don't like. Just because I have neanderthal qualities, it does not make me a neanderthal, as those who've heard me play Paganini on the guitar will testfy to. And just because I have culture and sophistication, that does not make me a 'faggity-ass queer boy' as those who've seen me win medals at martial arts tournaments will testify to.

Well-rounded. Yes.

I'm sold. (on your post at least:)) You put it much better than the 'retrosexual' list.

We just argue with you, cuz your so sexy when you get frustrated:D

You GUYS say it so much better than I was actually trying to.

One question: What about the well-rounded woman?

I've met several men who are intimidated by my ability to work on cars, and clean a gun, but delighted by the other side of the coin.......Do you guys appreciate a woman with "both" sets of qualities as well as we appreciate men like that?
Most definitely. I think the male ability to do all those "manly" things like cars, wiring, is actually not because they know better how to do it, but because they are brought up to thing that "Hey, it can't be all that bloody hard", and just set out to do it. That is an admirable quality in anyone. Being a doer is a major plus in my book.

What really intimidates me are those women who live up to the stereotype of female practical inability. (and men who dares not do typically "female" things, like tending kids or cooking) I have met women who couldn't change a tire, hit a nail or even replace a lightbulb. THey probably could, but they have a mental block to even try. I mean, what the hell do you say to them? They are all modern, smart people, but I just want to scream at them sometimes to not be such...well...women?

I have to confess, I am quite capable of changing a tire, etc., etc., but will gleefully play the "helpless female" occasionally.

Story in point: several weeks ago I was on my way to run some errands (I live way, way out in BFE), with my three year old in the car when my right front tire imploded (literally). I had pulled over, taken the jack, spare, etc., out of the car when a very nice, very older gentleman pulled over and asked if I needed some help. I let him change the tire for me......it made him feel that he had done his good deed for the day, and I didn't get so dirty that I would need to go home and change before starting out again. No harm in that, is there?

Absolutely, I admire 'well-roundedness' in anyone, regardless of gender. I think there's enough differences between the sexes without accentuating them by restricting what skills people should or shouldn't have.

Aye, which is why I said in my post it's not about being gay or straight. I know lots of homosexual and bisexual guys who are much more adept at fixing a car than I am and one of the best martial artists I ever knew was gay.

Stereotypes do exist because there's a basis in fact for them, but at the same time it doesn't mean you have to limit yourself to them.

I think they also repressed women and were more relaxed about sex with children. Funny old world.

Let me just say: Amen.

Edited to add: to raphy's post (since DL's got in between)

Yes, women were considered less than men, or imperfect men. But a homosexual was super-masculine. Pedophilia was common in most cultures for centuries.

Perdita, you always come up with the neatest info! love an interesting woman!

Uh, thanks, Cloudy. Knowing about super-fags and pedophiliacs makes me interesting? Want to hear what I think of patriotic Texans?

Perdita ;)

My bit of misinformation.

I thought that the 'typical' Texan was of Mexican descent and spoke Spanish more than English.

The redneck Texan is an endanged species and outnumbered.

Of course I may be wrong...

Super-fags.

X-men, eat you heart out.

I think she made it fairly clear on the other thread ;)

you're right, of course. I'm being deliberately dense.

Kinda don't want to piss anyone else off with my opinions today, so being very accomodating - being bitch-slapped once a day is quite enough for me.:D

I dare you to post that in the Texan thread, Ogg. Aw, no I don't, I want you alive here.

Nah - not really. Stereotypes exist 'cos in the wild you're more likely to stay alive if you react quickly than if you take the time to be sure to react correctly - it's a survival trait when things are hunting you.

When there ain't things hunting you (to eat you) you're living in civilisation - and time taken to check that spelling and punctuation are what was intended (like most posts here evidently do) is worthwhile.

Civilised.

(Go on then, tear strips off that ;) )

Damn straight.

The guys who are intimidated probably have concerns about their "masculinity". Unless they're jocks, it's tough in this urban world for young guys to prove themselves. One of the advantages of getting a few years under your belt is that, with luck, you also get a few "scalps" such as family, kids. professional accomplishments, even awards.

As for the "Real Men" deal, that was always supposed to be a joke. But some poor S.O.B's. took it seriously. Remeber childern, that paragon of machoness, James Bond, drank vodka martini's that were stirred, not shaken--or some such crap--and he knew how to dress.

Rumple Foreskin

ps: Here's one more: Whether the guy is retro, metro, homo, or hetero, a real man doesn't give a shit what a bunch of writers think about him. :)

I hate when members of my sex jump up and scream when they see a mouse! (or spider) For Pete's sake, give me a break. I like mice and I'm usually the spider killer (or free-er, depending on my mood) in my group weather male or female. I am however afraid of bees when they come in the house.

I also hate asking for help opening jars. I'll get it my self by gumm!!!
