Don't tell anyone that I told you about this, but we are working on the new "Times Read" feature, which has been requested many times by authors and readers alike. Eventually, we will make this data available for every story and it will be updated more often, but for now I just wanted to give you a sneaky peek at what's in the works. Check it out here:
http://www.literotica.com/stories/most_clicked.php

I'm not sure how long that link will work, but have fun while it lasts! I was pleasantly surprised by exactly how many times stories are being read.

Holy Cow!

You mean over 11000 people read one of my stories? Or at least clicked on it? That is absolutely UNBELIEVABLE. I mean, you write a short story and it gets publised at a good literary magazine, maybe it gets to a few thousand people. You publish a first novel, the paperback run would probably be, what? Five thousand, ten thousand copies? To get 11000 people to at least eyeball one of my stories is incredible.

Once someone clicks on one of your stories, it's the author's job to make sure it's interesting enough to the reader finish the whole thing. So looks like Laurel & Manu are doing their job-- we just gotta do the best job we can doing ours!

geeze!!!!!!!!!

Over 45,000 read-throughs of the #1 Times Read story? Stunning. Amazing. Astounding.

A Great Idea...

...and I promise I won't tell anyone.

So, is that like in a day or a running total?

I'd guess a running total from when the stats started recording, which is why they are all new stories.

That being the case, I'd like to see the date posted added to the mix so there is some indication of how long a story has accumulated the total it has.

Views/day would NOT be a useful statistic, because the majority of views accumulate in the first week while a story is on the new stories list.

We've had to turn it on and off a few times during testing, but we started keeping count on 3/26. It's a running total. Once it's implemented on the site, it will show the date of submission and the links will be clickable and all that. We also plan to add this statistic to the author login area, so you can check all of your stories easily. The list you see at the link above is just what Manu and the programmer guy are using for testing purposes. I just thought it was cool, and wanted to share it even though I'm probably not supposed to yet. ;)

This actually very cool! Now if all those click and reads left a vote....

Votes per view

My story "My Naughty Neighbors Ch.6" (yes, those neighbors are so naughty I needed 6 chapters to show how naughty) has been viewed 11688 times, but I've only recieved 46 votes. Using a neat trick called "division" that works out to 254 views per vote received. I don't know if that's depressing or exhilarating. That means like hundreds of thousands have read my stories. Or...hundreds of thousands of people clicked on my stories, read the first few paragraphs, and said, "Ah, fuck it," and hit the Back button.

Can anyone else give us their "vote per view" statistic? Just to see if mine is in the ballpark.

The category your story is in will have more to do with that ratio than anything else.

Romance stories get higher scores out of fewer votes/read than any other category.

loving wives stories and group sex stories generally will have higher votes/read with lower scores than romance stories.

The site I based those esimates on doesn't do incest stories, so I don't know how they would work out, but from the number of incest stories in the top stories here, I'd guess they would tend towards high marks and high votes/reads.

254 reads/vote sounds like a good ratio to me. Similar stories at Eroticstories.com have as many as 1000 reads/vote.

We've got the story counter turned off temporarily while we do stuff to the server. Once everything's in place, we'll test the bejesus out of it and hook it up to your author login areas. woo hoo!

Without sounding overly conservative or a prude,
doesnt it worry anyone else that the majority of
stories that are read most are incest based?

Now although I accept incest is really only a tribal
taboo in place only to prevent inbreeding, I still
have problems in thinking that fantasies of incest
can be a sign of mental good health. Didn't all the
greek myths comprising of such end in tragedy?

Maybe other peoples relatives aren't as ugly as mine.

LOL

But it doesn't say how many times the stories are read by the same person. I'm pretty sure that of the 16,233 people who viewed "How To Fuck Yourself In The Ass" 15,250 are actually Kid Rock.

LOL! It's got a check in it so it only counts each unique read. Otherwise, "How To Fuck Yourself In The Ass" would have 31,483 views.

I'm with ya...my relatives are not near drool-worthy, lol. Not all sites allow incest stories, so I think that's part of it. The rest of it...I dunno.

Flavor of the month

I suspect, but don't know for sure, that incest just happens to be in fashion right now. It's a hunch.

I have another hunch: the vote count is so low compared to the read count because many people who browse around and read the stories don't (or don't YET) consider themselves part of the Literotica Community, and thus may not feel that they have any "business" voting. The doors are wide open, the merchandise is free, but they're "just looking." Perhaps they don't want to have any real contact with our fine smut but for their own use of it. After all, how many people linger around at the peepshow booths hoping to meet friends?

The first ten or twelve times I visited the site, before I decided I wanted to be a part of it, I didn't vote AT ALL. I started voting only after I'd posted something of my own, because I felt like it wasn't fair for me to offer an opinion without being willing to put my own butt on the line to back it up. Maybe that's a common sentiment, maybe it's not, but I know it's out there. That much is NOT a hunch.

One voters have no shame. I'll bet a "onesey" wouldn't dare to post something on this site, because they'd have to vote more than a "one" on their own pieces and if they hit a "five" they just know their PC would crash and they'd lose track of all their chain letters that they've been hoarding in their saved e-files.

Impertinent Questions:

1. When was the last time I ran into a good friend at a peepshow?
2. Is incest repellent available over the counter?
3. Was it really Jesus who turned the story counter off?
4. Was this like in a day or over the period of the first hundred and fifty years after the Acts of the Apostles?

What was this thread about again?

1. When was the last time I ran into a good friend at a peepshow?

Once upon a time, the summer that i was 16 years old, i ran into my father at a place called Black's Beach. That's correct, it's a nude beach. We were both nude and cruising down the beach at water's edge, me going north, him coming south.

I don't know who was more horrified, him or me, when we realized almost simultaneously who the other was. All i know for sure is that i hurried my little naked (well-tanned) butt back to my towel, where i got dressed and off the beach in a big whomping hurry. I didn't go back at all that summer. My dad and i never talked about it, either. Still haven't. (And we're NOT a prudish family.)

Incest doesn't do anything for me and never has, despite having come pretty close to playing hot sweaty sex games with a very handsome cousin one summer. (Why do these things always happen to me in the summer?) Wish i could write it though. THOSE authors get readers.

Good question, Lyssa, no matter how tongue-in-cheek. I haven't thought of this in years!

My cousin who was one month older than I was propositioned me when I was in my teens. We had been talking about sexual expression and all the serious things teens talk about when my cousin "popped the question." I backed out--gracefully I thought. Later on I found out my one year younger sister took him up on the idea. You never know.

Those authors do get readers here on this site. But don't forget your work is closer tracked on Lit than on some of the other major sites. When Annejet.pair.com opens her guests stories links again, try that site--her readers are more receptive to your style. You might look through the work that Anne747 has done to get an idea.
