is it possible to drink too much water? other than having to pee a lot and making you feel really full, is there anything bad that could happen?

just wondering... i've been drinking huge quantities of late.

Just don't run into anything sharp or you might pop. Heh j/k :) No bad side effects that I know of. Don't forget your body is mostly water.

The major concern is *why* you are drinking so much water. Unexplained thirst can mean medical problems.

Hospitals generally see a few cases of water poisoning a year. It's generally when a kid is forced by a parent to drink a large amount of water (uaually a gallon or more) at one sitting. However, it's easy to treat, the hospitals give them salt.

Sorry to contradict...

Water "poisoning "is possible. It's mostly seen among people worried about passing a bloodtest...for drugs

What it amounts to is that you may dilute the salts, potassium , calcium , etc.

no electrolytes, cetain functions fail...

Are you drinking gallons?
Are you taking a multi-vitamin?

i don't think i'm drink gallons. i don't have a concept of how much that is though. i just keep refilling my water bottle. i take a multivitamin.

what are symptoms of water poisoning? i don't really think i'm drinking enough to worry about it.

Yes, there is something called 'water intoxication' and it can be deadly. It imbalances the necessary electrolytes in the body, usually death is by cardiac failure, mostly with sodium and potassium issues...

But we're talking LOTS of water, ingested over a rather short timeframe usually. Most of the cases I hear about are boot camp issues. Every couple years someone is forced to drink too much water in military training and has problems with it...there is a balance that must be maintained.

If you are refilling something like those plastic sports bottles with water...you can go through many (like more than 10!) of those in a day and be fine. The only time you'd have to worry is if you're not ingesting anything else substantial that will give you nutrients.

Like Ruby said, unexplained thirst can certainly be a worrisome thing, if that's the driving force. Although if your body is used to you ingesting goodly quantities of water, if you miss a day you'll know it! My body always tells me when I haven't had my regular intake. :) Water is good!!

...I think that's called drowning.

Everything Mae said is correct. However, I would also look at what your diet consists of? ?

I just can't spell tonite

I read that you should not drink more than 12 glasses of water daily because it gives your body a false sense of fullness. Also, while lack of water can dehydrate you, too much water can overly hydrate you.

As Rubyfruit pointed out, if you're drinking too much water due to constant thirst, it could be a medical warning (i.e., diabetes).
