Too much porn gives you pop-ups

Is it just me, or has Lit been infected.

I keep getting re-directions to porn sites when I click links. I've pmed Laurel but am wondering if it's something I've picked up elsewhere.

I get a few pop-ups at once saying things like my Windows system is being analysed, and they just disappear.

Well, I'm not using Windows any more so I dunno.

Should I be worried my system is being analysed?

Unfortunately you've picked up something from outside, it happened to me a while ago. It seemed that everytime I came here I'd get a popup, but I'd been invested with spyware. I'm guessing that this particular spyware knows when you're visting such sites and activates accordingly.

I used adaware and spybot to clean it up. Hope that helps.

Gauche, I don't think it's this site, at least I haven't been getting any. As Lime said, get Ad-aware, sounds like you've picked up some ebil diallers from somewhere.

I made mention of a similar problem months ago. Norton and Adaware proggies had left me pop-up free for years, then one day out of the blue I started getting the same two ads that would appear simultaniously the moment I entered Lit (and only Lit.)

After I updated to XP, the double-pop-up dilemma self-corrected, but now I get at least one no matter what site I go to. It also seems to be more random, with ads appearing every 5-10 mins, as opposed to only when I first enter a page. Sometimes, SP will try to zap 'em, but that mostly just locks them up.

I can't see it just being a simple virus, because my computer has been professionally scanned, reformatted/updated twice, and even completly rebuilt since the initial occurances.

Adaware is from lavasoft, btw.

I also reccomend getting Spybot Search & destroy. Spybot finds some spyware Adaware misses & vice versa, but spybot also has a neat innoculation feature that blockes a lot of it. If you are running XP spybot & service pack two will cut down on the spyware on your machine dramatically.

Spybot is free too.

Best of luck.

Hi Gauche,

As above, it's almost certainly your machine, not Lit.

In addition to the external pop-up blockers, check whether your browser has it built in. If you use a browser from an independent source (I recommend either Opera - http://www.opera.com/ - or Mozilla - http://www.mozilla.org/ - both can be free of charge, especially the latter) the chances are that you can simply turn them all off inside the web browser.

Unfortunately, however genuine Bill Gates' wish to benefit the poulation at large may be, Micro$oft has an even more powerful desire to increase its dominance of the market. IE does more than other browsers - it goes past the limits of safety; and so does Outlook. Advert blockers and most of the anti-virus sector both rest on the consequences of that. An independent Web browser and an independent email program are as essential to safe computing as condoms are to safe sex with strangers.

IMHO

You might want to download SP2 from Microsoft. It's got an add blocker built in as well as many new security features.

A good site for this type of thing is cybertechhelp.com They have a message board and all the programs you need to combat this, including a free virus scan. But you'll also need a firewall and don't forget to regularly update windows by clicking Tools on the browser, then Windows Update. Download and install all the critical security updates.

Yeah - M$ does block its holes eventually, if only after the independents demonstrate that it's not only desirable, but also perfectly possible...

The cycle seems to be:

1. M$ - "Hey let's...."
2. Users - "Christ, now it's ..."
3. Independents - "Doesn't need to be."
4. M$ - "Shit... we got it wrong again! Suppose we'd better fix the fucker."

Repeat ad nauseam...

Eff

PS It's actually much more complicated than that, but that's still a pretty accurate simplification of reality - ask what proportion of Apple and Linux boxes get mal-ware problems in comparison to M$ systems... Using independent web browsers and email software is MUCH safer!

I should have told you. I meant to say something before things went too far, but it's not an easy thing to talk about.

It's not a matter of 'too much'

All it takes is one time, with the wrong one.

DON'T DO THIS!!!!

Microsoft have a tendency to release Service Packs and then actually make them work when people complain. It's newly released and downloading it now will make you part of their test group. I have seen SP2 literally kill computers, so that they need a complete format.

It might work perfectly, but then again, it might have a hissy fit with your firewall and make your computer explode. Leave it a couple of months until Microsoft have fixed more of the bugs, then download it.

I'm so happy to read this after I installed it LAST NIGHT! :( Typical.

Oh well, I wanted a new computer anyway. :D

Sorry folks, it was mostly a false alarm, my firewall informed me that it had detected a virus and that I should run AVG (which was free and seems to catch everything so far leaving spybot and windows trailing in it's dust, both of which I use). I simply neglected to run it when it warned me.

I hadn't turned off the computer since the warning, but now that I have there doesn't seem to be any sign of the little bleeder. Job done.

Thanks all.

By the way The, sp11 works ok for me.

Sp2 does work with a lot of computers. However, with a lot it'll make it explode. I don't want to take the chance till MS have fixed all the faults.
