I was raised in an Atheist household, very militant at that. They were also very ardent Liberals/Democrats. Nothing the Liberals/Democrats could do was wrong, and so I believed as well, being raised a good boy to do what my mother {single parent} told me and taught me to do. Its amazing how many single parents like the Liberals/Democrats in both countries, could it be cause they are favored with those parties over full families, who really knows the arguements for both could be pilled high.
Anyways child hood was cut short and a jump into "adult" life came early. I watched what went on around us in the community and province after a while I became interested nationwide. any ways, as I was watching mom when she got layed of she went to Welfare as an aid till she got a job, her previous job didn't have a unemlpoyement deduction at the time, early 80's and all. Well as watched her I noticed that she was looking for employment but all she could find was minimum wage jobs and guess what? Staying at a home doing nothing she brought in double almost triple on welfare than she could of out working one of those minimum wage jobs. Amazing how things never change. Watching the news, guess what party was pushing increase in welfare benfits, same party as down in the states, the Liberals/Democrats. The welfare system promotes a lazy attitude. It does not motivate a person to get off and do for themselves.
This was phase one of my eye opening, sure I was wearing new clothes for the first time in my life and I actually had the "in" clothes when they were in, But I could tell mom was not happy sitting at home, and seeing her not happy made me not happy.
It is still my contention that it is not the welfare system that needs money and finacning added to it, cause its already a lazy man's way to luxury. It is the wage system that needs revamping. Sure 5.75$ New Brunsiwck Minimum wage is fine for a student or someone living at home or going to college, but for a grown adult, with a rent/mortgage, phone, electirc, food, medical etc. it is not satisfactory.
Phase two began in the mid 80's when the Liberal/Democrat Party had a premier elected into New Brunswick. A great time of economic and social growth for all, yeah right. For two years the premiers families all happened to have thier roads to the near highways repaved with the best pavement int he province, and just so the regular joe wouldn't suspect anything they placed signs, "Pavement evalutation program" just happened these "pavement evaulation programs" began exactly at end of the the premiers families driveways and ended at the nearest highway entry. Meanwhile towns and villages couldn't even get budgeted enough money for coldtar{the cheapest} to repair winter borne potholes.
Phase three began when schools in Progessive Conservative/Republican basesd voting communites began to be shut down. Now small schools I can understand you know the ones that were built for a communities of 300 students but now only held 50-60 students but not the ones that were actually bursting at the seems. The Liberal based voting communites got benefits and tax based while the Progressive Conservative/Republican based communities got none of the same.
That was about the end for me of being a Liberal/Democrat supporter at the time the result was to jump on the Progressive Conservative/Republican andwagon. Well that didn't last to long maybe a year or so and I saw all the same failings within that party that I did the other.
What should come along but an alternative to the big 2, the Reform/Libertarian Party futurely to become the Canadian Alliance/Libertarian. They were a cross breed of the Liberal/Democrat and the Progressive Conservative/Republicans only they seemd to care for the actual peoples rights not the governemtns right to step in and do what the governemtn feels is right for the people.
Now the Reform/Libertarian Party has gone through a lot of growing pains to become the Canadian Alliacne and They made a mistake last fall by voting Stockwell Day as leader but that should be over by next spring come the annual revote. Adn teh Party has a lot more growing pains to go through before it steps toe to toe with the Big 2.
On a final note what sems extreem right is only to those in the extreme left and what seems extreme left is only to those in the extreme right. We need to come to a more central view again bothe Progressive Conservative/Repubilcans and Liberal/Democrats and the Candian Alliance/Libertarian might be an aid to that end.
