Todd; I was having a look through some old reading material and found an article which might be of interest to you (given your thread about "opinions").
The article begins: "I write this in Canada and Canada is a good country in which to study the terms of democracy."
Want to know more? The article is by John Grierson, I'm not too sure of the book title [!], but there's a chance it's "Grierson On Documentary". I've scribbled on the photocopied pages I have "F. Hardy, ed." and "London: Collins, 1946". Sorry about the obscure references, but all the bits and pieces I keep aren't very well organised. The chapter in question is called "Searchlight on Democracy", if that helps.
I don't know if you've came across this, and can't remember details about the author. Regardless of their political persuasion or origins, I think you may enjoy reading from an alternative source, assuming you haven't encountered this already.
