"Alaska State Troopers used a helicopter to rescue two hikers from Hatcher Pass after they were reported overdue Sunday shortly before midnight.
Two hikers left Saturday to spend a night at a cabin approximately nine miles from the Gold Mint trailhead.
Due to weather conditions and the fact that the pass had received four feet of snow the day of the report, attempts to locate the hikers was not possible Sunday.
But on Monday around 11 a.m., troopers responded to the area with HELO 2 to conduct an aerial search of the trail.
The hikers were found three miles from the trailhead in 5 to 6 feet of fresh snow. The helicopter landed approximately one quarter of a mile from the hikers, and troopers hiked to their location and loaded them into the helicopter.
They were transported to Mat-Su Regional Medical Center for medical treatment and are in stable condition with family and friends."

NWS: Another Series of Major Storms to Impact Alaska Through the Week
Another series of major winter storms will be impacting the State of Alaska through the week bringing high storm surge to already affected areas along the west coast of the State, freezing rain accumulation up to 3/4 inch for the western Interior of Alaska, and snowfall of up to a foot for much of the Alaska Interior.

Not as bad as the Philippines. And, nothing that hasn't happened before.
Northern Lights
It may seem strange to most of the people on this site but - I remember that during
the WW 2 - ( probably during the winter of '42 or '43) - the Lights were visible as far
South as New York city where I lived as a child. There were explanations in the
newspapers and in the daily newscasts on the radio. I'm sorry that it was so long ago
that I have forgotten what were the explanations. I do remember standing in the
street with friends and neighbors - all of us exclaiming as the sheets of green and
blue swept through the sky.
