Strange shit happening in Denali Park:

"DENALI PARK, Alaska - A pet turtle found abandoned on the Denali Park Road this week escaped two fates — freezing to death and being added to someone’s dinner menu.

Other pets weren’t so lucky.

Park employees driving out the park road mid-week to check on the massive landslide at 37 Mile, inside Denali National Park, noticed garbage strewn about on the asphalt parking pullout at 5 Mile.

Someone had built a fire, using one of those firewood bundles available at convenience stores.

“We started seeing animal entrails scattered about the scene,” said Denny Capps, park geologist (who is no relation to me).

They also noticed several Petco boxes. Petco is a national retail pet supply store, with locations in Fairbanks and Anchorage.

“That made it doubly interesting,” he said.

Then Capps and crew noticed the fire had been used to cook small animals.

“It probably was some kind of rodent, I’m guessing a guinea pig or ferret, something like that,” Capps said. “It had apparently been roasted on the fire. It was completely black and charred on the outside.”

The rodent appeared to have been eaten. There were bite marks and cooked flesh had been pulled from the carcass, he said.

A small white mouse — non-native to the area — lay dead and frozen nearby. A snake head also lay on the ground.

“I don’t know my snakes well, but it was probably a python or boa constrictor,” Capps said. “It was a small to medium-size exotic snake.”

There seemed to be an animal for each Petco box. Bloodied rubber gloves lay scattered around the area.

Inside a big generic cardboard box was an unopened Petco box. Someone nudged it with his foot and it felt heavy. There was something inside.

“We called in the rangers,” Capps said. They didn’t want to open it and figured whatever was in the box was dead.

Inside the box was a cold, but still alive, red-eared slider turtle. The turtle returned to headquarters with the ranger, warmed up and has since been adopted by the Milone family.

The turtle’s new name? Lucky.

Capps and his crew continued driving to the slide area, but it has been hard to shake that bizarre scene.

“This is a day I will not soon forget,” he said.

Theories abound, of course.

Were the animals part of a ritual? A dare among teens? An exotic feast?

Law enforcement rangers say “investigation continues.""
