The indigenous folk would hurl them at the cavalry soldiers. The spines stick and fester. A great tactic.

I've had my run-ins with 'em, too. I ended up falling on a dead (brittle and nasty) one in your fair state, once upon a time. I also rescued a lady mtb rider who landed chest first into one.
