short version: the NJ state supreme court has supported the legal right of gays to marry. the less short versions are here and here.

commentary: the instructions were for the state legislature to hash this out. given NJ's tradition of social progressiveness, i have every confidence this will be hashed out within the 180 day timeframe dictated by the state supreme court.

I'm really glad to hear this. I caught a blip on the news a bit earlier and they were reporting that it would be sometime after 3 p.m. before we (the public) would know the decision. I got distracted by other things and forgot to go back to CNN or some news station to see what the results were.

That news is welcome, ed. I only wish the good people of Ohio were as forward thinking.

hell, in my state (or at least in my area of it), it'd be an improvement just to be thinking... regardless of the direction it took.

I believe you live in what is considered a southern state? It has been my experience the further south you go, the bigger the stick up where the sun don't shine. Bible Belt, EJ. It's a powerful influence.

I apologize in advance to any forward-thinking southerners I may have offended.

The way it is being reported in the press is that the legislature has to decide where or not to call a gay 'association' a marriage. When this issue came up in Canada I felt it should not be called the same thing - but it was. And, guess what, didn't make any difference. The sun still came up.

So now that we are nicely settled with it the current govt. (which I find I generally support) wants to bring it all up again and 'decide' whether to call it 'marriage' or something else. I can't stand these bloody re-visits! We decided! It didn't go the way I thought it should but I can live with it. Let's give it a chance to play out and then see if there really is a problem. If not then leave it alone.

The best line I heard about this is: 'I support homosexual marriage. Why should they be gay when the rest of us have to put up with our spouse?'

Over the last couple of years there have been numerous occasions when I thought it would be wise to emigrate to Canada.

you're a better person than i... i'd never make this statement. :D

but, um, isn't this an oxymoron?

i'm anticipating cries of indignation from several of our other regulars here any minute now, EJ. :>

if you ever decide to act on this, let me know Yank :)

I think all marriages should be gay, but that's just my inner optimist speaking. IME, most are moderately sullen most of the time.

Euphemistically speaking. ;)

Perhaps one of the reasons I'm not married. ;)

just for the record, the way i understood the ruling was thus:

the court didn't rule to permit or sanction gay marriage... it merely required that gay couples be afforded every right hetero couples are afforded. it's a minor difference (again, if i recall correctly) but not the same as allowing gay marriage.

that's correct: they sent it back to the state legislature. but b/c jersey's gay friendly, i have every confidence that within the 180 day limit, and w/ a democrat governor, it'll happen.
