My favourite nail varnish has gone totally gloopy. Any idea how to thin it down? Mark's taking me out to dinner and I want to look extra special... just cause :)

There are special acetone thinners sold in chemists.

There are also thinners for Snopake etc that would work.

If not, lighter fuel might do.

Easiest solution is to throw the nail varnish away and buy new. All attempts to thin it will be compromises.

A drop of nail polish remover may work.

I'm trying that and it seems to have worked. He's still in the shower... He takes longer in there than I do!

Mum only ever let me have clear nail varnish when I was younger and that was to try and stop me biting my nails. So of course I coloured them in with black marker and then put the clear over the top - she went nuts looking for my black nail varnish for hours until I hold her, at which point she made me wash it off :)

 Actually, it was because I got busted drawing a great big target sign in lipstick on a certain part of my anatomy... and an arrow... drawn in black mascara and labelled "This way to heaven"

I agree. The main solvents used in Nail polish tend to be acetates, thus having a chemical structure of RCOCOR'. While acetone (the main component in nail polish remover) is a ketone (RCOR'), it has a carbonyl functional group, which is also a part of the acetate functional group. And as the old saying goes, like dissolves like.

These compounds are said to be miscible.

Go for it.

Sorry...but if you ask a chemist a question regarding chemistry, what do you expect?
Tell us about chocolate now.

Oddly enough, I had my first piece of chocolate in more than two years just last night.....highly addictive and I have an addictive personality, that's why I stay away from it... :p

Still, what do you want to know?

What chemically makes for good chocolate? is it the cacao? the additives?

There are hundreds of chemicals found in chocolate, depending on where it is grown (the bean), the chemistry of the soil, the stresses that the plant endures during the growth cycle, etc...

Of those compounds many have been identified and have similar structures to such compounds as opiates, cannabinoids, amphetamines and serotonins.

Why do you think chocolate makes you feel so good?

p.s. I my dissertation focused on natural products chemistry. Please don't get me started.
