If it wasn’t for him knowing, she wouldn’t even appear to be anything less than the Lady of the house. He handed the reins to Cassius and helped them both mount up.

“Aurelius, you're in charge while I’m gone. Would you for once use your chambers in the house. No sense in you staying in your old quarters all the time.”

“I’ll take care of things here sir. Enjoy your ride.”

Cassius always tried to get him to come to the house, but living in there felt off. He was much more comfortable in HIS quarters. But maybe he would make use of some the house while they were away. He walked to his quarters, reaching the door he slowly pushed it open.

She finally stood in the door way as she looked over to the table but she then saw she had never thought she would ever see. It was Aurelius kneeling a bit different, as she had been taught to kneel. “Yes, this is for you. I want to save you these lessons. I don’t know what your life will be like now. But if you save yourself these marks then you may find some solace in our shared existence.”

After they ate they went to bed he didn’t say a thing the hole time which made her sad for some reason she wanted to say something but for some reason she just couldn’t. There was something about his scares that made her want to behave and listen and learn what he had to show her.

She slept that night very deeply as she dreamed about Aurelius, would he have been this soft to her so to say, if he hadn’t had the scares or would she be wearing the scares now.

Liviana heard knocking but before she noticed no one was there to open and she didn’t want to wake Aurelius she thought it wouldn’t hurt if she opened the door thou he did tell her not to pen the door. She decided to do it even thou she knew she wasnt supposed to but as she got to the door no one was there.

She stood now in the open door no one seeing her she could so easily run she even took one step out but she couldn’t move and take another one something about what happened last nights dinner made her step backwards back inside closing the door before her. She leaned against the door some her back still turned to the room as if she was going to open the door any second again as she just leaned against the door with her head and stayed standing there for a few moments.

She couldn’t believe it he was opening up to her as if she had never been a slave at all she kissed him and listened the whole night to his plans.

After they got back she walked, strong and full of pride knowing now she wasn’t going to be a slave much longer before she left to her room to gather some things to move them to his room. She just knew that she wanted to stay there and would be able to never wanting to leave his side even if he hadn’t told her that before.

Rolling out of the covers, the air already hot and sticky so early in the day. His first action of his waking mind was to reach for the girl, he thought he remembered her coming to bed with him. However he always drank a bit to much wine when he remembered his past. He was strong in many ways but revealing his scars always left him feeling vulnerable. When he didn’t find her in the room, he stood up his head rolling a bit with the lingering buzz of the wine. Walking into the main room, he found her, head pressed to the door. She looked conflicted. He hesitated to interrupt her, unsure of what exactly had happened. He thought maybe she had thought of escaping, but she was still here, and everyone thought of escape at the first. He thought of the brand on his back. He hadn't told her how he had gotten it, but the night running through the southern woodlands and his eventual capture as he boarded a ship to freedom in Greece. He looked at her with knowing eyes as he spoke, maybe it was the previous night, or maybe he was just tired. But he didn’t want to start this day off with punishment.

“Was someone at the door? Thank you for not opening it, I’ll get it.”

Cassius walked into his home, the lavish main hall spread out in front of him. A servant walked through the rooms, she approached him. He smiles he didn’t know this one’s name but her breast swelled into perk nubs under her robes. She was smaller than many, her waist looked so fragile cinched by the belt she wore. She bowed and offered him a drink. He took it in his hand and had a wonderful idea. He leaned down to her and whispered to her.

“There is a new lady in the house, Meloria is now a free woman. She will need someone to tend to her. You are new yes? Go to her, present yourself to her. Tend to her needs, and tell her I will be in the Garden.”

Liviana was thinking about how stupid she was for not running but also about Aurelius why couldn’t she just be his. She had always found Cassius different then most men but the things Aurelius is to teach her made her fear him slightly not sure, if she would live long at his side.

She heard Aurelius then suddenly she jumped at his question she turned to face him. She looked at him for some reason she wanted to drop to her knees as if showing him respect so something but didn’t and thought if she told him she opened the door he had to punish her again but what if he saw her open the door and waited to say something to see if she tells the truth. She wasn’t sure what to do.

“Yes Aurelius there was someone there but I do believe he or she is already gone again I didn’t want to wake you”

She thought she could say it so it wasn’t a lie and she didn’t say she didn’t open the door, she lowered her head some as she then walked to the table to set it for breakfast.

Meloria loved the way her gown he had already given her felt on her skin so silky and smooth other then the things she had to wear when she wore something.

She was putting her things away nicely the little she had as someone knocked at the door she wondered who it was, she knew it would be hard at first to not do the things she did as a slave.

“Come in its open!”

She said as a new girl slave very fragile walked in and smiled to her offering a cup of wine, Meloria smiled and walked around looking at her as the girl then said to her.

“Master sent me to you to serve your needs and all and to also tell you Ma’am that he is in the garden”

This made her smile a present for her, her finger tips traveled over her body thinking this is a very cute present. She would so very enjoy it.

“Thank you for telling me… Now I would like for you to rub me in with a little oil before I go to Cassius so my skin may look its best for him and then you will go back to your duties and come back later tonight to me I wish to take a closer look at you then”

The girl nodded setting the plate with the wine and all to side getting the oil to do so. After the girl did, what she was supposed to do Meloria made her way to the garden. Everything felt so new bright and beautiful now then before.

“I’ll check, let's see what our early morning guest wanted”

He stepped past her as she headed toward the table, finding a note had been left near the door, picking it off the ground turning it over he read his Masters words. He sighed, a trip to Rome was not his favorite thing. It would take a long time and he would have to announce his own position in many situations, unless…. He ran out the door, not even shutting it, yelling behind him to the girl.

“STAY IN THE HOUSE, BE READY TO TRAVEL WHEN I RETURN”

He ran to the stables, grabbing a horse, jumping it without saddling it he took off out of the Villa, heading toward his hidden stache. The coin pouch was heavy in his hand, it had more than enough than his own price. He turned and charged the horse down the hill, back to Cassius and hopefully, his own life. His heart was racing as he came back into the Villa, even though the morning was warm and the sun was already reaching its zenith, he felt cold. The sweat running down him chilling his bones as the breeze crossed over his skin. The coin jangled as he walked into the main house, a servant approached him, giving directions to the garden when asked where the Master was. He walked, holding his head up high, showing confidence he didn’t really have at the moment. Cassius sat near the fountain, the flowers from around the empire bloomed around him. He could easily be royalty if seen in this light. Aurelius lifted the coin and offered to his master.


Cassius relaxed in the sun, the noonday sun warm and soothing. He was waiting for Meloria when Aurelius walked up, holding a dirty bag in his hands. He reached up, curious to see what his friend because he truly felt this man be one, was so worked up about. When the coin dropped into his hand, the bag opening and a single silver coin clattering to the floor, landing with the emperors face up.

“What is this for?”

“Myself, I want to purchase my freedom.”




Cassius was dumbstruck, he often forgot that Aurelius was even a slave, he gave him so much freedom, but at that moment he became aware of how he had never given him the one freedom that mattered, his.

“Aurelius, I can’t accept this.”

Aurelius recoiled at this, his mind raced as panic set in. His legs felt week and he collapsed the singular coin inches from his forehead.

Cassius knelt picking the singular coin up and pressing into his friend's palm. Closing his fingers around it.

“I’m sorry I ever made you feel that you had to purchase your freedom from me, ever since that first night I’ve never thought of you as a slave. Have your freedom, I’ll send you a letter for yourself. One condition, come live with me here on the Villa, help me make my dream a reality and I’ll make sure you are as wealthy as you want to be.”




Aurelius felt the tears run down his face, the sobbing overtaking him as he cried onto the marble floor he knelt on, Cassius hands on his shoulders lifting him up till his Master, former master, embraced him letting him pour his heart out into the man’s chest.

“Aurelius, you really do put too much on yourself. Be free, be my friend, and work for me here. Go, take your time in Rome, enjoy the travel.”

Lifting up the bag of coin, Cassius handed it back to his friend.

“Take your earnings, and while you're at it take Liviana with you. I suspect you are enjoying the fruits of her training anyway. I still would like you to teach her the ways of the servants. But, things have changed, the plan is different now. I freed Meloria as well…we are.. well I love her Aurelius. “


Aurelius stood, a little stricken at the news. Meloria was freed too? How, why, had he misjudged Cassius this entire time. He had seen him whip slaves to shreds, but he had never seen him dish out a punishment that wasn’t fitting. But he still thought of him as his Master, while it seems Cassius thought of him as a friend….how could he have been so blinded by status.

“Thank You”

He stood with the coin clenched in his hands, he couldn’t raise his eyes to Cassius, he could only squeeze out those words as he turned and headed out of the Garden. Following the marble path into the main house and passing Meloria as she stared at him with a confused look.

Soon he was back at the door to his quarters, his tears had dried and he had tried to rub the lines where they had ran out of his face. He pushed the door open, walking into the room.

Liviana looked only once to watch him walk to the door, as she went to set the table for breakfast. She gasped thou as she hears him run off and yell back to her to stay in the house and get ready to travel.

She ran to the door watching him take off he was so determined some how and wondered what he had found and why he had to take off in such a hurry. She looked around as she saw no one she could have run away once again but once again, her feet didn’t take her more then one step out in the fresh air.

She sighed some as she watched him ride of towards the villa she then went back in closing the door behind her. She went to the table putting the things back in the cabinet and wondered if she should also pack something to eat. She also hoped if she was going with him to where ever he was going she might be able to wear something more then the ropes.

She packed a bit of bread and such in a bag she found laying it on the table and looked around if anything needed to be cleaned or such as she didn’t know what she should do as she waited for him to come back. After she did what she could she remembered what he had told her about if she wanted to go out in the fresh air there was an opening on the roof she was allowed to use. She then there and she felt weird but it felt nice to sit in Nadu under the up coming sun the cool air kissing at her naked skin and the slowly rising sun warming it at the same time.

Meloria was humming slightly as she was so happy, she had never been as happy as she made her way out to the garden. She gasped some as Aurelius came crying past her she stopped to watch him wondering what had happened to make him cry.

She knew Aurelius very good, as he was the one that taught her the servant ways for Cassius wishes in when he had bought her back then. After he was gone, she stepped faster afraid something else might be wrong thou as she came around the corner seeing Cassius alive and well she sighed in relief.

She walked up to him and kissed him passionately wrapping her arms around him as she then broke the kiss her eyes showed a bit of a worry as she asked softly.

“Cassius is everything alright…. Why was Aurelius crying?”

She got worried that something might have happened which would stop him from truly freeing her or something worse which would make him angry and she just hoped it wasn’t anything really not wanting him to be upset on such a lovely day.
