If you're going to do the straight-down approach, the easiest way to open your throat is to yawn without drawing air. The contraction of your throat muscles opens it all up. For some reason, this also tends to make my eyes water, though.

Ruby's right, though, over the edge of the bed is easiest. Any angle where the woman can get her head tilted back will make it *much* easier to take the whole thing.

If you can hold your breath for a longish while without panicking (the worst possible reaction), one can take *much* more than you might think, like all the way to the wrinkles.

The main thing is to relax. I've never had a problem with it and never planned or thought about doing it beforehand, it just happened naturally for me even when I was a teenager before I really "knew" what I was doing, so I've never been tense while doing it.
