I'd like to offer condolences to you on your loss. I'm only an American but I understand how you must be feeling during this time of loss.

Thanks Never

I would not say that I am a true Royalist, I do think that many of the family do a great job for us but there are some Royal family members who are just hangers on.

However, in the Queen Mother we have lost a truly wonderful lady and the family members who I referred to above should take a look at themselves and start to follow her example.

She will be missed by us all.

We lost a great one. A true hero of the realm has fallen.

I loved watching her toss back a good stiff gin every now and then.

God Bless her.

I'm part Irish...

And my ancestors had a saying....

"May the road rise up to meet your feet, May the sun always shine on your face, May the wind always be at your back, and May God hold you in the palm of His hand"

Long live the Queen

When my grandmother died we had a slightly different blessing on her prayer card it was:

May the road rise
to meet your feet,

May the wind be always
at your back,

May the sun shine warm
upon your face,

And rains fall soft
upon your fields,

And until we meet again,
may God keep you
in the hollow of His hand.

She may have been trad and conservative, but she was authentic, and that's the over-riding virtue of anyone in my book.

Other authentics I admire, Enoch Powell and Norman St. John Stevas. I don't agree with their views, but good people in my books.

Thanks Never...

The things she achieved in her life are now only slowly coming out as people are talking about them.

One story is that she and the King were sent to America in 1939 by the British Government to try to pursuade Roosevelt to actively come out against Hitler.

He couldn't do it for political reasons but the story goes that it was the Queen Mother's charm which managed to pursuade the President and the American Government to start sending Britain supplies we knew we would need as time went by.

A story? Maybe. But a nice one.

I have this image of her wowing them in the White House whilst doing the Charleston or whatever!

She had a long and busy life.

:D

The Queen Mum will be missed by a lot of people all around the world , not just the British .....

I for one , feel very upset by her death , even thou I never knew her personally , it is a bit like when we lost Diana ....

I am also no royalist, though not a revolutionary either. The queen mum had, in recent years, the image of a sweet old lady who still had a sense of fun.

Let us not forget, however, that she was as tough as old boots, and not exactly sympathetic concerning affairs of the heart.

She married into the royal family and embraced an extravagent lifestyle with unusual vigour.

After King Edward VIII gave up the throne to marry the American woman he loved, Wallace Simpson, Elizabeth's shy, stammering husband became King George VI, changing forever the line of succession.

In what I still consider to be a most ungrateful and ungracious move, she announced to the whole royal and aristocratic world that anyone who attended Edward and Mrs. Simpson's wedding would be forever excluded: neither she nor the King would ever speak to them, see them or accept their letters again.

Much later, hers was the strongest and most insistant voice in the family to insist that Charles give up the love of his life, Camilla (now Parker-Bowles), and find himself a young virgin to produce an heir to the throne. This was cruel to both him AND Diana, who always knew where her husband's heart really was.

Yes, her strength ran the monarchy for a while. She was the first royal spin doctor and King George never made a decision without her say-so. Many would say: so what if she did what she had to do to keep things together, it worked and she was well-loved by millions.

She was, and so does not need the addition of mine. I sympathise with the family as for any family that loses a loved one, but she had a longer innings than most of us, and lived an outrageously luxurious life.

My heart goes out to you for the lost of her, the Queen's MUM.....She was such a special person, just like Princess Diane, who is always on my mind........So I send my love to all of you at your lost, of a most wonderful woman.  :rose:

Ditto. Thanks, Never! Nice that there's yet another Lit.eratus that cares in the US. And you are not JUST an American.. :D

Peepee, I've heard that story as well. It makes sense enough to be true. :)

I kinda liked the old bat myself.

Can anyone answer me this though.

Why do the royals take three weeks to be buried it seems?

Since we now know that Edward made a secret pact with Hitler that once the Nazis had control over all of Europe, the Duke of Windsor would become King of England again, I say good on the Queen Mother for this.

RIP, Ma'am.
