This is either the third or fourth year that I've done this on the AH, and every year y'all bring me to tears with your generosity.

For those that have helped in the past: Thank you so much.

For the newbies this time around, please help. Even the smallest things can make a huge difference to someone.

(please help me keep this thread on the front page so it's seen by as many people as possible - thanks! And, please....keep the threadjacking to a minimum ;) )

**********

There's a Lakota reservation in the Dakotas called Pine Ridge. The people that live there are desperately poor - in fact, it's the poorest county in the United States. Many of the people there have no running water, no electricity, and one of the leading causes of death for their elderly is freezing to death. It's absolutely appalling that people have to live this way in this day and age.

If you could help at all, it is so appreciated. Every little bit helps. I crochet afghans while I watch television, and I've been sending blankets up that way for the past three years (all year long), along with clothing, books, etc. It's not much, only a drop in the bucket actually, but I feel compelled to help in whatever way I can.

There's a group of people that have organized the efforts to help at Friends of Pine Ridge. On the front page of their website there is usually a list of things that are desperately needed, and if you go to the Organizations link, there is a list of the many orgs working there on the reservation, and a list of what each one needs, or in the case of the libraries a "wishlist" of books.

You can send your donations of toys, gifts, clothing, books, blankets, even cash directly to the organization you choose, whether that's the Women's and Children's Shelter, Oglala Sioux Tribe Victims Assistance in Indian Country (VAIC), Wakanyeja Pawicayapi, Inc. (The Children First) - an organization devoted to providing mental health care for Lakota youth ages 0-22, or countless other organizations right there on the reservation that help to alleviate some of the hardships that the people of Pine Ridge face every single day.

Here's what life is like for the Lakota of Pine Ridge:

The Pine Ridge Reservation is considered the poorest in the country. Located south of the Badlands, with its depleted soil, scarce natural resources and harsh climate, 35,000 Americans are forced to live.

This is a vast, nearly treeless land far from industry, cities and resources. Jobs are scarce and often far away. Transportation is a problem.

* The average yearly income is $3,600

* The unemployment rate is 85%.

* Diabetes affects 33% of the population, including children and elderly.

* The average life expectancy is second lowest in the world: 48 for males and 56 for females.

* Freezing is a leading cause of death.

Native Americans have enriched our nation throughout history. The first settlers would not have survived without their help. As a group they have more U.S. military veterans per capita than any other ethnic group in our country.

They are survivors of a profound holocaust that occurred right here in the land of freedom.

In the midst of all this desperation, there is hope. That's where we come in. :)

Please help if you can. Y'all have always come through for me in the past, and I know you'll come through again. Let's continue to make a difference for some folks that need a hand.

a timely reminder... I want to cut down on some of my possessions, since I'm moving. As long as they don't mind looking like Padre fans, I've got a couple stacks of never-been-worn t-shirts from giveaways at ballgames.

I was gonna give 'em to Goodwill here, but I think it's worthwhile to spend the money on postage. I'll look at what else I might be able to send as I pack.

Thanks for the reminder. I sent something last year, and I'll try to find the money to do so this year as well.

Thanks, Bel.

I've started going through all of Spidey's clothes that he's outgrown, but that are still in good shape - they're all headed up there. I'm also begging from all my friends that have kids - I'll just include it with mine, and pay the postage myself. It's worth it.

I've also got blankets ready to go, and I'm planning on buying some christmas gifts to include.

This is my christmas every year. I would much rather see gifts/clothing/books go to someone who needs them desperately, than to ask for anything for myself - I don't need anything, you know?

Thanks, Jen.

Every little bit helps. Y'all's generosity is amazing.

Thanks for alerting us to this need. I have girl's clothes to sort, and will certainly send what I can.

I just found a huge garbage bag of old clothes that have been standing around in our basement since we moved in. The fact that I forgot all about them tells me most of them likely won't be missed. All I have to do is throw them in the washer and find a fitting box.

Since retiring, I have put on a lot of weight. some of the clothing I have will never fit me again, and even some of my shoes are just gathering dust. I will be assembling things like this in a large box and shipping them off.

Besides writing a check.

I've been going through closets and sorting through things. I'll have several boxes to send.

If I were closer I'd send stuff, but as it is I just sent a paypal donation for them to use as they need. :)

There are about seventy-nine of my fellow employees at the restaurant. I'm going to make a flyer, including all the information you posted above. I guarantee you'll see something from us.

:rose:

I'll try my best but I can not guarentee anything, I'll go through clothes and see what hubby and I have that we don't need and see if we can afford to send. I wish I could guarentee something but right now I've already bitten off a lot and might need a reminder and shove in the right direction to get everything done...

I cut my wardrobe down a lot when I moved, I'll look into shipping the stuff I'm not gonna wear again.

Serious question: Should I send a size conversion chart? They're all English sizes (varying from 14 - WHEN was I that small? - to about 18)

Hey Cloudy!

Awesome... I am in the middle of moving, and was going to take most of my things to the local drop box... but... Having several friends living in Pine Ridge and Rosebud... I will send it all there now... this includes more than a dozen winter coats for kids and adults...(they were all donated to me when I was in desperate straights after Katrina and abrupt relocation with only what I could carry)...
Thank you for reminding me of my extended families needs, while I experience unprecedented abundance in my life.

Happy Thanks Giving!

I posted a flyer at work, pretty much a printout of your first post, Cloudy. I'll give everyone about a week or so, then colelct it all and send it to the school. ;)

Bless you, sweetie.
